I ended up getting smb to work by disabling Appletalk on the Windows 2003 server. I had it running because of some legacy macs that were being used. Now all seems OK. Am getting a login prompt and can login. SMB appears to be a lot faster than AFP on my setup.

HELP: ipconfig_get_option failed, (os/kern) failure

Who can help?

When I boot up my G3 333Mhz iMac in verbose mode, running OS X 10.1.2, after the command line completes:

SystemStarter: Initializing network

The command line then reads:

Initializing network
Configuring network
ipconfig_get_option failed, (os/kern) failure

Can someone please tell me what this means??

Regards
Dean

I'd post a new thread asking for help if I were you. You will get more help that way. This thread isn't the place for your problems :)

After following this I still have no luck. Been trying for 6 months to get this to work and it just won't.

When connecting via SMB it just keeps asking for my password for the PC and keeps telling me it's wrong though i KNOW i'm typing it correctly. I've even tried both uppercase and lowercase. No go. On the PC end, when I try to type in the //123.456.7.8/username it just says "The network path was not found."

When trying to connect via Finder > Network > MSHOME > COMPUTER it says "he alias
"COMPUTERNAME" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be
found."

I'm running OSX 10.3.8 and WinXP SP2.

dido on his thing. try the firewall. also, have you tried doing it from your PC to MAC? I finally figured out how to do it both ways just by trial and error and spending some quality time with both and making sure everything is doing what it is suppose to in order for it to work.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem:

To connect my XP SP2 and Mac Mini I have to use the
smb://192.168.x.x method. My PC will not show up in any other way. I have tired everything in this thread (shutting off firewalls, making sure sharing is enabled etc).

Well it works to connect but when I start to transfer files from the pc to mac it freezes. I am am able to bring small amounts of data across (under 5 meg) at a time with no problem but when I try to bring anything over 10 meg. It Freezes. Always. Finder freezes and I usually I have to restart the computer.

Anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?

edesignuk,

Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I bought a mac, without ever touching one before. (I like to think I am divorcing microsoft, heh.) My biggest fear was transferring my data from the pc to the mac. I followed your directions line by line, and was ecstatic to be transferring all my documents and music over. I am sure I will be able to do it again when it comes time for my husbands upcoming powerbook purchase replaces his PC, as well.

I just wanted you to know how easy you made it for me to save the stuff held hostage on my PC the same day I got my mac.

cheers for the tutorial! got my PB linked up to the downstairs network now. just 1 problem; i cant connect to the internet! its nothing major. ill probably fix it myself later on

next step; wireless network at the weekend. should be fun to set this up ;)

internett

Thanks for posting this thread

my mac and my pc is now connected, but I was hoping I could go on the internet trough with my pc trough my mac. Currently internet is not working on the pc.

Can this be done?
How?

Thanks

And then there is airport... what am I doing wrong?

Dear all...

What is it I am doing wrong? reading through the guide above makes it all look terribly easy, and therefor I feel extra stupid not being able to ge this working.... this is the setup:

1 Powerbook G4, OSX 10.3.8
connects through airport network..

airport connects (ethernet) to Thomson Speedtouch adsl router...-->internet

1 WinXP prof sp2
connects through LAN to the same adsl router for internet...

My logic tells met these computers are physicly networked...Both being connected to the same router should give me networking, or not?

How do I get these babies talk?!

I followed the procedure above, but there is no communication whatsoever

If I try to connect MAC->WIN...:The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb//10.2.2.0/workgroup" could not be written (errorcode -36)

I am confused....help would be very much appreciated

thnx, Obbe

Can you ping one machine from another?

For Mac open the Terminal (Applications > Utilities) and type ping 192.168.1.2 (but with the IP address of your PC)

For PC open Command Prompt (Start > Run> "cmd {return}") and type the same, but with your Macs IP address.

Hold on, you shouldn't be trying to connect to smb://ipaddress/workgroup. You should be connecting to smb://ipaddress/shareName.

ping results

Thanx for this quick reply..

well I tried to ping, but pinging gives negative results...all data is being lost

Also the smb://ipaddress/pcshare... does not reply...(sorry about that)
pinging to default gateway address (don't really understand) works fine

Could the firewall that is built in the modem/router have something to do with it?

Obbe

NEVER MIND, SOMEHOW IT WORKS NOW.....CHEERS!

Edesignuk, thanks for the Windows 2003 Authentication trick. Tip #2 finally allowed me to access our corporate fileserver. But I still have no luck with Exchange. Is there a similar trick? Entourage is complaining about a missing certificate.

passwords

thanks for all the help!

However I still have one problem.

I accessing the internett with a pc through my mac, but the pc can't seem to enter any password for some reason. I can't log into any mail accounts etc. do you know how to fix that?

Thanks alot

still no luck

I have tried everything listed here to get the 2 machines to talk, but my mac wont see windows, windows will see the mac.

networking Mac->Windows help

I'd like a little advice. My Windows box sees my Mac just fine, and connects to it without issue. However, I am unable to connect to Windows from my Mac. My Windows machine doesn't show up in Network, but if I choose "Connect to Server" and type "smb://" (without the "quotes") followed by the short name of my Windows PC, I get a login prompt. When I try to log in, I can't because "the user name or password was incorrect". My Windows account has no password, and the short name isn't at all similar to the long name. Am I using the wrong name (I tried the short name, which didn't work)?

As I said in the guide (;)), your windows account MUST have a password, or how is it supposed to authenticate - it can't.

How can I set up an Ethernet connection between my mom's PC and my eMac so I can play games with my friends?

Read the very first post in this thread, it is a guide to connecting a Windows Machine to a Mac.
