first and fore most remember you have to be in the same work group, yes apple has a program that allows you to switch work groups. search google for how to change the mac workgroup to match your windows workgroup. turn off all firewalls. I have tried lots of them and I couldn't connect with not a one to my mac. don't create a share on your pc in "my documents" create on the c: drive itself. then share that folder completely and let users able to change it.

go to networks under my computer on apple give it a few minutes to update or restart both machines. both should work if u have switch. now if it a password window pops up with a password put your windows one in. and it will mount to your desktop

I experimented quite a bit with different variables after getting it to work. As long as you know the path name to your mac, as stated at the bottom of the sharing preferences window when 'windows sharing' is highlighted, you can connect to your mac from your pc from the "Run..." function on your pc. Even if you do not specify the same workgroup on your mac, as long as you connect to the mac at least once using the "Run..." function on your pc, your mac will then always appear in your network neighborhood. It won't appear in the same workgroup unless you match the workgroup name on your mac, but it will appear if you select "Show Entire Network" on the pc, and then click the icon for "Microsoft Windows Network". Sometimes it takes a while to appear.

This seems like a good thread to post my question...

I've previously managed to get my Mac on various networks for internet use at different places I've worked at, but recently run into problems at my latest posting.

The network is a Windows network with Novell.

I've copied over the IP config data to the Mac and The network status part of System Preferences shows a green dot and that I am connected to the internet. However, when loading a page in Safari it cannot get through to any pages.

I should also mention that when using the internet from the work PCs, a little pop-up appears with "Internet Gateway Authentication" and an address like "chhfd.hfjkd.co.uk" asking for a username and password (which I obviously have!)

Has anybody got any ideas on how I can get my mac to wokr on this network - I only want internet, but it would make my life so much better as my mac has no way of connecting to anything (I am in the middle of nowhere!!!)

I am here for 3 months, so I would be very happy!!! :)

You don't have 'Block pop-ups' enabled do you? Might be a simple problem like that....

Sounds like you need to configure a proxy for net access.

On the PC...
- Open IE
- Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings
- Take a note of the proxy details which I *think* you will find

On the Mac (assuming using Safari)...
- System Preferences > Network
- Select your live NIC and "Configure"
- Select Proxies
- Select "Web Proxy (HTTP)", and enter the proxy server name and port, chances are it will be the same proxy for FTP, HTTPS etc as well.
- Apply, and hopefully you're online!

Thanks very much for your post (and you Gee) - proxies sound like the key - only problem is when I go into "Internet Options" There is no Connections tab. Perhaps this was removed by the network admin to prevent this sort of thing?

I went to http://library.usask.ca/connectfromhome.html which came up with a suggestion for the proxy I was accessing from (e.g. 1.0 abcdsquid.abcd.co.nz:8080 (squid/2.5.STABLE3)) I took away the 1.0 and the bracketed bit at the end and put the rest into Network Porxies settings on the Mac, but this just got Safari to ask me if I would allow it to access the keychain and then cam up with the message that Safari couldn't connect to the website because it couldn't find the server etc.

I don't suppose anyonbe knows any other way that I could get the PC to cough up its Proxy details. As usual the PC help files are predictably useless.

Once again, I would be soooo happy to get this sorted! :)

Go to Start > Run > "regedit" {enter}.

Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" and see if there is a key called "ProxyServer". That should tell you what your proxy is.

You are a God. I am now writing this on my Mac and I couldn't be happier. Turns out the proxy address I got from that site I linked was correct, but I had made a tiny typo. Now it's all good.

However mail seems to be having issues using the proxy... if you know how that could be fixed!

Thanks very much for your help - I might now survive the next 3 months...

I needed to clear up some stuff before i kicked it off, and would be greatful if anyone could help

ive just a got a mac mini its been less than 48hours, one of the reasons that i got was that i wanted my PCs content (mp3s, documents, and maybe some videos) avabile downstairs in my house and not just in my room, and maybe vise versa.

i was wondering whether the soultion this guide shows would be the best opition.

cheers

Firewall software...

Hi

I've been on the computer for hours trying to sort out our Mac & PC network. Just realised that we've got a software firewall on our PC (in addition to the WinXP one). Turned it off, and away we go!

I'm now okay to view the PC from the Mac and the Mac from the PC.

However, we're limited to sharing the home folder on the Mac. We have 2 hard drives on the Mac and would like to be able to view the second one from the PC too - any ideas how to do this?

Thanks for the brilliant guide.

SharePoints.

edit: holy ****! Thread has had over 77,000 views!!!!  :D

I can access my Mac from my PC, but not vice versa.

When I go to Connect to Server and put in smb://ip/pc(name of shared folder) i get an invalid password/user right off the bat, I'm never prompted to put them in... I have 3 users on the PC and only one has a password, but I wouldn't think that would be a problem.. I tried ping-ing the PC and I got info back..

user authentication with OS x

Hi all,

I'm currently trying to put my system X on the windows 2003 network. I can log into the file server with out a problem but i am not sure how do i change settings in the OS x so i can authenticate users through the domain. Please help!!!

I posted this on another board here, but I thought maybe someone here could help me out:

I'm running 10.3 and XP sp2, and have been trying to get them to see each other all day. I can get into the windows box no problem from my mac, all my shared files on my windows machine are easily accessible on my mac.

But I can't get into my mac from my PC. I've turned on windows file sharing, and when I go to log into the mac's ip address (found under the windows sharing menu) in xp, im prompted with a screen asking for my username and password, i enter my macs info, but then i get an error message saying that the folder is not accessible. My mac also doesnt show up in my windows work group, but i can connect to the workgroup on my mac. Anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this?

could anybody or shwa96 post the answer for this???? i want to have full access on my mac from pc. thank you in advance!

I figured it out. I now have full access to everything on my mac, including the external drive. :D So, I guess just disregard my question. Not that anyone was in a hurry to respond...

Different way to access...?

At my office, my Windows PC will appear in the Network icon in the Finder, in the workgroup I specified with Directory Access. My Mac likewise appears under the Microsoft Windows Network, under the same workgroup.

At home, on my Airport network, I have to manually connect them to each other, via the methods stated above. They are on the same subnet, off the same Airport router...so why can't they "see" each other automatically?

Also...how to I share an external FireWire volume with a PC user? I can't find anything under Sharing.

This guide you have here looks good.. but I'm wondering if you could help me out - we have a finiky network system. Our wireless adsl/router acts as a DHCP server and allocates all the other network devices an ip address every so often. Because of this, our file server has a dynamic ip address. With the above instructions, how would I be able to get around this?

At the moment, my apple will authenticate on the network, and i can access the internet, I can see the network in finder, and i can open the server, at which point it asks for my username and password, then it says that i cannot open the alias because the item could not be found. Our server is win 2003. Any ideas on what we could do? or.. should i forget about it all together... ?

First off, a server should never have a dynamic address, give it a static IP address (just take the details of it's current dynamic address, and input them as a static one).

WHY oh WHY?? can I not connect to the PC from Mac

the instructions are amazing. I have tried this and many other similar instruction elsewhere. However I still cannot connect to the PC from my Mac

I have MacOS 10.4
using XP

I have set up user account with password on PC
shared folder and drive on PC

I try to connect "smb" and it goes as far as askingfor my user name and password

i have tried all cases
"blank" and with correct workgroup username and pswd

I get an error "could not connect because user name or password in wrong"

any idea what is stopping me? DO i really need to change my registry setting. I can Ping, and I can access my Mac form the PC. Only not PC from mac

thanks in advance... anyone can you help me??

cheers!!!

Try clearing your keychain (apps->utilities->keychain access)-

Can't ping either computer

I'm trying to set this thing up so that my main computer (the mini w/ Tiger) is connected to my old computer (windows XP SP2) via ethernet so that I can share files (and possibly internet, though it's not entirely necessary). I have internet running into my mini through the airport, and I'm thinking the Mac and PC are having problems communicating because of an issue with IP addresses, but I've hit a wall and read everything I can online.

I can't even ping between the two computers. Every article I've seen online begins with something akin to, "Make sure the two computers can see each other. Good? Great, let's move on..." And I'm sitting back here going, "Nooo! That's the hardest part!"

It appears like my PC is at least being assigned an IP address by the DHCP because the wireless router's IP address is 192.168.2.1, the Mini's airport IP is 192.168.2.3, the Mini's ethernet IP is 169.254.84.17 (completely different from the others, strange...), and the Windows' IP is 192.168.2.5

Can anyone figure out why this won't work. Is this not possible under my setup? Let me know if I need to post any more info. Thanks!

Click Accounts to choose which accounts can use Windows Sharing

Just writing to mention that there is a *potential* bug that causes some headaches in OSX 10.4.2.

In System Preferences -> Sharing -> Windows Sharing, you now have to "Click Accounts to choose which accounts can use Windows Sharing." When you click on this, a list of accounts on your Mac will appear, and you select the ones you want to enable, then type in the password to authenticate the account.

The bug occurs when you type in your Account password and authentication fails ("Incorrect password") -- which isn't correct because your Account password *should* work in this instance. To fix this, go into your account settings (System Preferences -> Accounts -> My Account), and force a change of password for your account. This will enable you to authenticate yourself for Windows Sharing.

Just mentioning for everyone's benefits. Caused a lot of frustration here trying to figure out why I couldn't authenticate myself!
