Also, has anyone else thought to upgrade their RAM say to 16GB and then turn swap off? I saw some folks talk about disabling swap throughout the thread but it hasn't seem to of been discussed in depth.

I just purchased a Samsung 840 pro 256gb, I'll be installing it today after I get home in my 2011 MBP.

I've got a late '11 MBP 15" with 16gb ram and the 840 Pro in 256. Found this thread a few days ago and I've applied the no hibernate tweak. 16gb is a good amount on such a small drive! I haven't seen any issues since I did this - battery is normal, etc.

ditto with my mid 09 mbp 17.

Chameleon

So using Chameleon SSD Optimizer - just to be clear - what are the setting within the program that should be used?

And settings that are not covered in the Chameleon Program should be changed?

Thanks

The only disadvantage to disabling hibernation is that in the event your computer loses all power (AC and battery) while in sleep mode and it shuts down, the data you were working on will not be saved.

If you do not see this happening, then there is not discernible disadvantage.

Doesn't Apple recommend you depleting your battery all the way to reset it? how should this be done if hibernation is disabled?

Also should this be used in lieu of TRIM enabler? would there be any problems using them both? Also do these apps run in the background? or once the settings are switched the app is not necessary anymore?

Use win8 under parallels to update sammy 840

I just updated the firmware on my Samsung 840 Pro, 256GB with OSX following the instructions on Samsung's site:

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads.html

I dont have a cd burner i can hook to my mac mini 2012. I have one in my g5ppc and one in my power book g4ppc and i don't know if they woud show up as choice to boot from. Going to your link I noticed windows users have the option of using the magician software to update the firmware. It can do it with a zip file. I am running windows 8 under parallels, could i just update firmware using windows. Also i guess the samsung update would find the ssd even if it is fusion since it shows up under about this mac--> system report.

Virtualization can pass some instructions to the host to execute them. It was never intended to have direct access to firmware. You're running the risk of corruption at worst, or getting nowhere at best.

A newbie question in several parts…first, thanks for the guide, very informative. Does moving the user home directories from the ssd to the hdd in #5 negate the performance enhancement of the ssd for applications? I copied the code in terminal as you had it written, but if I move all the applications to the hdd what am I using the SSD for other that the operating system? Where /Volumes was in the code, should I have only put the volumes that I wanted to move? ie Downloads, etc? If I’ve done it wrong, will you provide code to undo the change? If I only want to move the data, not the applications, how can I delete that portion of the User file left on the ssd without deleting the applications?

I would only movie the Movies,Music,Pictures,Downloads folders in the User_Dir.

I was under the impression that activating TRIM was not recommended for SandForce based SSDs (ie. Intel 520).
It's not that simple actually. An article on a tech based web site, sorry can't find it now, but it was a review of the new Intel 525 series, said that when the drive is filled to near capacity the Sandforce controller had problems regaining speed after compressed data was deleted, but it also said that if the drive was used as a boot drive, Trim worked OK.
I assume that this issue has deep connections to the firmware employed, which varies greatly with each maker. OWC says it is best to NOT use Trim with their Sandforce drives. I have seen no issues at all using an Intel 335 with Trim enabled, but I only use 100 of the 240GB available, and only have about 40-50GB of compressed data (the problematic type), and that data does not get deleted.
The garbage collection feature seems to work well on Sandforce drives, so if you are concerned about using Trim, just don't enable it.

What about enabling trim using either app on a Crucial M4 SSD? just installed one and am curious about it.

im currently using chameleon sss optimizer (crucial m4 256gb) with options for local tm backups , motion sensor , hibernate etc. i enabled trim, is this software reliable. i see my ssd trim: yes on system report. i just reenabled it when there is update on OS.

very nice and informative guide. i learn a lot. though im not a terminal kind of guy so i use chameleon ssd optimizer.

thread subscribed!

Q> Shutdown or Sleep (close lid) im using m4 256 crucial. since my boot time is 7-9 seconds. is shuting down and power on laptop can degrade faster than sleep? is it ok to put my laptop on sleep for at least 1hour? or shut it down since boot time is as low as 7 seconds. thanks

AnandTech's Review of the Intel 525 seems to support the claim that SandForce based SSD's still have issues with TRIM fully restoring the potential of these drives.

I currently am running an Intel 520 series SSD and have stuck to not running TRIM, in part because the software utilities that are available (TRIM enabler and Chameleon SSD Optimizer) do not fully support Intel's line of SSDs (most of the information provided for others such as Crucial and Samsung is simply not reported).

M4 uses a Marvell controller so I recommend enabling TRIM.

So I disabled some of these features via terminal, such as the hibernation, no local backups, etc.. this Chameleon app isn't recognizing these changes.. if I manually set to "Off" in the app, will it do anything?

Are there any recommended tweaks if you are running windows through boot camp? or should the osx tweaks be covered through the whole drive?
