You probably need some sort of driver (System Extension). I got a USB 1.0 card once for a PC I used to own. Sat around for years as I killed the PC, until I got an OS9 Mac with PCI slots. I had to hunt down drivers because the card was not recognized under OS9. Once I found some extensions and installed them the card was recognized and that old PowerMac 6500 I have can now use USB.

I'd start your search with a Google search for "OS9 SATA system extensions".

After giving the highly recommended Intech speed tools disk driver a trial - without success - I believe it is the PCI rev2.1 -limit of the beige G3 which prevents the Sil3112 card from being detected.

This is my 2ch PCI SIL3112 card, only difference is that the ROM chip on mine (128k 39SF010A) is soldered, it is not in socket like in this picture:

This is the result:

Success :)

More Info :D

SATA HDDs attached to flashed card are listed in ATA section (doesn't bother me at all)

Card is bootable, tried to boot 10.5.8 and 10.4.6 (picture below)

Any benchmarks with your SATA card + SSD like the Crucial M500?

It would be awesome if you could get nearly 150MB/s read & writes!

One thing that I would suggest, or ask, if you've the time, is to post a reference of the part numbers of cards that have the SIL controller, and any cards that have RAID support that can be flashed.

What people would find useful, includes the bus architecture:
PCI-33 (32-bit)
PCI-33 (64-Bit)
PCI-66
PCI-X
PCIe

The 64-bit cards, as I had mentioned in another thread, are quite hard to find. The HP Proreliant HBA cards are PCI 64-Bit@33Mhz, and may be something that it is possible to flash with some firmware image for booting, else, can be used as RAID controllers, with driver support.

There is far less documentation on the PCI-33 cards, than exists for PCI-X, and that is still more scarce than that which exists for PCIe.

Member flyproductions has done some benchmarks you can find here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1650568/ Look for the "cubeuser.de" links post#19

Some of the benchmarks show that the SSDs tested are almost beaten by a Samsung 1TB HDD in throughput.

If you are talking about PCI instead of PCIe the mac is 35MB/s for 32bit and 62MB/s for 64bit/PCI-X

You can find a list of cards with chipsets here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1650568/

Do you think this one will work? http://bit.ly/OfufkZ

Otherwise I'll go to the nearest computer discount and buy the first SIL3112 card I see.
Thank you!

Probably - obviously you'll only get one SATA port, but if that's all you need then this card should be fine.

Yes, I only need a SATA port for the boot drive, other storage drives will be connected to the onboard IDE controller in my 2001 QS.

Ok so I could go for that one. Thank you :)

Sorry for posting again. :p

I found this card. http://www.inline-info.de/en/inline-detail/artikel/8481/
I think it uses the SIL3112 chipset, even though they only say "Silicon Image chipset" in the description (in the software zip file, the readme includes SIL3112 chipset so I assume it uses that chip), but I'm not sure. This would be better than the one I linked above.

Do you have any experience with this card? Can you tell me what chipset it uses?

Thank you again!

That card's even more likely to work - it's following the same board design and layout as all of the ones being sold from China (which are known to work with no problems). You can pretty much guarantee it's using the SIL3112 as the Windows drivers, as you say, have the files for this chipset.

Thank you man! You really helped. I can physically check the card eventually to try and read the chipset number on the chip. I'll let you know!

OS9 sata card support

HI im looking to boot into OS9 using a Sata Card and an ssd, anyone know which of the cards are best for OS9 booting ? will I need an sata extension ?this machine is going to be an OS9 repository made from the last most powerful mac to boot into OS9 a G4 dual1.25 MDD fw400, but i will probably put the internals in a proper cooled ventilated PC after much modification to the case, I thinks the windtunnels case design sucks and im a quiet freak. Someone on ebay wants £55 for a seritek 1S2 PCI and im thinking I can sort this out cheaper as you suggest, by flashing a PC PCI card ? the one you list below from ebay which you have flashed ≥

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4005020653...:MEBIDX:IT

might it work when flashed for booting directly into OS 9 as well as OS X ? since OS 9 is my aim ? anyone tested OS 9 booting with PCI sata ?

Also I just found this even cheaper ? might this be the cheapest card to work with this flashing method ?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Port-SATA-Serial-ATA-PCI-Controller-Card-/251028210181?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_InterfaceCards&hash=item3a72728205

I suppose ill have to order and find out ?

Also anyone know how to get round Apple stopping OS9 filesharing beyond osx 10.6 ? as I would still like to network to this machine from my 10.8 27", Ive tried some hacking about with older core sharing app service and unlimiting authentication methods hacks, but still its refusing with an error about filesharing compatibility. when going to the ip directly etc, its as though it knows i want to connect to OS9 and is trying its best to thwart me ;)

I'd love to help, but I don't have the card and my QS had a bad motherboard.

Hi, I also would like to see your results. As mentioned earlier my setup is a G3 Powermac + OS9 native system.

Flashing that cheap but well made SIL3112 SATA card (see pic below) was an easy 5 min job following harrymatic's instructions of post #1.

However, I am not able to use this card because it is not recognized which most probably has to do with PCI - compliance of v2.1 maximum my G3 offers.
Since your G4 MDD does work with generation v2.2 PCI cards (maybe also v2.3 ?) you shouldn't encounter any problems.

I forgot I had a 3114 Card, does anyone know if that works?

A google only turns up two pages that don't give a complete yes or no answer. Later, I might try flashing...

I don't think any manufacturer ever made a Mac card which used that chip, or if they did a firmware image never surfaced, so it cannot be flashed.

Sadly, I discovered that the card uses the SIL3512 chipset, which seem to be problematic in QuickSilver PowerMacs. :(

Have a look at this: http://www.applefritter.com/content/sil3512-flashing

The link in the post is long dead, but you can still get the flashing program from the Internet Archive here : http://web.archive.org/web/20110107124934/http://www.wiebetech.com/download.php?id=119

Unlike the SIL3112 flasher, this program works under OS X.

EDIT: Wait no, I just read that it doesn't work on Quicksilver Macs as you said.

Sometimes a bit of luck is really handy :) managed to find this one for 13€ including shipping. It has the SIL3112ACT144 chipset on it and best of all: a SATA port for external drives! http://bit.ly/1plhr8a
Awesome! I'll keep you updated :)

Hello, Thank you for this thread!
BUYERS BEWARE!
I bought one of these on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/161225040708?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I flashed it on a Dell 4600 using the poster's instructions, and it seemed to update the bios just fine, but when I then stuck it in my QS G4, I'd get the chime, but no boot. The chip is Sil3112ACTG144-E, but the EEPROM chip is SSTMPF 39SF010. Online documentation says that that chip is 128k. Assuming the problem is with the EEPROM, I went back and bought the last card on eBay that was linked early in this thread which was supposed to have the SST29EE010 chip--the photo in the listing also showed that number. When my purchase arrived, unfortunately, the card that they shipped was not the card pictured, but was instead, the exact same card I purchased earlier with the 39SF010 chip. Once again, with the second card, the flashing went fine, but once again, I get the chime, but no boot. Besides the different EEPROM chip, the card also does not have all the PCI pin contacts of the pictured card, as you can see in my link above. Bummer x2! This card seems to be the card that is sold by many sellers on eBay, so beware!, unless someone can write a new bios that works, but maybe the missing pins makes it useless from the start.

There is a problem with PCI identification if you have other PCI cards installed in the QuickSilver. Mine does the same. The only way to boot is (after a few attempts) to use the SATA card only.

digisurfer and mikiotty,

Sorry for any problems this has caused - I've now put together a new firmware image that should work. The way the SIL3112 controller works is that it reads the EEPROM backwards, the very last dozen or so bytes contain the data which it needs to set up PCI addresses, etc. I had put this data in the wrong place in the ROM, so it was luck of the draw whether the Mac would automatically assign them. Here's the link to the new firmware - I hope it works for you. (I've tested it on my G4 MDD, but that already worked fine with the old one)

I've also updated the link on the first post to point to the new firmware.

No problems man :) you're doing a great job anyway!
I'm reflashing the card right now, I'll let you know!

EDIT: IT WORKS!!! Nothing on first boot, turned off the Mac and now it's working!!! I'll let you know if it works well!
