removing the 3.5mm audio jack was a great idea, as was removing the homebutton. This is something that might be a good idea in the future, but not right now. The tech just isn't there yet and too many people rely on the cable, eve for things like CarPlay. in 5 years? Yes, this seems natural.

LOL Apple.

They don't even have 20% of the smartphone market but they throw their weight around like they are a monopoly.

Not even 1 in 5 smartphones is an iPhone. Let that sink in.

Why do they think they have so much power that they can throw industry standard in the garbage and force everyone onto an underperforming and proprietary technology?

The same way you charge it now, but instead of plugging the wire that comes out of the charger into the phone you set the phone on top of the charging pad. Not rocket science.
Apparently you don’t travel much. How big a purse do I need to carry so I can charge my phone on the plane and in the hotel ballroom where I work more than 12 hrs? How about when I go to other countries? This is a dumb move. Unless they can put in a battery that lasts 24 hrs while doing the most battery-intensive activities (eg, watching movies, using the hotspot) all day long, it’s a no go.

Apple or any other company does not have to develope an all-day battery, they only do so to stay competitive as a selling/marketing features to set they products apart.

Apple will gladly sell you a hunchback battery case for your next iPhone to maximize profits, while making the excuse that battery technology is just not there yet for all-day usage. It’s not in Apples benefit to have users not to recharge their phones often as the battery will last that much longer, meaning people will use their iPhones for 2-4 years without requiring a battery replacement sooner, as the situation we presently live in.

Most apps, games, etc presently do not even harness the full potential of ARM chips since iPhone 6S/7. Most people don’t even use AR or other CPU intensive apps, mainly some games and social apps. What people need is better batteries in iPhones not faster CPU, I have never heard an iPhone customer complain of how slow their device is, I have heard that it does not last long enough or as long as it used to.

Apple tax, charge an absurd amount. If you are referring to AirPower, its is overpriced to a point, however it introduces and possible expands/extends on the Qi standard.

AirPower should cost around $99-119 USD max, can you imagine the power adapter included with that things to charge 3 devices simultaneously. What if someone places 3 iPhones? That means the AirPower adapter would have to be 60W minimum from lightening to USB-C.

So you are agreeing that aS its 3 times the size of a normal charging pad, it can he priced at 20.odd times the price. Mmm, you and Apple are well suited....

I’ve been to airports who offer Qi charging stands now
I travel at least 10 trips a year and have never seen one. And even the plugin places are hard to get to when they do exist. Someone is usually already plugged in. At least my last resort is one of the portable chargers I often carry. At a restaurant, for example.

As an owner of the iPhone X, I couldn't disagree with this more. People ask me how I like my phone all the time and I tell them the same thing, "It's the worst iPhone I've ever owned. No headphone jack, no Touch ID, Face ID is terrible in comparison, I don't use wireless charging (I have a mat, but it's not convenient, can't use the phone while charging), and to top it all off, it's got the buggiest version of iOS ever on it.

I'll be seriously considering a downgrade if the new phones in September don't address these issues.
And I love FaceID. iPhone X has 99% satisfaction (real numbers, not just personal experience) so you're clearly in the minority.

Sorry it didn't work for you.

iOS 11.4 is not buggy...works great.

Mute switch, volume control buttons, power on button. Would not mind if they were gone. Maybe even the sound grill. The connector, would be the last one to go in my list.
FYI I use the mute button on my phone very often. It would be a pain for me to have to dig into settings to change the sound settings every time when now i can flip a little switch.

We are close to getting 10-12 hours of on screen time. That is enough battery life during the day.

Look at the laptops, they all offer incredible battery life nowadays, so much that people don’t even look around for plugs anymore.
have you ever used your iPhone hotspot to download 4K stock movies that are gigabytes in size because you are working in a venue that doesn’t have internet service? Do that and let me know how long your battery lasts.

Long term this makes sense (10+ years). Don't see it happening any time soon.
Why in 10 years and not now?

Wouldn’t consider that a normal use case, would you?

How this would be REMOTELY acceptable to anyone is beyond me. Ive's ego is out of control.

So if you’re travelling (airports and such) instead of just taking a cord with you and a tiny adapter the size of your thumb... you’d have to cart around a gigantic (relatively) and slow wireless charging pad.
Not if they use the AirPod case as a sort of wireless charger that is able to contactless-ly transmit energy to the iPhone. There’s plenty of room in the AirPod case for more battery, and they’ve been working on this method of wireless charging without contact as well. It’s not that hard to imagine lol

Normal for me. And that’s all I care about. I’m sure I’m not the only one who needs wired charging in places where no wireless charging would ever exist. How about restaurants and Starbucks? I can’t predict when my battery is about to die and usually it’s when I’m out and about, like on a tour in a foreign country or on the road for my job. Would YOU like your phone to die while you are walking around a foreign city and have to remember where your hotel is?

Did you forget advancements in battery tech, wireless tech, and other things that don’t exist today or the fact it’s not even a reality?

It obviously WASN'T acceptable, so it WASN’T done.

"Removing the Lightning connector would also prevent an iPhone from directly connecting to a wide range of peripherals"
Hopefully Apple doesn't read this sentence, as it may be beyond their ability to resist.

Please provide me a product from a competitor available on the market that can wirelessly charge three devices at the same time, priority manage the power delivery required to the specific device it senses, provides charge information of all connected devices placed on a charging pad, ramp up or reduce power to standby mode, etc.

There is a reason why AirPower is not realessed yet, Apple has to work with Qi for the charge specification and need a custom ARM chip for management with a stripped down OS. For example look at the W1 chip in AirPods, the co-processor chips in iPhones. Apple got into the chip business to create custom chips to compliment or exceed what is presently available on the market.

I believe you are under the impression it is just a basic charging pad, for all we know it maybe able to transfer data when connected to a Mac, maybe second Gen, don’t know as Apple has not revealed any details. Maybe it can charge an iPad or future implementation, possibilities are optimistic.

The value is in the eye of the beholder/consumer.

We don’t know the validity behind this article, as its mainly speculation and of course, unconfirmed. As for the future, its very possible this _could_ happen, but as for the iPhone X, I don’t believe this article at all, regardless of Gurmans ‘Inside’ information.

This would have been a colossally dumb move by Apple.

Forget the nightmare for charging in different places or say in a car.

How is CarPlay supposed to work? The vast majority of CarPlay cars rely on a physical connection.

I didn’t really mind losing the headphone jack, but the lightning port would’ve crippled the iPhone’s usability.

I use my phone as my headunit in my car. Bypassed the stock system completely and use a dsp with a digital signal from my phone and camera usb kit to a dac back to my dsp to run my whole system. I couldn’t get on board with wireless completely. I don’t want to start carrying around old hardware year after year if I want to run my setup this way.
Getting rid of cables is a bad choice of you need faster charging and don’t have wireless everywhere to use. I only use wireless going to bed.

That may be all you care about, but that doesn't make a common use case. You would presume that they may have thought through the negatives with an approach like this and have solutions for them.

Maybe?

No I wouldn't like my phone to die when walking around a foreign city. However I currently do this a lot, and the phone works just fine without going flat all the time. (Also, it's really not the end of the world if your phone dies. Travelled in most countries in Asia for 10 months of my life and didn't even have a smartphone back then (gasp!)).

I’m still mad they took away the headphone jack, take away the lightning port and it will be years until I buy another iPhone. I’ll keep my 6s Plus until it no longer functions. Wireless charging and wireless data transfer are not good enough yet. And even though Bluetooth headphones are convenient, their sound and voice quality are still not as good as a pair of $20 wired Sony headphones.

Wireless future is still years away.

Apple is the only company who does not support high-quality codec for BT headphones (I am sorry, I can't remember what it is called).

We've had wireless charging on our
last 3 phones. We also have a few charging pads that don't get used. With quick charging you can charge your phones in 30min. and you're good to go all night.

USB-C is not coming. The lightning port will go away soon. All of you people need to get over this. It's coming.

I'll get over it with an Android. An iPhone I can only charge on my desk at home would be all but useless. It's not a matter of preference. It's a matter of the damn battery won't last.
