No Lightning port would mean no external peripherals:
• No HDMI Adapter
• No Guitar connector
• No Wired connection to laptop when not on WiFi
• No Flash Drive connectivity
• No USB adapter

It would be a disaster if Apple eliminates the port completely.
Replacing it with USB-C may or may not happen. We'll see.

I'm still upset about them removing the 3.5mm audio jack.

Quit making things difficult for the consumer!
Agree completely!

Can't remember how many times I tried to plug my iPhone 7 into Sennheisers at work (or plug it in stereo speakers when visiting friends, for example) only to remember the Jack is gone and I don't have the converter with me.

Rumor
a currently circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth.

At this rate we could see an iPhone without Display sooner or later. Rethink everything!

how will the phone with Car Play? Personally, I have a 2013 Charger and it doesn't have car play. Does car play require USB connection? Does it work via Bluetooth? If a USB connection is required, how will it work if you take away the damn port. WOW!!!!

I don't see any reason why even think about removing it.

Maybe it's some kind of Apple employee challange: "What's the most extreme change that will stop people from buying an iPhone?" I don't really know :D purely stupid

More like "Look, we are the only ones in this bracket. far and between , only a few others have actually done it too, so it's gotta be "new" "

Absolutely! If they can quadruple the battery life, great, no complaints from me then! But the idea that Mark Gurman says they "considered" removing it for the iPhone X has to be the biggest load of nonsense I've seen. They would have to have been insane for that to have been a serious consideration with current device battery life.
Any article that claims to know what Apple was "thinking" is utter nonsense. They have no idea.

These "leaks" can't even get supply chain orders right...like ever. If they can't figure out Apple's supply chain, they have no chance to figure out anything Apple "considered" doing in terms of strategy.

It kind of wasn’t taken badly, at least in reality of sales.

People yell and scream, but later realize they don’t care and would rather have an iPhone.

Then Android phones were like, yeah... let’s remove it too. Pixel...
As an owner of the iPhone X, I couldn't disagree with this more. People ask me how I like my phone all the time and I tell them the same thing, "It's the worst iPhone I've ever owned. No headphone jack, no Touch ID, Face ID is terrible in comparison, I don't use wireless charging (I have a mat, but it's not convenient, can't use the phone while charging), and to top it all off, it's got the buggiest version of iOS ever on it.

I'll be seriously considering a downgrade if the new phones in September don't address these issues.

USB-C is not coming. The lightning port will go away soon. All of you people need to get over this. It's coming.

It's coming, then I'm going... Bye Apple. You will have completely lost me. I've already moved on from 30+ years on Apple computers, to now having a Windows 10 workstation. If you remove your one and final port, I'll be moving on from the iPhone and iPad as well. Toodles!

So all our brand new cars that still have wired CarPlay will be obsolete? They sure as hell better provide an adapter for that!

If there are ZERO ports, where do you plug-in the adapter? o_O

Jony Ive doesn’t decide this. It’s not happening anytime soon. Gurman just needs sensationalism so his reporting gets clicks/shares.

It's only sensationalism if they did not indeed "weigh the decision of removing the wired charging system", otherwise he's simply reporting a truth.

Given that we cannot conclusively prove that these internal considerations never occurred & given that Gurman has a great track record of leaking accurately I think it's a bit harsh to dismiss this as clickbait.

Wireless CarPlay functionality is underway. It’s unfortunate that your vehicle may not support it, maybe a manufacturer updates the firmware/software to allow it to resolve your concerns in the future.

Yea, don't hold your breath on that. Car's audio systems are out dated almost as soon as you drive them off the lot. I have a 13 Charger, last update was JAN 2017 for my unit (think it was the only one since I bought my car), however, there have been how many updates to iOS. One of them are preventing me from using my iPhone as an iPod in my car. So, it's using Bluetooth or Aux cable, which are both inconvenient when driving.

Might I suggest you invest in an editor, @arn ? As an editor of mine would have told the author of this piece, "Quit writing fat copy."

Original (with my comments)
Just to be absolutely clear (Are you saying you'd be intentionally unclear?), Gurman confirmed to me (Who else would he be confirming to?) that (Do you really need to use "that"? No. You don't.) this would have included removing the Lightning connector from the device. In fact, (In fact? Are you implying you'd mislead your readers? More importantly, does this need to be there?) his report notes that Apple designers eventually hope to "remove most of the external ports and buttons on the iPhone," although this is likely multiple years away ("Multiple years away"? Stop being redundant because no one likes redundancy.).

Edited:
Gurman confirmed Apple designers hoped to remove the iPhone's Lightning connector and buttons. However, these changes are probably years away.

Apple is REALLY trying to lose me as a 20-year client: ***** on the Mac, including no new Mac Mini for years, screws up the almost perfect MacBook Pro, and keeps on making the iPhone worse and worse. To say nothing of the disaster that is High Sierra. The only silver lining for me has been CarPlay which IMHO is better than AndroidAuto, but I'll learn to live with AA if Apple continues in a direction where they are almost completely a fashion and NOT a technology brand.

TIM Cook is never wrong. Just look at the stock price.. it's up! That means he is right!

No ports? How can he be wrong, stock price!
Old outdated tech in Macs, naa.. look at the stock price!
Your key board doesn't work, you are wrong, look at the stock price!

Stock price stock price stock price... Tim is GOD.

I can't wait for an iphone Z. It's just a sheet of polished aluminium. IT WILL be amazing for 2k. Stock price will skyrocket!

Car manufacturers are not concerned. They MOnis to include any gimmicky technology to appeal to a future customer to into effect them to buy it, resulting in sales. After you signed on the lease/finance/payment contract line you are only afforded a courtesy from the dealership for 1-3 years before they try to sell you something new and reach into your hard earned savings. Having CarPlay, AndroidAuto is a lure for manufacturers to include to sell more of they products, it is not a money generator to keep supporting a 3rd party technology as it cost too much in resources/manpower hours.

Sad but true, we need an open-source solution for the entertainment/infotainment system in vehicles to allow free updates/upgrades by the end user.

Years away but how do you get there except to go forward with changes. Don’t get mad, look for the positive.

I wouldn’t be mad if they just kept the headphone jack and kept on improving Bluetooth! It wouldn’t cost them much, they’d still make a big profit and when Bluetooth is up to par with the headphone jack, by all means remove it.

The only reason Apple removed it is for profits- both in savings from not including a headphone jack in their phones and to promote the sale of their AirPods.

Replacing it with USB-C may or may not happen. We'll see.

AppleTV 4K = HDMI
WiFi/Bluetooth MIDI = ???
AirDrop/WiFi drive = wired connect not required, an NFC solution would be better with wider bandwidth.
WiFi hard drive = Flash drive not required.
WiFi hubs to USB/SD = USB options available presently.

That's great and all, but how are you going to charge the phone in your car? Or at the airport? This is a design edict disconnected from the real world. Time to leave the glass bubble, Jonny.
Hopefully Apple will only do this further down the track when TRUE wireless charging becomes a reality.
Therefore there won't be charging pads but charging hubs/areas at airports/malls/libraries/uni campus etc and your car will have wireless charging capability. Therefore it should just be like wi-fi. There shouldn't be any reliance on a physical device that your iOS device needs to be placed upon or near.
That's the future that others have mentioned but until that future arrives Apple should not be considering going there at this point in time.

Unless of course Apple have some kind of powerful wireless power broadcasting device that they're ready to launch at the same time ...... yeh, I doubt it.
