"Removing the Lightning connector would also prevent an iPhone from directly connecting to a wide range of peripherals"
Hopefully Apple doesn't read this sentence, as it may be beyond their ability to resist.

Isn’t it funny that when the headphone jack was removed, people accused Apple of using this opportunity to sell dongles and now, Apple is being accused of a move which would ironically remove their ability to sell dongles and lightning accessories?

Someone explain to me why they're all in on USB-C for Macs, but the idea of USB-C bi-directional to a phone is a non-starter? Like, USB-C plug in either side, charge, and data, all unified.

Yet, somehow, lightning is a sacred cow...

Well, all I can hope is that not all Android manufacturers will follow suit. I'm not getting another iPhone unless my 7 Plus is obliterated somehow.

Even then I'll just get another one like it.

That's great and all, but how are you going to charge the phone in your car? Or at the airport? This is a design edict disconnected from the real world. Time to leave the glass bubble, Jonny.

There are many wireless after market solutions for cars and I've seen a few charging pads in airports/coffee shops. By the time this is actually introduced for iPhones I would imagine this would be less of an issue.

That's because the x is standard speed charging. Wait till next year when apple copy Samsung and their fast wireless charging devices.. the keynote headlines are being written as we speak, about how they have rebuilt wireless charging from the ground up lol
I know a few iPhone x users who already use Samsung's fast charging qi wireless pad. Lol. Samsung screens samsumg chargers all Samsung all the time for iPhone x. Jk

Because the advantages of usb C on a computer are less relevant to a mobile device. You don’t need to plug in monitor hubs and E-GPUs, thunderbolt 3 transfer speeds are moot on a device where majority of its data transfers take place wirelessly, plus lightning already reversible and simply better designed and engineered overall.

Given how many people I see with portable battery packs plugged into their phones while out and about, if you thought removing the 3.5mm audio jack was taken badly, you ain't seen nothing yet...

It was only “taken badly” by the loud minority on here and other tech sites, some who are still whining about it as if that whining will somehow bring it back, even though Apple still sold and continue to sell millions of iPhones without it 2 years later which is proof enough that it’s something most people can adapt to.

Lol, a buttonless iPhone. So to adjust the volume of your music you'll need a pair of expensive Siri blessed headphones and start talking to the air or you'll need to unlock your phone and fiddle around for the on screen slider.
Sounds pretty cheesy.

This doesn't help regarding CarPlay in my 2017 car. Not gonna buy a new car, and can't buy a new stereo for the car. So, I'd just not buy iPhones. I'll say again this "rumor" is just Gurman clickwhoring.

This is exactly why the removal of things like the headphone jack piss me off so much. When everything is proprietary, then the company can obsolete or change how things work so easily to force you into an upgrade if you want to keep using the features. The headphone jack had no licensing or proprietary anything with it and it just works.

Wireless CarPlay functionality is underway. It’s unfortunate that your vehicle may not support it, maybe a manufacturer updates the firmware/software to allow it to resolve your concerns in the future.

I don't think you understand how car manufacturers work... They cheap out on everything they can. The current system probably barely has enough processing power to handle what it's already doing making a firmware update fix virtually impossible. I hope I am wrong, but that is a pretty typical move for car manufacturers.

Sacred cow because of the licensing fee apple charges to people that make the peripherals.

I honestly can’t wait for true wireless charging. It’s so tedious having to plug your phone in and out every day. I know there’s a charging mat but that isn’t really wireless when it still has to be plugged in with a wire and you can’t use your phone freely at the same time. I think we’re going to look back at wires as something ancient that we couldn’t believe we had to put up with in a few years time. It will be similar to using a wired modem for your computer. It’s still faster using wired, yes, but we can’t go back to that now with wireless internet being far more convenient and necessary in today’s world and we’ll think the same about wireless charging to the point where it’s something we don’t even think about anymore like WiFi.

How's that? Because Apple considered an option?

You may not be aware that product development/engineering involves a ton of considerations and trades during the development process.

Why is that stupid?

Because deep down side, these people know it’s not a matter of whether Apple will remove the lightning port, but when.

It kind of wasn’t taken badly, at least in reality of sales.

People yell and scream, but later realize they don’t care and would rather have an iPhone.

Then Android phones were like, yeah... let’s remove it too. Pixel...
Would you say that Apple copied gestures and having no home button from Android? Interesting you say Android phones copied Apple, yet there were Android phones without a headphone jack before Apple did it. Isn't it interesting when you do your own research instead of spewing out lies?

Ture. Just like Apple Desktop Bus (ADB), Centronics, SCSI, USB-A, etc ports.

Certainly doesn't make Apple stupid considering potential paths going forward.

Lol, I do understand my friend. Each manufacturer looks at cost cutting measures to meet the minimum requirement to operate whatever entertainment/infotainment system, as it affects they profits.

Some manufacturers provide an update here an there for free or a fee, others not so. The info/entertainment console is just a hook/cherry onto top feature to secure a possible vehicle buyer.

The key phrase in this article is "pushing users towards...". I refuse to be pushed into being online for something like charging, or synching, or time machine backups. In my case, "wireless" can only mean that my router's WIFI somehow will charge my device. wtf?
