That's great and all, but how are you going to charge the phone in your car? Or at the airport? This is a design edict disconnected from the real world. Time to leave the glass bubble, Jonny.
Follows the trend of most of their design decisions lately.

That's my point. If you thought people were upset, imagine how upset they're going to be with something that is used every day to keep the phone running.

How many people want to use their phone while it charges? A lot!
What data do you have on that? Rest assured, Apple was right about removing the headphone jack and they’ll be right if they remove the lightning port. (See sales)

Yeah, Apple will remove the jack and give you no ability to use your phone or fail make other advancements to render it irrelevant.

Unless Apple somehow forces car manufactures to adopt in-car Qi charging and wireless CarPlay (preferably a backwards compatible option) I see this leading to lots of lost revenue from Apple Music cancelations. I actually really like CarPlay although Siri is still suspect sometimes, especially like that iOS 12 will let me use Waze w/ CarPlay(finally)... I literally purchased my current vehicle with CarPlay as one of my top priorities, and while I get nothing is future proof - I'm not buying a new car yet, so if I can't use CarPlay with a new phone (because mine doesn't do wireless CarPlay) I really wouldn't need Apple Music anymore, I'd turn back to Sirius, and use my car's Nav System, which is still light years ahead of Apple Maps BTW.

For better or worse, Apple made a bold statement that expressed commitment to USB-C by eliminating all the data ports on the MacBook Pro and MacBook line and only included USB-C. If Apple leaves the Lightning port instead of replacing it with USB-C on the 2018 iPhone, it will clearly prove how inconsistent, clueless, mediocre, and useless Tim Cook is.

Tim Cook is not Apple's head designer.

Lug? The pad weighs maybe 3 ounces.

I meant “lug” as in physical size, not weight. When i am out an about, i can easily carry my iphone in my back pocket & the small iphone charger in my front pocket. But carrying around the upcoming apple airpower wireless charging mat around with me would be awkward. Yes, its light...but it’s much larger than the current iphone wall charger.

I’m sorry but that’s not realistic at all it until you can wireless charge in a room with no pad.

Obviously Gurman reported this for clicks. Apple designers might have portless prototypes in the labs but they don’t decide whether the lightning port goes away or not. Also, so long as desktop iTunes is still required to perform certain tasks like restoring a device or syncing media/files the port is not going away. But hey, Gurman makes news and gets a freak out on rumor/tech sites and Twitter so mission accomplished.

If a software update bricks your Apple Watch, which has no port, your only option is to send it to Apple and wait days to get it back. The Watch is an accessory - now imagine telling customers they need to go days without using their phone, the device Apple has spent years positioning as the center of their world.

Wireless reliabliblity with iTunes, Xcode and software updates needs to be 100% before they try this. Any developer can tell you that they aren’t even close as of now.

Well, I use AirPods and love them, so removing the 3.5mm jack was a non-issue for me. But as someone who uses an iPhone for long FaceTime calls, and uses an iPhone on long flights (and I see a lot of other people doing the same), I think it'd be extremely inconvenient to have no wired charging port. I also see people every single day walking around with their phones plugged into battery packs.

So I don't have any "data" on it, just like you don't have any data on the opposite case, but if you can name practical advantages to removing a wired charging port I'm all ears, because I only see disadvantages. If the iPhones already have wireless charging, how does removing the wired charging port make them better and more convenient?

Burps - for a moment I was thinking someone dared to “protect” Joni against himself, which is assuming the Impossible.
Gurman must have missed some nuances, I guess...

Apple: don't you dare to touch my volume buttons. Stop the button-less/port-less madness.

I don't think they'll ditch the buttons, but they will replace them with something similar to the home button of iPhone 7.
There is a similar rumour regarding Apple Watch, no more physical buttons. It doesn't mean you won't be able to change volume but you'll press an area and receive a feedback

I think Ive is cutting corners in the wrong places on this one.

For instance, today if I want to charge my iPhone anywhere all I need is to take a piece of wire wrapped up that I can attach to any USB socket. In Ive's world I would take what? A plastic plaque tailed by wire (more stuff)? What's the point? Is it to get rid of some orifice that I almost never look at it or to make charging simpler? I wonder if nature took Johny stance on design and beauty how would people have children, breath, ear ... It must be a pain for him to look at a person :)

I do believe that all the obstacles around charging, accessories, syncing, audio, either are solved, or can be solved (and are in the process of being solved).

BUT, what will always terrify me about this kind of thing is that lack of a last resort.... The DFU. Something solid and physical to recover your iPhone.

If I'm not mistaken, Apple Watch has a hidden port for use by Apple only - I'd hope iPhone would have something like this.

Oops, - for a moment I was thinking someone dared to “protect” Joni against himself, which is assuming the Impossible.

Jony Ive doesn’t decide whether an iPhone has a lightning port or not.

I'm all about wireless, I have 3rd party Qi chargers everywhere, use 3rd party BT devices everywhere as well. But I need/use the jack as well.

But this notion is beyond stupid and I refuse to believe Apple is crazy.

There are many applications with accessory pieces (360 cameras, IR Cameras, emergency recovery) where a USB connection is needed as well as simple charging with a cord vs bulky wireless clunks.

I'm still harboring venom for Apple on the headphone jack and will now never buy Apple accessories, this would be the end for me plain and simple. But I'm completely doubtful that this will happen anytime soon.

I think the mute switch needs to go. We’ve lived this long without it on iPad, ‍♂️.

Ultimately, with Raise To Wake or Tap to Wake, I see these devices having a single rocker switch that will replace the volume buttons:
• Press once UP/DOWN to change volume
• Press-hold UP for Siri
• Press-twice-hold UP for AP
• Press once UP WHILE IN CAMERA for shutter; Press-hold UP WHILE IN CAMERA for burst-mode

Did I miss anything?

Jony Ive doesn’t decide this. It’s not happening anytime soon. Gurman just needs sensationalism so his reporting gets clicks/shares.

Why would Apple want to switch phones/tablets to USB-C? Also, what's the advantage in having all devices run connect on USB-C? What would people do with that, try and plug in a Retina monitor directly to my iPhone? Not likely. Aside from having all things use the same cable, I don't get why that's important.

Apple has made a big deal about getting devices slimmer and slimmer. USB makes the device fatter.

I can very much see this happening in 2027, not 3 or 5 years from now. In fact, even when it happens, Apple is likely to still sell iPhones with charging ports as option. But for users who confidently live and work in wireless charging environments, they could opt for it. We are just at the infancy. I can imagine airports in the next 10 years having wireless charging stations, wireless power might actually become a reality by then.

I have owned three iPhones so far and I have never used use the audio jack on any of them. My iPod 3rd gen, I used the audio jack religiously, but I think it affected my hearing. So, I avoid using head phones as much since then.
