IF Apple gets rid of the lightening port, i see them replacing it with a usb-c port. I think we are a loooong way off from getting rid of all ports. What are you suppose to do when on the road? Lug your wireless charging pad around with you too? Until wireless charging thru the air is ubiquitous everywhere, i think having a portless iphone would be pointless. Ha ha.

What are the advantages of switching to USB-C for an iPhone user?
The average user already have multiple lighting cable and accessories, the lighting port is reversible and the end of the cable is smaller. You could use the same cable to power the Mac and the iPhone, but you'll end up using dongles to connect accessories or to use old cables.

Let's see how Qi charging pads are deployed in places like hotels, restaurants, bars and cars. As soon as wireless charging is everywhere I'm sure Apple will remove the cable.
Too bad their own charger isn't available yet, it means it isn't so easy to implement wireless charging and they need more time. Of course 2017 was too early, but they'll get there

Jony Ive doesn’t decide this. It’s not happening anytime soon. Gurman just needs sensationalism so his reporting gets clicks/shares.

Hope so. Because the idea for now looks really bad. Mind you, I'm one of the few that did not mind so much going all USB-C with the Macbooks, neither minded when they got rid of CD-ROM and Floppies. The headphone jack I was kind of neutral. But this idea is not in the name of good design, for now at least.

What data do you have on that? Rest assured, Apple was right about removing the headphone jack and they’ll be right if they remove the lightning port. (See sales)

Yeah, Apple will remove the jack and give you no ability to use your phone or fail make other advancements to render it irrelevant.

Sales are not a good barometer of whether or not it's a good decision. If you want iOS, that doesn't mean you don't want a headphone jack or lightning port, it means you want iOS, and you are willing to suffer with the other garbage. Same with the newer MacBook Pros. The keyboard is a horrible, terrible, piece of garbage. The USB-C ports are waaaaay ahead of their time. No HDMI port is simply a money grab so you'll have to buy adapters. But yet, if you want MacOS and a new machine, you have no choice.

Like the poster above says, it's an abusive relationship. Once you are in the Apple ecosystem and like it, you actually lose options. You want their software, but you are stuck with their consumer unfriendly hardware decisions.

Obviously Gurman reported this for clicks. Apple designers might have portless prototypes in the labs but they don’t decide whether the lightning port goes away or not. Also, so long as desktop iTunes is still required to perform certain tasks like restoring a device or syncing media/files the port is not going away. But hey, Gurman makes news and gets a freak out on rumor/tech sites and Twitter so mission accomplished.

This is exactly the case. Gurman doesn't know what the **** he's talking about, and this is just for the clicks.

Well, I use AirPods and love them, so removing the 3.5mm jack was a non-issue for me. But as someone who uses an iPhone for long FaceTime calls, and uses an iPhone on long flights (and I see a lot of other people doing the same), I think it'd be extremely inconvenient to have no wired charging port. I also see people every single day walking around with their phones plugged into battery packs.

So I don't have any "data" on it, just like you don't have any data on the opposite case, but if you can name practical advantages to removing a wired charging port I'm all ears, because I only see disadvantages. If the iPhones already have wireless charging, how does removing the wired charging port make them better and more convenient?

Well, the phones already had wireless audio and they still removed the 3.5mm jack, making the phone way less convenient (at least for me). It doesn't seems that convenience or capability are part of Apple's design maxims. It's mostly about maximizing profits.

That's great and all, but how are you going to charge the phone in your car? Or at the airport? This is a design edict disconnected from the real world. Time to leave the glass bubble, Jonny.

Airport / public locations would upgrade with Apple supplied parts! very simple - more money for apple - screw you people.

Not everyone wants an RF device right up next to their heads - whether it be the phone, or some type of wireless earpiece. And I know people don't want to use the speakerphone all the time.

A stupid move.

It's not practical at all when it comes to charging and I see this an added cost for the consumers and the public sector, if they choose to purchase wireless charging equipment. There are situations where I prefer to connect with hardwire over total reliance of WiFi.

Not until wireless charging is standard in new cars and wireless charging stations are at every airport, etc.

I do think this is inevitable, but not until many years from now.

If they replace it with USB-C, I like it! But no connector at all sounds a bit extreme...

Initially I believed Apple would replace the present connector with USB-C, however their vision is of a true wireless future.

AirPower = Charging ones device.
AirPods = Listening to music and answering calls.
Wireless sync with iTunes for backup purposes has existed for a while.

What I hope Apple to offer to conform to their vision is more iCloud standard free storage for idevices back-up and restor, considering the Mac sees no loves theses days.

iPhones and Apple Watch will be dust and waterproof with no ports, the mic and speaker openings to drain any liquid ingress has been addressed by the Apple Watch.

A slab of glass with a stainless steel frame is where the iPhone and Apple Watch design language is heading. The magnetic linking system introduced with the Apple Watch will be introduced in a future iPhone and will be implemented in the AirPower mat.

Exciting times, however I will miss using my lightening wired earphones. Don’t like charging wireless earphones.

The day the remove the charging port is the day I will leave Apple, I could handle the aux port going but a power port removal is a bridge to far from me unless they perfected wireless charging without the pad

They need to fix WiFi sync before they even think about this. It is so hit-and-miss that things actually get synchronized, and I still want to keep my photos on my computer, not iCloud, so a solution to that should be worked out.

You can get Qi charging pads that fit in cars and connect via USB to any vehicle. So this is a nonissue, though not as integrated as one would prefer, this is a transitional phase.

Many new cars come with Qi chargers standard, now the question is standard charging rate or fast charging. I believe the consortium was looking to double the present fast Charging from 15W to 30W super charging option, which will open the door for tablets to be Qi compliant.
