So if you’re travelling (airports and such) instead of just taking a cord with you and a tiny adapter the size of your thumb... you’d have to cart around a gigantic (relatively) and slow wireless charging pad.
I’ve been to airports who offer Qi charging stands now

You can get Qi charging pads that fit in cars and connect via USB to any vehicle. So this is a nonissue, though not as integrated as one would prefer, this is a transitional phase.

Many new cars come with Qi chargers standard, now the question is standard charging rate or fast charging. I believe the consortium was looking to double the present fast Charging from 15W to 30W super charging option, which will open the door for tablets to be Qi compliant.

This doesn't help regarding CarPlay in my 2017 car. Not gonna buy a new car, and can't buy a new stereo for the car. So, I'd just not buy iPhones. I'll say again this "rumor" is just Gurman clickwhoring.

If they replace it with USB-C, I like it! But no connector at all sounds a bit extreme...
Removing the port is the final blow to hacking devices like Graykey.:D They'll sell it as a security feature, No port so no way to access your data via USB. Cheering through out the land. But they still won't implement a firewall feature. We protect our computers with a firewall, we protect our networks with a firewall, but we cannot protect our phones with a firewall.

For better or worse, Apple made a bold statement that expressed commitment to USB-C by eliminating all the data ports on the MacBook Pro and MacBook line and only included USB-C. If Apple leaves the Lightning port instead of replacing it with USB-C on the 2018 iPhone, it will clearly prove how inconsistent, clueless, mediocre, and useless Tim Cook is.

Apple would rather use a proprietary connection that's thinner and they can choose what to do with it on their iOS devices. The calculus is completely different on the Mac side of things, where Thunderbolt 3 ports allow them to condense what once had to be three or four different ports (high speed transfer, USB, power, and video cable) into a single one. Plus, Lightning predates USB-C, and people gave Apple an incredible amount of **** for abandoning a 9ish-year old interface (30pin) for lightning in the first place. You can't demand they retain legacy tech and in the same breath want them to switch the connector on your phone.

But sure, you can keep piling adjectives on the guy who runs the most valuable company in the world. There's inconsistency in Apple's product lineup, but it's not using Lightning on its mobile devices.

Until they decide to copy Apple stupid decisions. Android use to be great now the phones are just as expensive, they are removing headphone jacks (copy Apple) and now have ugly notices (again copy Apple).

Market forces, consumers view Apple as a fashion statement and will pay to be seen as such. Apple sells more of these devices as their have marketed themselves as such, thus charging more than the competition, consumers pay, competition believe that consumers want these features and mimick it.

It’s a vicious cycle and consumers have the power, however most are just sheep.

The iPhone needs physical connectors. We need physical connectors. This would be awful.
However, I would LOVE it if Lightning was replaced with USB-C.

That's great and all, but how are you going to charge the phone in your car? Or at the airport? This is a design edict disconnected from the real world. Time to leave the glass bubble, Jonny.
I have a wireless charger in my car (it’s a magnetic one, the case has metal in specific spots to make sure it’s on correcting every time).

That said, I would hate not having an additional way to charge my phone.

Lastly, this article is BS. I doubt Apple was considering this because of one huge factor that requires it: CarPlay.

for the love of god.. before they consider this.. doing everything wirelessly has to be bug and hassle free
I do not remember iTunes wireless sync to be anything but frustrating
even wired charging has it's benefits. one of them being I can interact with the phone in my hand or .. wait for it.. use it AS A PHONE while it charges. as far as I know this is not possible with wireless charging unless.. ok.. now I get it.. airpods and siri.. great.. scratch everything I said earlier and just improve siri to a point where it is at least useable without wanting to strangle her, realising that she can't be strangled and throwing the phone through the wall

Exactly - it's fussy and not reliable - what I notice is this a related issue when I copy a full CD from my iTunes library to my iPhone and I get the disc but one song from the disc randomly gets separated from the list, almost like it's its own record. And the fields are correct so it should be part of the record. Example Pink Floyd the Division Bell, all the songs show up on the iPhone except for one of the songs so for example the song "Keep Talking" shows up in the music player on the phone as it's own album with just it inside it. Frustrating.

So all our brand new cars that still have wired CarPlay will be obsolete? They sure as hell better provide an adapter for that!
This source is bogus. Apple wasn’t planning this. They wouldn’t nerf CarPlay or fast charging.

This will be the only way for removing the port to work, has to be able to match fast charging that we have or better

I do _Not_ believe Gurman or this article. The lightning port is crucial in the sense of restoring From back up for iTunes and even for Carplay . We are still very much in hard-wired world for charging our devices ,where wireless charging is not a standard, it’s more of an option. Perhaps one day the lightning port might vanish, but with the iPad and AirPods still supporting the lightning port, I doubt the iPhone would have deleted the port with the iPhone X.

As a side note in his report about technical challenges facing the AirPower, expected to be released by September, well-connected reporter Mark Gurman also noted that Apple considered removing wired charging from the iPhone X.

Lightning-iPhone-7.png

From his Bloomberg News story:Just to be absolutely clear, Gurman confirmed to me that this would have included removing the Lightning connector from the device. In fact, his report notes that Apple designers eventually hope to "remove most of the external ports and buttons on the iPhone," although this is likely multiple years away.

A few years ago, it was reported that Apple's design chief Jony Ive's end goal is for the iPhone to resemble a "single sheet of glass," while Apple has repeatedly expressed its ambitions to "create a wireless future," so the eventual removal of the Lightning connector should perhaps come as no surprise.

Apple is already well on its way towards that wireless future, with products and technologies ranging from AirPods and AirPower to its W1 and W2 wireless chips. Apple also made the controversial decision to remove the headphone jack from iPhone 7 models a few years ago, pushing users towards wireless earphones.

Still, removing the Lightning connector would certainly be another controversial decision, given it is not only used for wired charging, but also for audio and data transfer, such as syncing an iPhone with iTunes on a Mac or PC.

Removing the Lightning connector would also prevent an iPhone from directly connecting to a wide range of peripherals, including many adapters, docks, battery cases, power banks, keyboards, game controllers, audio cables, wired headphones, and other accessories authorized under Apple's MFi Program.

In many cases, however, wireless alternatives would be available. It's possible to sync an iPhone with iTunes over Wi-Fi, for example, while wired headphone users can go wireless, Bluetooth-enabled game controllers are available, and upright-positioned wireless chargers can double as a docking station.

Of course, there would be some friction with this transition, just like when Apple switched from its 30-pin dock connector to Lightning in 2012, and removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7. In both of those cases, however, the controversy eventually died down as many users came to accept the new reality.

It's also worth noting that Apple considers a lot of different ideas internally that might never materialize in a public-facing product.

At this point, it appears like the Lightning connector on iPhones should live on for at least a few years. Rumors suggest Apple will bundle a faster 18W charger with a USB-C port with iPhones released in 2018, which would connect to the devices with a Lightning to USB-C cable included in the box.

Just turn the magnetic accessory tab like on the iPad into a charging tab and problem SOLVED.

Waterproof problem SOLVED because no "ports" except for speaker holes

Also extremely CONVENIENT considering you can just slap it on and let the magnet do the rest instead of fiddling with it trying to get it in the hole(I also have this problem with my wife)

Also when is MicroLED coming I want my phone to last longer than 3 years without burn in!

Finally, removing the charging port will create better innovation. It will happen. Wireless charging portable chargers. No one said anything about the apple watch not having a charging port

Not sure how much innovation one can get other than a wireless power bank, mat and stand for charging purposes. If data is allowed through the same process may be limited or have an I device magnetically attach to a Mac for power and data.

Wireless power banks, mats, stands exist today and the only option left with Qi is faster charging or multi device support. Not sure metal objects covering the Qi connectors is feasible and having the charging distance extended maybe a health risk.

This would be too extreme for me. For those of you who think this is the same as removing the headphone adapter, or changing from the 30-pin to the lightning port ... you're wrong. Being able to get a small adapter so you can still use all your accessories is one thing, this would eliminate the use of anything made/owned that doesn't support wireless.

I don't mind using adapters, but making all equipment that requires a physical connection obsolete would be going too far. I also like connecting my phone to iTunes and restoring as new for every major iOS version ... maybe this will be possible wirelessly? Also, what about plugging your phone in the car? There are virtually no wireless CarPlay units out ... maybe there will be within a timeframe in which Apple would remove the lighting port, but you'd still be screwing a lot of people.

In my opinion, the ONLY way Apple removes the lightning port, is if they add a magnetic connector similar to the Essential phone that would allow magnetic adapters, basically, for physical connections. That's the best of both worlds ... it allows Apple to remove the lightning port, while allowing it's users to still use all their legacy devices.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/30/15711194/essential-phone-modular-magnetic-accessory-system

Android creator Andy Rubin is returning to the smartphone business with his new Essential Phone, and one of its signature features is a modular accessory system that Rubin and co promise will "keep your phone cord-free, future-proof, and always up-to-date." Featuring a pair of magnetic pins on the back of the device, this so-called Click cordless connector will hook up to Essential’s 360-degree camera and its Essential Phone Dock (pictured below).

USB-C is not coming. The lightning port will go away soon. All of you whiners need to get over this. It's coming.

I actually hope you're right... at least long term. The 'whiners' do have a point though.

IMO the issue is not what Apple want's to remove (e.g. connection port) but what it will be replaced with. For the headphone connector it was annoying but we had plenty of good choices for bluetooth headphones readily available. For connector ports, there are a lot of uses beyond charging that Apple may or may not address.

I just don't see a move to full wireless being viable yet. Someday? Bring it on!

Wireless CarPlay functionality is underway. It’s unfortunate that your vehicle may not support it, maybe a manufacturer updates the firmware/software to allow it to resolve your concerns in the future.
