Only remove the physical charging cable when the (wireless) alternative is advantageously superior, convenient, accessible, and affordable. In other words…. at least another 3-5 years. Maybe more.

I am all in favour of this. A simpler device with power and long lasting battery life, that is truly wireless.
As long as you're not using your phone while charging right? Most people can't put their phones down for one second let alone wait for it to charge wirelessly and not able to use it at the same time. This doesn't apply to me but just pointing out a fact.

Would be interesting to know what % of current users of capable iPhone users are using wireless charging today and on top of that do only wireless charging. I suspect is it small - particularly only wireless. I could see having a wireless charger on a desk at office to place between uses but not in all the other places that phones get plugged in.
Anyone know what % use wireless?

They would have to implement a recovery mode similar to MacOS. Forced reset boots a recovery partition to handle the wireless restore if it bricks.

Maybe they will add a pinhole reset like many electronics have? :) I do wonder about how well that will work especially as they have less physical buttons (like no home button).

Also a recovery partition takes up space. Apple has finally been releasing phones with decent base level storage. This would be a move in the other direction.

This really shouldn't be surprising to anyone. I've said it many times when the topic of USB-C on the iPhone comes up: We'll sooner see an iPhone with no port than an iPhone with a USB-C port.

The one thing I hope we see before this becomes a reality though is some sort of internet based recovery for restoring iOS devices, similar to how Macs can right now.

That's great and all, but how are you going to charge the phone in your car? Or at the airport? This is a design edict disconnected from the real world. Time to leave the glass bubble, Jonny.

So if you’re travelling (airports and such) instead of just taking a cord with you and a tiny adapter the size of your thumb... you’d have to cart around a gigantic (relatively) and slow wireless charging pad.

By the time this actually happens, Qi chargers (or whatever they're called) will be much more common place.

This is easily solvable with an inductive charging battery pack

Yea, but there's a difference between having a cord running to your inner coat pocket, bag, having a battery pack laying next to you, and having to physically hold a battery pack along with your phone while using it for the inductive charging to work.

Sure there may be some situations where this is functional, but there are other situations where it would be very annoying. For example, I've often plugged my phone into a battery pack in my backpack while walking around NYC or on the subway, I wouldn't want to also be holding a battery pack in these situations.

2-4 GB partition for a recovery iOS isn't that big of a loss, and with no ports or buttons they can go wall to wall with batteries and storage. I'm slightly biased though, my iPhone has the same storage as a base model MacBook. It would impact smaller sizes at a higher level.

How do we know it's a Glass Bubble? Personally, I've always pictured him in a Glass Cube. :apple:

I still want a headphone jack back. These lighting headphones are ****, everyone constantly complains that it sounds like I'm in a tunnel. This was never a thing with my older iPhone and a regular headphone port.

Let's not even discuss the ******** about trying to charge my phone and have it plugged in to the Aux port in my car. Two adapters later and the experience is still hit or miss.

No one bought the iPhone because of the missing headphone jack. They bought it in spite of, and have to deal with it. It's completely stupid. Also, the idea of no charging port on a phone has so many ripple effects... I'm sure Apple will do it at some point, just to annoy their userbase.

What about the Watt-Up wireless charging Apple was working on? Or adding the smart connector like an iPad? Both would assist in removing the port and still allow charging and data transfer.

BMW has wireless CarPlay already. Qi charging is getting faster and faster.

Apple likes to remove or make thinner or smaller, not change to something the same size and capability. They also like to own the technology (ie. Firewire, 30 pin, Lighting, etc.) The only exception being USB-C on the Mac.

I have an iOttie Qi charger in my car, no sweat.

Funny to hear the responses here.

the iPhone X was supposed to be "way" ahead of its time...so the idea of removing something that would be commonplace in the future sounds exactly what they would have/should have done. The iPhone X wasn't for everyone but for those on the bleeding edge of technology.

Basically how far could they push the iPhone (of the future) while still being a usable iPhone for today's users.

As a consumer you always have the freedom to buy a product from a different company
barely. if you're heavily invested in apple ecosystem, there's only really one viable choice.

and android's a privacy/security/design clusterf*ck

I'm still salty about them removing the headphone jack. I have been in situations with iPhone fanboys (iPhone 7 or newer) where they suddenly needed a headphone jack to play music in the car or something, and couldn't. They kind of realized then that it wasn't universally beneficial. Another friend with 7 Plus (who's normally impartial when it comes to this stuff) said about it, "honestly it's stupid". I don't how some people can defend that decision so blindly. Yes, eventually it is going away, but 18 months ago was too early. Not everyone is affected by the change, but it has proven to be more annoying than anything else to me and many others. But I'm okay with it, because I've been a very happy Android user for years, and I'm hoping my next brand new phone will be the last one with a headphone jack before it's phased out.

I'm not in support of this idea really - but you could for instance buy a batter that is a wireless charge pad in it? That way you could charge anywhere at any time without cables at all - and then just charge the battery up when it needs it when you can get to a wall socket or a USB port. Actually seems like it might be a better situation for heavy usage travellers, probably something i'd consider now if I travelled a bit more.

This would definitely keep me from getting a new X. I just bought a new car and that requires a lightening cable for Car Play. And I cannot live without Car Play and Maps. Also, I use the little Square card reader to take credit cards and that won’t work without a plug-in port either. There is a Wireless and Reader (Oh joy, another device to keep charged) but the no Car Play would be a deal breaker.

The second Apple does this is the second I look at an Android phone as my next upgrade. What’s next? They’ll remove the screen so that the only way to interact with the phone is through Siri?

I’d imagine you do the same thing you do now, bring your charger with you. Wireless charging isn't it built into your nightstand, although possible. Not to mention more and more automakers, hotels, airports, coffee shops are adapting wireless chargers and building them right in. The only logical argument is that it’s slower to charge. The rest are mute.
