I think the homepod might be one of the largest apple flops
The price was a flop. The speaker itself sounds amazing, especially in a stereo pair. The way they produce artificial surround sound with Dolby Atoms is insane. They just priced it way too high for what it is. I bought one every time Best Buy had them on sale for $199. That's where it should've been priced right out of the gate.

If Apple does anything it will taking the polishing cloth to the existing Homepods. I've enough of them in my home to last until Siri is fixed or something else better comes along.

Add Z-Wave, control of WiFi outlets and switches, and simple if/then logic programming and you might have something. Otherwise you just have a speaker, which no matter how good is supposedly sounds, can not match the sound of even the cheapest bookshelf speaker.

As I've said before...if the new "OG" HomePod sounds like the incredible speakers in my 2021 16" MBP, I think the sound design improvement will blow us away.

Reading this comment made me trigger so many bad memories with Siri...
Yes, you made me angry for the rest of the week-end.
Ha ha! Siri makes me and my wife angry every day! But when Siri asks my wife 3-4 times a week “Who‘s speaking?”, I have to take the HomePod out of her hands as she almost throws it out the window…she’s an authorized user with all the settings checked and the only female voice in this house of 3. Hey Siri, figure it the F out!!!

As long it’s better sound quality than the original HomePods. Too much base for songs, not enough emphasis on voice for tv.

I like the speakers of my 2021 MacBook Pro more than a stereo pair of HomePods. That says it all.

Last night I’m yelling at my Homepod to turn off the lights without specifying which room, obviously the one it hears me in.

I see the light on top come on to indicate that it heard me then immediately go off.

Then I realize my damn iPhone heard it, and Siri decided to ignore the Homepod and listen to the phone, which is asking me which room I mean.

It’s basic dumb stuff like this Alexa launched with and Apple still doesn’t seem to understand.
I can’t tell you the number of times I will ask my paired OG HomePods in the kitchen to do something and an iPhone or HomePod mini in a room down the hallway around the corner picks it up…uggg

I’d like new HomePods to use as stereo surround with minis as the satellite speakers.
Better yet add a short throw laser tv projector as an option in the big one…

I’ve given up on Apple coming back into home networking and making all of these devices mesh satellites.

... but states it's unlikely to be anything "super-impressive."

Additionally, Apple is working on a device focused on use in the kitchen that combines an iPad and a speaker connected to a robotic arm. Gurman expects at least one of these two Home products to launch towards the end of 2023 or in early 2024.
Apple is so behind in the "smart home devices" business. so unless there is something really impressive - why would they catch any more market share?
At least in the US "modern kitchens" integrate with the family/living room, why do I need a device for a kitchen? doesn't make sense ...
And for a new HomePod, unless it works with an ATV - no for me. please correct me, but it is my understanding that HomePods don't connect to ATV ...

Apple has had many flops, especially when Steve was there, but whether or not you consider the OG HomePod or mini, it's not a flop

No new audio device release makes sense if the new lossless streaming function is not announced at the same time.
It would be pretty bad to release a new generation of products (refreshes to the Airpods Pro and Max are rumoured too) without the technology for better quality streaming.

Given the obvious limitations of bluetooth on iOS, it would be pretty bad to invest in it for an other generation.

I'm saying this because Apple doesn't support anything beyond AAC and they have to think of something if they don't want to be left behind.
HomePods already have the option to stream in lossless since they’re streaming directly from Apple Music, and are usually freed from the constraints of AirPlay.

They better get moving. I get sense Amazon is passing them in this space. We just ordered a 5G cellular Wi-Fi router on the t-mobile test drive program and they threw in an Amazon video pod thing (don’t know name).

I don’t expect apple will give one away in such a deal but Amazon must be pushing hard for domination here if they are fully subsidizing by giving these away.

(Yes I did ask T-M if they had an apple equivalent but no dicey.)

Apple was so behind MEN (Motorola/Ericsson/Nokia in the industry), only having Rokkr at the time to its credit (with a ton of help from Moto) in cellular telecom. And then not long after, iPhone.

I was always interested in HomePod and Siri so I could play my own music on demand (tons of ripped CDs and various downloads) but it's not doable. I want nothing to do with Apple Music, and it just bugs the hell out of me that I can't say "Play Bob Dylan" and have it figure out that I want it to play from my own music collection. Epic fail.

Now that sounds amazing!

Apple has provided the API to do so, it’s now up to third party services like Spotify and Amazon Music to decide to integrate it or not. Only minor music services did it so far unfortunately
Apple can’t force Spotify to do so and Spotify seemingly doesn’t want to incentivize consumers to buy more Apple products.

Another reason is probably also that HomePod is just a tiny fraction of the smart speaker market and doesn’t have a big user base.

So I don’t see this happening unless Apple finds a way for HomePod to get market leading features and have many millions buy them worldwide.

We use our HomePod with Apple iTunes Match, $25 annual subscription which plays all our uploaded music which we ripped from our 💿 years ago. Works very well for us.

except, they are playing catch-up in this space, plenty "smart" speakers out there ...
A lot of things Apple is introducing is compared to the iPhone, that just doesn't work all the time ...

You can definitely hook homepods up to apple tv using eArc (on the latest Apple TV) and use them as a stereo pair. Not sure if you mean physically hook up but they definitely can hook up with an Apple TV.
