Is this the 97th or the 98th time MacRumors has told us the exact same thing: "Mark Gurman says new Macs coming, some in Spring, some with M2".
I mean, seriously, is there any extra content to his newsletter beyond repeating the same (obvious!) rumors EVERY WEEK?

I love how Gurman can squeeze articles and newsletters out of the same rumors over and over again. Tells you something about how thirsty we are for Apple rumors.
He’s writing articles that literally anyone who has read the other rumors from actual sources could write, and getting credit for it as if he’s a source himself.

It’s a joke.

Goodbye Touch Bar
You were underutilized
And therefore criticized
My Touch Bar is overutilized: it's utilized even when I don't touch it!

Sometimes my 2019 MBP 16" touches the Touch Bar for me by itself and turns off the display brightness or the volume without my intervention, it's like a ghost living on my Touch Bar...

It would be so weird to release a high end imac with m1 at same time release a MBA M2…
Ok ilac would be Max x4 or so, but MBA M2 would be way faster in single core…

You learn from your past mistakes. In this case apple’s mistake was trusting vendor architectures. I suspect they will stop trusting vendor ISAs in future as well and will migrate from ARM to something in house.
I'm not sure what the "mistakes" were - Macs made good use of the 68k, the PPC and Intel Core/x86 through the times when they were the best choice, and when they ran out of road, Apple were able to switch horses. They've got switching off to a fine art, and it gets easier each time as more and more of the software base is written in high-level languages and/or uses high-level OS frameworks.

The switch to ARM was only really made possible by the success of the iPhone - that didn't just give Apple the clout to develop their own processor & GPU, but it jump-started the modern smartphone market, which put the whole ARM world on a stronger footing. I think the ARM skeptics were in a bit of denial over how powerful the A-series processors in iPhones and iPads had got (all that face recognition, intelligent photo processing and animoji rubbish takes processing power...).

Maybe there's an alternative universe where Apple switched to ARM, instead of PPC, in the 90s... They were, after all, one of the three partners that founded ARM, although the processor/ISA already existed as the Acorn RISC Machine before that - but the ARM only ended up in the Newton and Apple ended up selling their share of ARM (that's gotta hurt!)

Those early Acorn systems kicked Intel butt, but it was the height of the Wintel monopoly, so if it didin't run Windows/DOS it wasn't going in. By the time Apple got involved they were falling behind on the desktop and concentrating on mobile/embedded applications.

Smart move. Even the base 14” MBP is pretty much a massive upgrade compared to what a equivalent configuration of MBA represents. The M2 might represent a few improvements but it’s not better then a M1 pro derived from all rumors.
Its likely gonna be half the performance of an M1 Pro, but still marginally better than an M1. Apple is in no rush to upgrade most of the line to M2 anyway partly due to the manufacturing cost of the chip itself. The 2021 MBP's are already expensive enough. TSMC wants to recoup some of the cost on developing 3NM. Apple is likely gonna negotiate a good deal, ensure there is enough yields to meet demands (its already tough trying to get one of the new ones).

So, my conclusion is, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple just keeps selling the currently M1 MBP and Air's until March or fall of 2023. The line up is likely gonna be streamlined to get rid of the odd child MBP introduced with M1 in 2020.

- Current MacBook Air design with M2
- Entry level 14 MacBook Pro with 2021 design starting at 1499 replacing the 13 inch M1 MBP
- $1,999 model
- $2,499 model

Its really that simple.

I have 2 16s and never had that happen. You may be accidentally touching it while typing.

No. It happens when my hands are far way from the keyboard. And the virtual button being touched by the ghost is highlighted and stays hightlighed for more than 1 minute and there's nothing I can do to make the ghost release the virtual button being touched.

intel mac mini is often used in servers. they might actually have a useful for some people.
They do indeed - recording studios, musicians, and audio pros, who have lots of other things to spend money on like preamps, mics, etc., so need the most bang for the buck in a computer. Already have lots of monitors so don’t need an iMac, which for most studios would need to be VESA mounted. Don’t need portability, for the main kit anyhow. And for all but big budget cinema soundtrack work, don’t need the horsepower or expense of a Mac Pro. So I’m really hoping for a mini pro. I don’t care if it’s bondi blue or space gray, it’s never in sight anyhow.

The M1 13" MBP at least has a fan compared to relying completely on convection cooling. If the M2 has like 15% CPU and 50% more GPU it will likely need at least one fan because a increase in performance never mind the A16/M2 SoC architecture energy savings. The 13" MBP also has a 500 nit display, the 13" MBA a 400 nit display.
Difference of batteries

13" Air = 49.9 Wh, 4380 mAh Lithium-Ion, Battery runtime (according to manufacturer): 15 h
13" MBP = 58.2 Wh Lithium-Ion

The scant differences in the thickness dimensions between the two is certainly a basis for one design to disappear but the M2 could dictate only one path, but it won't be called a MBP anymore as you speculate. :)

Now THIS will not happen. For sure.

I wouldn’t be so sure they don’t keep around an intel version for longer than we might think.

Might be in parallel to an ASi version for a time

The Mac Pro product gets used in situations and by clientele that can be quite a bit different and more niche than most all other Apple products. It’s a hard one to predict

When the events are just videos (vs. in-person things they invite press to), is there a reason it *couldn't* be just a couple products? I want new Macs released too but this rumour isn't as crazy as it would have been back in normal times.

Entry level MBP should not exist. Pro should mean Pro. The only entry level Mac portables should be MBA and MBA should get SD Card and MagSafe. Mac portables vs Pro Mac portables should be differentiated by double the number of USB-C ports, support for additional external monitors, computer thickness, much greater power + fans (to justify fans), high refresh displays and larger speakers, purely because you can fit a larger speaker in a bigger chassis. MBA should take an obvious performance hit over all Pro machines, so MBA are fast and MBP are exceedingly fast. Port variety should not take a hit, but USB-C port count should. This makes MBA a great machine with extra portability and MBP a truly amazing machine at higher prices and with some additional expandability and heft—for certain kinds of professionals who need all the power and expandability a Pro portable Mac deserves.
If it’s not PRO ENOUGH for you, nobody else can have it.

Apple needs to bring back grid computing (Xgrid) as a core feature of macOS. Talk about a perfect opportunity to get insane performance from the massive number of Apple devices and high-bandwidth networks that we now have.

Imagine a bank of Mac minis that automatically join the grid when connected to the same network, zero configuration needed. Or a graphics design department where everyone's computers are crunching computations for everyone else in the room.

Pro should mean pro!!? And what exactly does pro mean? Are we talking pro video editor, pro musician, pro vlogger, pro coder, pro creative writer, etc, etc. There will be pro’s of all variety using Apple laptops and desktop, and probably just as many people buying the ‘pro’ kit that don’t predominantly use their machines for work related tasks.

Apple needs to cater for many different users, pro and not pro. I’ve never known Apple to only offer one ‘pro’ machine. Get rid of the 13 inch and then the 14 inch becomes the ‘entry level’ machine!

My profession is coding, and for me the 13 inch with M1 is currently the best option for me. So there you go, a ‘pro’ who wants to keep the 13 inch MacBook Pro. And yes, I love the touchbar, especially when using the Xcode debugger!
Well, Pro coder and Creative Writer laptops would have a screen rotated to portrait instead of landscape. I do not think we will being seeing those anytime soon. Pro social media influencer would be square.

So obviously, pro only means video editor, musician, or animator. A Pro gamer laptop would be interesting.

I hope you're right... Apple's been dragging out the drama for this Imac Pro (or whatever it's called)... If it does come out, there better be a silver or space grey option... I have NO Interest in buying an orange computer with white bezels. ?????
Drama? They promised a two-year cycle to refresh the macs with new silicon. They are well within their time budget

Professional gaming is like Army Intelligence. Sure it exists, but it’s definitely a contradiction in terms

Just a reminder considering the origins of Apple usage of "Pro".

The term pro was just a naming convention change from the time of PPC. They used to be called PowerBook and PowerMac. When Intel models returned they renamed the models to be MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. It's not like they were meant for power users later pro's.

Its just a naming convention to symbolize that they are capable, not exclusive to a particular usage. But lately we gotten it into our heads that more pricy Apple computers are only meant for Pro's like your comment. They can be for anyone that wants one. Its also means that this naming a 27" iMac successor as a iMac Pro is meaningless and means nothing.

It's 2022. How are we still using Gurman as a source of the rumor mill? He's been more incorrect than correct over the past 3 years. Not a fan.
