But none of the devices you mentioned had a price tag of only $4999 :)
The iPad basically was a big iPhone when it was released. It became more lucrative as it gained functionality with further updates and iterations. It didn’t cost $3000 though. And people already used phones that had similar touch and mobile OS functionality. There’s no existing adoption of goggles.

The price tag is not much different from when the first Macintosh launched. It's almost like Apple can afford to flop with their other existing product lines carrying the weight. Even though these reports are assumptions, guesstimates, coming from everyone else besides Apple... it's just convenient for this forum to gloss over the part where even Apple doesn't expect this device to be a hit initially, just for the "AHAH Tim wrong, I right" when those sales figures are reported. Absolutely no one thinks this is going to be an iPhone sized hit out of the park and the optics has always been for the long run.

It makes sense for them to unveil their most advanced tech for PR. Anyone expecting them to launch a cheap lukewarm competitor to an Oculus first is mistaken.

LMAO, you're really going to compare this with the Mac Pro? really?
yes, the MacPro is a very expensive, very niche, top-of-the-line, very low volume product with a small but dedicated fanbass, not sure why they can’t have an equivalent in the mobile space.
Especially since one of the rumored features is literally the fact that this can add more virtual displays to your Mac. I’m sure there are plenty of “pros” who will find that very useful.
Might even use this new headset alongside their Mac Pro, who knows

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but all I've been saying is that it's not going to be a hit. I didn't say "Apple is doomed" or that this will never ever be a hit in 20 years. But when rumors are saying there's going to be an "iPhone moment" or comparisons are constantly made between these goggles and the iPod, then yeah, I'm going to call BS on that for numerous reasons. In the end, I'm just guessing as much as anyone else. I could be wrong; these goggles could be the next iPhone and Apple will discontinue numerous product lines as AR/VR replaces the need for laptops or tablets or phones. We'll see.

Like the cred you have when you pretended to be an architect and then got owned and then said you were an industrial engineer and then got owned again.

What?

Where did I claim to be an architect? Or an industrial engineer?

Be specific.

Apple's biggest issue in the short term, even if the product is best of class. Is how to deal with lazy reporters that upon seeing sales numbers < the iPhone, will immediately fire up the echo chamber and start the "fail" "apple is doomed" mantra.

Long term there is something huge to AR IMO.

Can apple hold on until we get there in the face of possible headwinds like this?

Think Different.

I'm long on Apple VR.

Almost wrote Apple RV there which I would not be long on.

Apple still plans to announce its long-rumored AR/VR headset during the WWDC 2023 keynote on June 5, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his Sunday newsletter, Gurman said Apple will also unveil the headset's xrOS operating system.

"The showcase at WWDC, the Worldwide Developers Conference, will likely include the headset itself, but also its onboard xrOS operating system, accompanying services, and — perhaps most critically — a software development kit and platform that will let developers write new types of apps," wrote Gurman, in his weekly "Power On" newsletter.

Last week, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said mass production of the headset was pushed back by an additional one to two months to the mid-to-late third quarter of 2023. Kuo said the delay added "uncertainty" to whether the headset would be announced at WWDC this year, but Gurman is still confident the device will be unveiled then.

Apple CEO Tim Cook alluded to the headset in a recent interview, saying that AR could "greatly enhance people's communication" and "connection."

Apple announced that WWDC 2023 will take place from June 5 through June 9, with sessions, labs, and other content to be made available online for free. There will also be an in-person component in the form of a "special day" at Apple Park, where randomly selected developers and students can watch the keynote and State of the Union videos together, meet teams at Apple, take part in evening activities, and more.

WWDC they will talk about the xrOS and the fantasy list of future features so they can show we are doing something. Then for the headset it self they be like the my favorite old movie "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" when will get there... REAL SOON!!! and walk away.

The way Apple has been going on the headset the thing is going to be so anticlimactic when it finally comes out especially if it is $3000-$4000.

Reflecting back when the rumors started the $3000 price must have been someone's guess in the dark. I know everyone repeats it, but it's still a rumor.

Frankly I don't understand why that rumor stuck, or is still being repeated. It was never credible, yet every single person thinks that's what its going to cost. Apparently they learned nothing from iPad.

This will most likely come in around $999. And it won't make any difference either.

People said this about the AirPods, Apple Watch, iPad, iPhone, iPod… (for real, go search the MR archives)

You’d think after Apple’s numerous successes that people would stop preemptively declaring products DOA or “flops”, yet here we are once again.
Are you conveniently leaving out apple numerous flops? The console I can’t even remember the name of, the musical social media I also forgot the name about, the original HomePod, that other speaker it released previously and that had a similar fate, the trash can Mac Pro, the mac cube, newton…

As things stand it is far more likely this at/vr nonsense will go down in history as another flop than as a big success. Everything can happen but I will be extremely surprised if this thing actually works out well for apple.

I want them to announce it soon so we don’t have to see that mock-up image anymore.
I suspect whenever this thing is announced you will wish the mock-up was real: as ridiculous as it looks the real thing will be heavier and bulkier than that mock-up suggests.

Thats still speculation, just as I am going to do the same. :D

Apple wouldn't sell something that is going to be physically taxing to wear. People got tired of 3D glasses fast enough. Instead I think Apple would be after something remarkable to use, not the same old stuff currently be peddled by competitors.

My point is that people claim EVERYTHING from Apple is going to flop before it releases- before it’s even announced. We’ve seen these exact comments almost word-for-word on articles about successful products before they launched.

Whether it actually does flop or it’s a huge success, people love to to say every new thing from Apple is “DOA” rather than just taking a level-headed approach and waiting and seeing.

At the very least, wait until the thing is actually unveiled before declaring it a failure. We know literally nothing about this thing other than a supposed leaked ribbon cable and that’s enough for people to confidently declare “DOA”.

I'll buy one if it's leaps and bounds better than anything else that exists right now and does mixed reality well. If it's just on par with the other headsets, but with Apple's OS and it costs $3k, then I don't see myself or many others getting one.

VR is already dead. not even apple can you do something about it the metaverse is ******** like 3d tvs, there are no killer apps, it's not fun even worse if it costs more than an iphone or like an iphone . if it reaches the sale, it finally fails and they start inventing something more interesting
Good thing their focus is AR then…

That’s your opinion, plenty of comments on the original iPhone introduction of people saying it’s “not practical” and they’d “rather just use a Mac”.
People said the iPad wasn’t practical, “it’s just a big iPhone, what’s the point in that?”
In the original Apple Watch… Those comments were brutal. Same with the AirPods. People just tearing them apart.

THE APPLE HEADSET ISNT A PRODUCT MADE FOR CONSUMERS. IT IS MADE FOR DEVELOPERS.

THE MAC, IPOD, IPHONE, IPAD YOUR GRANDMA COULD BUY AND USE.

Will Apple release a 3k headsets for developers in June and a 600 dollar glasses for consumers in September?

No?

Then please stop comparing every product Apple has ever released with this headset.

How do you know all this? Have Apple released it yet with the price announced?

Nope.

So don't preach like you know facts. Thank you.

AR is where it’s at. Who wants to be closed off from their surroundings? VR is a singular non essential entertainment device. You can’t really build a product that goes in deep demand that Apple is accustomed to with that kind of product.

This won’t be announced and all you internet fan boys who want it will be disappointed, also those quotes are not from a recent interview they are from an interview Tim done in 2018 at the university in hour of steve jobs. Time cooks recent interviews in march have not mentioned AR

And if somehow they manage it all you saying you want it will be the first ones to moan about the price

I've been a consumer of VR headsets since I purchased the Oculus developer kit back around 2012. I now think headsets are the wrong approach to immersive content. Glasses-free 3D displays are the future. Being shut off from your surroundings is just not the way to go. Better would be a curved display with stereoscopic imaging. The technology is not there yet, but Looking Glass and other developers have made great strides in recent years.
