I bought a MacBook Air M2 and thought about upgrading to M4 hoping to play some games but Apple is so behind that even with 100% GPU increase, it is still slow.

Recently I found you can buy a powerful desktop for less than $1k and use it to stream the games to your Mac, iPhone, Tablet, etc. You just need a good internet or wifi connection. It's great because your laptop will run all the latest games without using a lot of CPU or battery.
You can keep the Windows desktop in one room, install all the games and play it elsewhere. And it doesn't have to be necessarily for games. Computing-intensive apps like CAD or 3D modeling.

The software used is Moonlight Streaming (NVIDIA open source) or Parsec.

If you don't want to buy a desktop, you can get Nvidia GeForce NOW subscription or (if more technical) use AWS or Azure computers and pay by the hour (useful if you don't play much)

all game streaming will blur the texture when character is moving, it drives me crazy, a definite no go until tech catches up. Guess it’s ok for slow strategy games like civ

a m4 pro or max will be just fine for native games and most window converted games via translation layer. Complaining a base m chip isn’t good enough for gaming is like whining an intel integrated gfx chip can’t run modern games.….

there is no “powerful” desktop for under 1k, you are daydreaming. Rtx 3070 ti to 3080 starts at 2k and goes up, that’s a mid range gaming rig. 4090 starts at $3k

Does this mean we’ll finally get a USB C version of the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad? 🤞

I still need a mix of Lightning and USB cables because of those and a few other accessories.

I do hope so. I'm going to skip the MacMini and MacBook pro upgrades. (current versions are good enough for me) And I might get the iPad Mini. But I will definately buy an upgraded mouse and keyboard. I do hope they'll fix the charging port issue on the mouse. But I doubt that.

Mini 7 right outside the back tonschool window, great 😫

I hope that they release new usbc keyboards and mice/trackpads to accompany the new macs. I might get a set of those…

If you assume Tuesday announcement, Monday software release friday hardware release. Apple has said October Apple Intelligence. Than either invites for the events will be on short notice or it must be 23rd announcement, 28th software, 1st hardware. This isn’t deep insider knowledge, it’s process of elimination.

Small ITX for $999 with RTX 4060:

This one with RTX 4060 ti was $999 two weeks ago ($1350 now):

I tried GeForce NOW with my MacBook Air M2 and it was great (1080p gameplay) with my 5ms latency connection. Using a RTX 4060 in another room might be even better.

We can argue that you can just use the desktop but it is nice having the power of a desktop in a MacBook with passive cooling (Air). That was my point.

Are we going to see Face ID finally? I'm holding off until they utilize that nasty looking huge notch space for something more than a webcam.

I was toying with an M2 16/512 Mac Mini earlier in the year but held off. Looks like I'll be getting the M4 eventually.... I'll probably wait until after Christmas.

Well if Apple's little pet leaker is right and new Mac Studio not until mid 2025 I glad I said screw it and bought a M2 Max Mac Studio a few months ago. For doing audio and non-graphics heavy work its a speed demon. A 32" iMac would be interesting, but that sounds like it will be way off into the future.

He didn’t leak anything. He used a formula for an event cycle and a statement to come to a guess. If Apple released invites tomorrow for the 15th I wouldn’t be surprised. Gurman’s track record isn’t great when he’s not just repeating what others have reported

M4 is N3E, which is fine. That was the point I was making. M3 on N3B is the hated kid in the family.
I’d argue that while the M4 is the more mature version of the fab, the rumors of the N3X or even N2 make it seem like these may be the biggest jump yet in performance and PPW.

It’s not about performance but cost, and the fact TSMC doesn’t want to make chips on N3B.

Apple will announce several new M4 Mac models around the end of October, with the company planning to launch at least some of them as soon as Friday, November 1, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said that Apple will launch a new M4 version of its low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro, as well as higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.

Desktop Macs are not being left out of the refresh, either. Gurman reports that Apple is planning to unveil a redesigned Mac mini with both M4 and M4 Pro chip options. Additionally, the iMac is set to receive an update, with Apple's all-in-one desktop finally transitioning to the M4 chip.

A refreshed iPad mini is also reportedly on the horizon, with a potential release date in early November. This would mark the first update to Apple's smallest tablet since its redesign in 2021.

Looking further ahead, Gurman outlined Apple's hardware plans for the first half of 2025. The company is expected to introduce M4-powered 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models, a new iPhone SE with Apple Intelligence, updated 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models with accompanying new Magic Keyboards, and a refreshed AirTag.

Mac power users may need to wait a bit longer for high-end desktop updates. While new Mac Studio and Mac Pro models with M4 chips are in development, Gurman says they are slated for later releases. The Mac Studio is anticipated around mid-2025, with the Mac Pro following towards the end of the year.

I've heard conflicting reports on whether there will be an M4 iMac. Any further news?
