I can’t wait to get my m4 iMac. What color should I get?
If you already have an iMac, I would suggest choosing a different color to avoid that "same old same old" feeling. My M1 was silver, my M3 is pink, and my M4 will be orange if it's still available. Same thing with other product lines.

When Apple releases new versions of MacBook, both the Air and Pro receive the latest chip available (in this case, M4). However, when new versions of iPad come out, the Pro gets the latest chip but not the Air: in fact, this year, the Air got a chip two generations behind (M2 vs M4 for the Pro). I'm not sure about the reason for such a different strategy between the two product lines. If I were Apple, I think I would favour something in between: a one-generation gap between Air and Pro, with both being released at the same time.
M3 is N3B, which is TSMC's bastard child process node. For even just this reason alone, I'm not surprised Apple didn't put the M3 in the iPad Air. The iMac and Mac mini didn't get M3 either, BTW.

So Apple expects us to pay full price for a Mac Studio, which is lagging two whole generations behind the MacBook Pro and Mac Mini lineup, for 8-9 months or more?
Yes. And they think we're going to love it.

Anyway 8-9 months isn't bad for Apple's timeline. Recall when i.e. previous Mac Pro iterations were kept on the market for years past their prime.

In the market for Mac Mini M4 with at least 18GB RAM because some software already exceed 16GB due to compatibility layer overhead and user upgradable storage for around $700 to toy around with and run benchmarks.

OLEDs on laptops concern me. There’s far more static content on a desktop OS, vs a phone, tablet or TV, and people tend to leave a screen on the same thing for longer.

for something intended to last 5-8 years, I wouldn’t want to baby the screen through fear of burn in
So there would be a reason to bring back AfterDark and the Flying Toasters!
There are worse things.

It could be a much larger performance increase for Lightroom users. In March, Lightroom switched to using the Neural Engine for Denoise instead of using the GPU.

We will see how much of an improvement after some people have it for testing. My guess is 50%+ improvement for Denoise which currently takes 30s per image depending on the size.

This could drive some upgrades for those using Lightroom for photo editing.
This isn't actually correct. The LR upgrade enabled ANE use but it did not replace the use of the GPU their AI-enabled tasks. I've done extensive testing on a range of M1 through M3 models and on models with the higher number of GPU cores, the performance is probably at least 90% attributable to the GPU. It's only on the base models of AS with relatively low GPU counts (or in the M1 and M2, an older GPU architecture) where the update really improved performance. While the updated ANE's performance will help, I doubt it will increase more than 10-15%. On the higher-end Pro and Max models any GPU updates in both core count and overall performance will do a lot more to boost the AI-accelerated tasks in LR.

It seems like the Studio is really getting long in the tooth with the M2. It seems crazy they won't have an update there until mid-2025. The M release schedule still seems really chaotic, compared to A series yearly updates.

Anyways, the new Mac mini Pro will probably be a day 1 purchase for me if there is no new Studio.

Is there any indication that it effects M3 iMac? All of the discussions I've seen specifically mention M1 iMac. Perhaps it has already been fixed?

I first heard of this just a few days ago and wonder how long it took until this started to appear. I have an M3 too.

Already had "Flexgate" on my 2017" 15" MBP and the replacement program only was for the 13".

I've been waiting for a new Mac Studio for so long, that I really, really hope he's wrong this time.
So agree. Got an M1 Max MBP and looking to upgrade to M4. Would love to price up an M4 Studio alongside a MBP and make a more considered decision i.e. maybe sacrifice the screen/portability for an ultra. My biggest problem is my need for instant gratification so I’d probably just get the MBP even if it’s not strictly speaking the best choice. 😂 It really annoys me when Apple continues to sell expensive computers that are effectively out of date. Don’t really want to cough up £4-£5K on something that has a slower clock speed than my iPad.

Giving the iPad Pro a higher-end SoC isn’t feasible for heat reasons, so they differentiate the Air by generation instead.

I am buying an M4 Mac Mini on release day if they have a 16/512 config available in retail.
I am still curious about this new “as small as AppleTV box” in terms of what they will be able to get out of it spec wise. If it is really that small I would have concerns about heat. If it is closer to the mockups (ie smaller that Mac Studio) it will depend on the performance rates to me. I use mine as a 24/7 media server so heat will be an issue if it really is that small but I don’t see Apple suddenly deciding to get into the Micro/Raspberry Pi form factor.

They said the new Mac mini may resemble and approach the size of Apple TV, but that it would also be taller than the current Mac mini. Overall that would make it larger than an Apple TV. But even if they make it that small, they could stick a fan in it. Also, regardless if it has a fan or not, if it retains the aluminum shell, they could have better thermal dissipation than a polycarbonate Apple TV shell if the Mac mini's heatsink is thermally coupled to the aluminum shell (like they did with the iPad Pro).

On a kitted out M3 max here and I’d still happily take some more zippiness in Photoshop. Everything else runs great. A studio display with promotion would probably make things feel smoother and more responsive actually. I notice the difference going between the built in display and my studio display.

Got my M2 MacBook pro 512/16GB at probably the best price of the yr at Canada Costco few months ago.
Please I have to be strong and not try to upgrade
You should hold off for Thunderbolt 5 and the N2 (or N3X), at very least. Probably won’t be worth upgrading for you until 2026.

Yeah, but are you expecting the N2 or N3X anytime soon? Seems like April, at the earliest.

Considering what Apple charges for RAM and SSD upgrades, if you get a BTO iMac, see if they start offering gold in the M4 iMac. If it feels like you paid for it...

M4 is N3E, which is fine. That was the point I was making. M3 on N3B is the hated kid in the family.
