I’m interested in a new Apple Watch, especially if there are battery improvements. My 4’s battery only lasts 12 hours on a good day (and takes 2 - 3 hours to fully charge) so it’s quickly becoming a bother to use. This is with few apps installed, raise to wake turned off, most background app refresh turned off, 30 minutes of exercise each day, and no use for messaging or email or phone calls.
sounds like you have a problem. I have the series 2, and while slow, i can still get a day and a half out of the battery.

Impossible.
My AS4 lasts two full days, I bought it on launch day and have used it every single day since than with about 5-6 workouts a week, phone calls, GPS, occasional LTE.

My AW S3, which I’ve had since launch, still lasts over 2 full days and nights. It would probably last 3 days (but not a 3rd night) if I put it on the charger once for 15-20 minutes during one of my showers.

Did AW battery life get progressively worse after each iteration?

Hm I bought my 44mm AW4 in October '18 and it certainly doesn't go for two full days, especially if I throw in a swimming workout. I only charge it overnight and it doesn't leave my wrist during the day.

I was eager to see what they did with AW6 in terms of battery, fast charging, and any industrial design refreshes that would be welcome after 2 whole years.

I also wanted to upgrade my aluminium model to a stainless steel one, because the latter's sapphire screen is allegedly not prone to all these little nicks and scratches that betray my AW4's age.

We'll see what's in store.

Ahead of Apple's "Time Flies" virtual event on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, well-connected Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has been sharing some last-minute thoughts via Twitter on the new product announcements that he expects to see later today, with a particular emphasis on new Apple Watch models.

Apple-Watch-Apple-Event-Keyword-Feature-1.jpg

Gurman has already said his broad expectations for Tuesday's event are a focus on a new Apple Watch Series 6 and iPad Air, with Apple likely to introduce its rumored iPhone 12 at a later event in October.

As for Apple Watch, Gurman has tempered expectations for the Apple Watch Series 6, saying that he "wouldn't look for a ton new" besides blood oxygen monitoring and a faster processor. We already know sleep tracking will be included in watchOS 7, but whether that will be twinned with better battery life or a fast-charge capability is still speculation at this point.

Moving on, Gurman personally believes a new lower-end Apple Watch model also rumored to be announced today will be called "Apple Watch SE," which is the same branding that proven leaker Evan Blass used in his latest tweet about what to expect from Apple at the upcoming event.

Both the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE are expected to come in the same 40mm and 44mm sizes, with the SE model said to be the same as the current Series 5 in terms of design and internal specifications, according to Gurman. Blass predicts both models will also come in both LTE and Wi-Fi versions.

As for the new iPad Air model expected to be introduced, Gurman says it features a similar all-screen design as the iPad Pro but will lack the ProMotion display and won't feature Apple's latest A-series processor.

For his part, Blass reckons the forth-generation iPad Air will have an A14 processor and USB-C connectivity, but he also predicts Apple will unveil an eighth-generation iPad with an A12X chip and a Lightning port.

Lastly, Gurman reiterates his expectation for Apple One service bundles to be announced on Tuesday, along with a new Apple fitness service, but a new Apple TV model remains delayed. Gurman has not mentioned any specific announcement date for Apple's rumored Tile-like AirTags accessory, unlike hit-and-miss leaker Jon Prosser, who believes an announcement is "likely" to come on Tuesday.

The release of new iPads and Apple Watch models corresponds with the rollout of iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and watchOS 7 software updates, which are expected to have their official public release this month.

That’s mature

Agreed - no way the Air has an A14 chip unless they are planning something odd like putting an A14X in the iPhones and A14Z in the iPads. Not sure about the A12X in the regular iPad - this would put it ahead (in GPU at least) of an A13 chip which is more likely for the Air. I think the air will either get an A12X/Z or an A13 (up from an A12) with the iPad getting an A12 (up from an A10).

Not sure why Apple would leave the iPad on Lightning...

You have to remember that the Air and the regular Ipad used to have the X series cpu. It would be pretty cheap from Apple to downgrade even more in sense of cpu.

I don't even get why this is news. Apple always does this. They take one of the older models and make it a less expensive version of the watch. Currently its the Series 3. Why these "leakers" think this is reporting anything noteworthy is beyond me. Apple will most likely say the Series 4 watch with no AOD is now the less expensive Apple Watch.

These guys are getting seriously desperate with this type of news.

Dang. Bought my Apple Watch 4 on day one. Use it every day and sleep with it On every night. Battery only needs time on the charger when I’m in the shower after a morning workout and in the evening before going to bed to be 100% and lasts all day. Probably on the charger an hour a day. LTE version.

There is no way the 8th gen iPad gets an A12X, that would make it similar performance to the A14. The 8th gen iPad will probably get the A12.

I can totally see the Air getting the A14 though.

maximizing profit and a product at every price point is just too much..
Personally the SE sounds fairly interesting. Here in Australia the ECG functions are still not enabled on the Apple Watch, so if we're getting a very similar model with some health sensors missing that might make a lot of sense in the many markets like mine where those features aren't even supported. I'll be considering it depending what the tradeoffs are.

The other announcement must surely be iOS 14's release date given iPhone requires it to support WatchOS 7.

My spouse's 4 has a battery that lasts a long time (it could probably go 2 days even with 30 - 60 minute exercises each day). My watch is a replacement from Apple (glass over heart rate sensor cracked on my previous one without ever being dropped -- I have no idea how it happened). That one had great battery life. The replacement's battery never lasted quite as long but still got 18 hours. It wasn't really bad until the past month.

I'm waiting until watchOS 7 to get a reading of battery health. If it's below 80%, I'll get it replaced.

In the meantime, I charge my watch often.

My AW S4 barely lasts a day before needing to be charged, compared to how I used to get almost two full days on my S3.

It‘s quite noticeable because forgetting to charge my S3 for a night wasn’t a big deal but now I’m screwed if I forget to put the S4 on a charger.

But Apple has so far only used the SE name when it puts newer chips into older hardware (shells), eg, putting the A9 from the iPhone 6s into the shell of an iPhone 5(s). With the Watch, Apple has done something similar with the Apple Watch Series 1 (which put the S2 from the Watch Series 2 into the shell of the original Apple Watch, which was later dubbed by the community the Series 0).

Apple could put the S6 expected to be in the Apple Watch Series 6 into the Watch 5 case but then we hardly know what the Apple Watch 6 case really differentiates itself from the Series 5 beyond possibly a better oxygen sensor. Meaning there would be almost no difference between this Series 5 + S6 and the Series 6.

Though, thinking about it, they could pull an iPhone 5c maneuver. Putting the Series 5 innards (incl. screen) into non-metal case.

Wait.
Lower spec in a series 5 shell?
Putting in the S4 (which is basically identical to the S5)?

no way aw 5 becomes the se version. First of all, it can't be as cheap as current series 3 is. And even if it is between the current series 5 and series 3 price, a lot of people will end up buying that, cannibalizing the series 6 - especially if the only add on it has is a blood oxygen monitor.

Apple does have a tendency to under promise and over deliver at these events, but on paper this seems very lack luster and easily could have been done as a press release.

Agreed, Apple does seem to do the business and marketing thing better than most of their competitors. I can’t imagine they actually think this would be viewed as anything other than an underwhelming event unless they have something additional going on, which is what I tend to believe.
