"He did not share any additional details, or a timeframe for the monitors launching"
really? while I'm looking into replacing my 27 iMac and M1 MBA with a MBP with Studio display, this "news" is, well, interesting ...I am sure Apple I working on a lot of things, like new iPhone, iPad, watch and then the long rumored car, headset ...
But it sure would be nice to get some more monitor options from Apple

Im wondering if the Silicon in the displays can one day be used to offload some of the work off the CPU/GPU in AS Macs.
That's in the Gurman's newsletter as well. Not sure why it's not in the Macrumors article.
My guess is Apple will release two new Pro Display XDR models in 2023.

The first will be a replacement for the current one, staying at 32" by moving to 7K resolution per rumors that 9to5Mac dropped in March 2022.

The second will be 27" and 5K and will end up being the ProMotion Mini-LED display Ross Young has been talking about the past year (and Ming Chi Kuo first outed in early 2021).
Are you thinking that the 7k 32" won't have ProMotion?

‪Apple will make their monitors even worse by using pulse-width modulation (PWM, aka flickering) like they do in their phones and newer laptops. Then they’ll charge $1,000 more for the privilege.

I'll watch the 27" mini-led with great curiosity, but it'll be outrageously expensive.
Anyway 5k at 27" is too small of a UI for my bad eyes

Sounds like they are planning a three display lineup. Too bad the Studio Display doesn't have the Mini LED dimming zones. I really hoped they would do an affordable display with at least MacBook Pro quality and am not willing to pay 1.5K for the old iMac panel.

If they label it a Pro Display XDR, that would set it apart from the Apple Studio Display as a higher-end model.

Also, speculation is that this display will be at least $1000 more expensive than the Apple Studio Display so it would be aimed at a different market segment and Apple's expectation is that people would not generally cross-shop the two displays.
People dont believe 5k 120hz is technicially possible.

5k 120hz mini-led panel should support HDR like the Macbook Pro, but it would replace the position of current Display XDR. If the new XDR monitor is 32 7K that would be over-priced comparing to the ASD Pro.

Wait, the miniLED displays in the new MacBooks use PWM? I've never noticed or been able to capture it in slo-mo on iPhone footage.

In his newsletter today, Gurman said the new monitors will be powered by Apple silicon, just like the Studio Display has an A13 Bionic chip. He did not share any additional details, or a timeframe for the monitors launching,
Apple badly needs to expand their external displays given the types of displays available. (HDR capable Mini LED, OLED) They also need to make a more affordable LED adaption of the current 27” studio display with a better FaceTime camera. I don’t think center stage functionality is necessary to reduce cost.

on technical side, 5k@120hz is possible now, but since we are talking about the pro XDR display, we are talking about at least 6k@120hz
Now that Apple is bringing their own SoC into the displays they can bring if they want 120hz at 6k with their own chip to drive the display and their own custom timing controller

The next model will have a Touch Bar double chin and will only do 8k if you buy the Apple USB cable

I would really love to see a new XDR. After experimenting with various non-apple monitors, I'm pretty much convinced. May even get the old XDR, once they price on it drops.

The 9to5Mac article did not mention anything specific, but subsequent reports presume it will have Mini-LED and ProMotion. There is also some confusion if it will be 36" and offering the same 218 PPI as the current Pro Display XDR or would stay at 32" and offering a higher 245 PPI (similar to the 254 PPI of the MacBook Pro 14" and 16" screen).

I have read claims that it can be done over TB4 with DisplayStreamCompression (DSC) at 8-bit color.

Personally, I think Apple is not trying to chase display marketshare. I believe we got the Studio Display because Apple has decided that the Mac Studio is the formal replacement for the iMac 5K and therefore needed to offer an external version of the iMac 5K's display to be paired with a Mac Studio.

And as much as the forum laughs at the $5000+ price of the Pro Display XDR, it seems to have sold enough units to justify a new model. And if they offer a smaller (27" @ 5K) model at a lower price (~$3000), that might prove even more popular.

What I fault Apple with is trying to pitch the 27" studio display as necessary for someone that has a 2021 14"/16" MBP, or the recent 2020/2022 MBA's which already has FaceTime camera, speakers. The same is true for iPad Pro usages with an external display. The display duplicates what you already have with these products. I recognize most displays have built in camera/speakers but its doesn't need to be sophisticated using a A13 for example.
