on technical side, 5k@120hz is possible now, but since we are talking about the pro XDR display, we are talking about at least 6k@120hz
Now that Apple is bringing their own SoC into the displays they can bring if they want 120hz at 6k with their own chip to drive the display and their own custom timing controller
6k 120hz? Is it possible now? I believe the 5K 120hz is reaching the maximum we can have.

Make a 5K 27" with an adjustable hight and orientation stand with the option for the user to swap to a VESA mount themselves, like every other monitor on the planet, priced at around $1200 and it will be a winner.

What annoys me most about the current studio monitor is that on top of the high price, it's $400 extra for the height adjustable option, which is really a necessity, it doesn't rotate, it's $100 extra for a VESA mount and you can't swap them yourself on the fly. Total gouging on Apple's part and very limiting for the user.

The 9to5Mac article did not mention anything specific, but subsequent reports presume it will have Mini-LED and ProMotion. There is also some confusion if it will be 36" and offering the same 218 PPI as the current Pro Display XDR or would stay at 32" and offering a higher 245 PPI (similar to the 254 PPI of the MacBook Pro 14" and 16" screen).

I have read claims that it can be done over TB4 with DisplayStreamCompression (DSC) at 8-bit color.

Personally, I think Apple is not trying to chase display marketshare. I believe we got the Studio Display because Apple has decided that the Mac Studio is the formal replacement for the iMac 5K and therefore needed to offer an external version of the iMac 5K's display to be paired with a Mac Studio.

And as much as the forum laughs at the $5000+ price of the Pro Display XDR, it seems to have sold enough units to justify a new model. And if they offer a smaller (27" @ 5K) model at a lower price (~$3000), that might prove even more popular.
how would they distinguish the Pro display XDR 2 ( 32, 7K, XDR)and ASD Pro (27, 5K, 120Hz)?

ASD Pro would also support HDR and is a much cheaper choice with unique 120hz.
Pro display XDR 2 is just a bigger monitor without 120hz and much expensive.

The lineup is confusing, would people pay much more just for a bigger panel? or they are both having 120hz?

Is the 7K 120hz 32' monitor possible?

What I fault Apple with is trying to pitch the 27" studio display as necessary for someone that has a 2021 14"/16" MBP, or the recent 2020/2022 MBA's which already has FaceTime camera, speakers. The same is true for iPad Pro usages with an external display. The display duplicates what you already have with these products. I recognize most displays have built in camera/speakers but its doesn't need to be sophisticated using a A13 for example.

The A13 is there to support the ancillary items that third-party displays do not offer (Center Stage, Spatial Audio, "Hey Siri") and I imagine Apple sees all of it as a "value add" to help support the (much) higher MSRP.

As such, I am not surprised Apple is said to be doing the same with the next set of displays they are developing.

@dylandkt did mention in December 2021 that LG was working on a new line of 32", 27" and 24" displays for Apple. They stated that the 32" and 27" had ProMotion Mini-LED and the 32" had an A-series SoC, but that the 24" was just the 4.5K iMac display in an external form factor. Assuming it has not been cancelled (or was a test-mule for an updated 24" iMac), this could be that "cheap' (for Apple) display to anchor the lower end of the product line.

A $999 24” secondary monitor for the iMacs (in matching colors) would be a cool addition to the lineup.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, 999 is too much. A base iMac can be had for only a couple hundred more. $799-$849 would probably be a more reasonable price point.
That is why they don't do 24' monitor, is not profitable than imac. They are selling M series chip with imac that reduces the developing cost.

And Apple do not want to compete with other manufacturers in 4K monitor market.

Hopefully they'll fix the abysmal camera on the Studio display, and cut the price by at least $100 while they're at it.
It'd be nice, but Apple hasn't been in that rapid revision operating mode for at least a decade, and I dunno if it'd even be possible with the supply chain issues for them to iterate a better revision and get it out in a year or 18 months. Let alone make it cheaper.

I figure it makes much more sense to rev the XDR with ProMotion.

Another paid exclusive from Gurman to his subscribers that literally tells us nothing.

Never gonna happen but would quite happily buy a new Cinema Display. Three sizes, 24”, 27” and 32” maybe. £800, £900 and £1000 perhaps. As I say, this will never happen, purely just ideal-world thinking.

If they label it a Pro Display XDR, that would set it apart from the Apple Studio Display as a higher-end model.

Also, speculation is that this display will be at least $1000 more expensive than the Apple Studio Display so it would be aimed at a different market segment and Apple's expectation is that people would not generally cross-shop the two displays.
This monitor will cost > $5,000.00 US.

I fully expect a higher price as well.... but im amazing how Apple consumers continually allow themselves to get ripped off. Even when this is mentioned, there's so many apologists that come out and make excuses justifying the prices. Just embarrassing all around.

Something like that:

Man, seeing this and now, in retrospect, thinking what a clunky solution this was.

I’m sure Steve Jobs, when he was working with the engineering and design teams on this monitor, wanted a 1 cable solution, and the tech just wasn’t there at the time for it. Now, all 3 of these cables are elegantly combined into a Thunderbolt 3/4 USB-C cable.

Why would a ProMotion/MiniLED Studio Display be released *so soon* after the previous one?

It has not even been a year. Apple rarely updates non-Phone/iPad/Mac devices on an annual basis. Look at how long it took them to upgrade the Airpod Pros/Max.

Previous track record updating displays is not very hopeful.

While I would love a 5k ProMotion/MiniLED priced like the current ASD I think it is a pipedream right now. Where can you even get a 4k miniled with 120fps refresh?

Another thing: 5k 120fps will take a lot of bandwidth. Most USBC/Thundsrbolt standards could barely support it, esp with multiple monitors.

My prediction: this wont come until macs are all updated with new versions of Thunderbolt/USBC
I agree. I think the soonest would be end of the year or more likely early 2024. The XDR with Promotion could come around WWDC with the new Mac Pro. Both with new designs and features.

I thought this too - then I bought the latest Dell ultra sharp 27 with its near infinite adjustability and couldn’t stand or correct the wobbliness while typing. Eventually gave up and replaced it with an admittedly overpriced but also unbelievably rock solid Studio display.
