As unhappy as I am with my Surface Laptop 4, I really do like the convenience of the facial recognition logon. Now if I'd just use that thing more...

I could've predicted this wtf lol.

Anyways it is long overdue for the Mac. Face ID makes the most sense for Macs. Though I'm very happy it's on my iPad Pro.

Why would I want facial recognition as an authorization reature on a device I *sit in front of and stare at all day*? Remember, touchID isnt just for logging in! Not to mention it means I can’t keep the camera covered when I’m not in a meeting….

Also they just made it easy to use touchid on devices that arent pointed at you (mac minis, laptops in clamshell mode while docked, eventually the mac pro, etc), why would they swap that for tech that requires a camera that may not be available?

I have my doubts on this
I'm not sure if I'm understanding correctly, but how do you use touchid when your laptop is in clamshell mode? Also, it would just another option, you can keep your camera covered if you don't want to have it enabled all the time.

Couple of years 🤔. All screen iPhone without notch will be good. But having TouchID also under the display is something to look forward to

They just introduced a wireless keyboard with touchid on it….

Enjoy the Eastern European and Chinese spyware that comes free with your Windows device. It works so well you wont even know it’s there.
Sort of like the Pegasus spyware that was recently found on 37 iPhones of journalists and other people of interest? I bet they didn't even know it's there...

I still dont understand why the entire lineup doesnt have the power button touchid from the iPad Air, it’s fantastic

I predict this will go hand in hand with the "iOS Style" lockdown of macOS which apple has been building toward.

Hazel, Little Snitch, Rogue Ameoba will all be in jeopardy but the ovis aries will be happy. 😀

Craig Federighi repeatedly said they don’t want to change the openness of macOS and that, in fact, the way iOS and iPadOS are built allows them to keep macOS open and complex. He also mentioned that sideloading is not going away on Macs. So, no, they are not building towards it. I don‘t see why any of the apps you mention are going to be in jeopardy, unless Apple sherlocks them. Like, Shortcuts may endanger Hazel and, in some way, iCloud Private Relay and limiting tracking may reduce the need for Little Snitch for some people (even though they are very different) but this supposed “lockdown” you mention isn’t happening with M1 macs (which was the best opportunity to do so if they really wanted) and most likely not happening anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the PC world that is so far behind Macs, has had this technology for years. Anyone can buy a Windows Hello compatible camera and have Face ID on any Windows 10 machine. My almost four year old Thinkpad laptop has this.

My grandparents are quicker to adopt technology compared to Apple.
…a cheap 2D or IR camera is nowhere near the same level of tech or security of VCEL based depth mapping.

Windows Hello is simply “this kind of looks like you, come on in to the device”. It’s up to the OEMs to decide what camera or IR equipment they use, and as usual, it’s the cheapest possible hardware they go with.

Yeah, because a spyware that was installed by secret agencies on a few devices and discovered is the same as installing tracking software on millions of devices by default.

Nowhere near the same tech or the same level of security. Have you seen Windows Hello being used for monetary transactions? No? Say hi to your grandparents.

Oh right, I was slow. So it's pretty safe to say that face recognition will not replace touch ID anyway. I'm sure there are people out there that welcome it as an additional option.

Interesting to see how Apple is desperately playing catch-up to Microsoft who has had Face ID for 2+ years.
Apple had FaceID in 2017. There are obviously other reasons for not adopting the tech on the Mac. Could have been done 4 years ago. You think they are stumped? 😂

How are you even getting that from this rumor.

Dear MacRumors editors. I have certain sources within the tech community. I can now exclusively reveal that within the next few decades Apple will release a new chip with more computing power. Please link to my online profiles so I collect advertising revenue. Pleasure doing business with you.

not if they wanted people to actually make the transition. I believe there would have been a lot of resistance. Hi, here is the new Mac. If your favorite apps arent in the App Store, you won't be using them anymore.

I am guessing you do not use Hazel or Little Snitch because you don't seem to grasp what they can do..
