sorry I hurt your feelings but it is accurate when it concerns locking down a computer like a phone. we already have s "computer" with diapers, its called an iPad.
I’m honestly surprised why Apple does not close the door in Monterey. Maybe next few versions they will, as they phase out all intel chips alongside all the support. All the bells and whistles power users enjoy today: terminal, console, full fledge file system, ability to install apps outside of App Store, install software through repository etc, will all go away in a wimp and macOS will become the next iOS.

“The facial recognition sensor gives Apple two central features: security and augmented reality. Touch ID, more convenient or not, only provides the former.”

What augmented reality features does Face ID enable? Memojis and video filters? Anything else?

Why would I want facial recognition as an authorization reature on a device I *sit in front of and stare at all day*? Remember, touchID isnt just for logging in! Not to mention it means I can’t keep the camera covered when I’m not in a meeting….

Also they just made it easy to use touchid on devices that arent pointed at you (mac minis, laptops in clamshell mode while docked, eventually the mac pro, etc), why would they swap that for tech that requires a camera that may not be available?

I have my doubts on this
Apple: here is the indicator we implemented years ago. Use this to tell if your camera is on or not.
As for other lower end macs, sorry, we dont sell them anymore. Go buy a MacBook Air if you are poor.
Mac Pro will come with monitors built specifically for it. You cant use any other professional monitor.

Apple is patiently waiting for the people who grew up with real computers to die off and their new generation of phone people will all gladly accept a "more safe and secure empire" with macs that that will only run the software that apple allows you to run.

This sounds reasonable to me, but I think Apple will pull the plug the moment they release macOS that drops support of last supported Intel macs. Could be two or three more versions down the line, and lockdown begin.
Craig can say all he wants, but that won’t change the eventual lockdown future.

Meanwhile, the PC world that is so far behind Macs, has had this technology for years. Anyone can buy a Windows Hello compatible camera and have Face ID on any Windows 10 machine. My almost four year old Thinkpad laptop has this.

My grandparents are quicker to adopt technology compared to Apple.
If you are comparing Windows Hello with Face ID, I rest my case.

Secure? Cops (or bad guys) can just take your pic and open your phone. How stupid. And they probably snatch your pics to the NSA database as well.

Did they notice that Face ID works poorly with face masks ?

Having both Touch ID and Face ID would be great, but only the latter, not so much.

I predict this will go hand in hand with the "iOS Style" lockdown of macOS which apple has been building toward.

Hazel, Little Snitch, Rogue Ameoba will all be in jeopardy but the ovis aries will be happy. 😀
It depends on regulations. There are multiple cases in the US and the EU about this.

In any case, there are many perfectly fine with the choice they have in the App Store. For everyone else, there are other platforms, in the words of Apple's head of user privacy, Erik Neuenschwander.

Calling people sheep because they don’t share one opinion is actually just rude and highlights both a degree of immaturity and a certain insecurity actually.

Complete nonsense.

Honest headline: “Gurman upset with predictions being instantly proven wrong so extends predictions to years rather than months”

What did he get wrong here? He said Face If wasn’t coming to the iMac months before it launched and now is saying it will come to more products over the coming years.

But don’t let facts get on your way.

What if these rumors we’ve been seeing for Apple patenting periscoping camera technology is for being able to fit Face ID into thinner displays like the iMac and MacBook Air/Pro? Instead of what we presumed would be for the rear camera of an iPhone?

so you bring nothing to the thread other than parroting the other speech police. 😀
