My coworker tried to switch from a laptop to an iPad as his primary device. (We have a shared “office Mac” for video editing that he can use for heavy lifting tasks.)

He gave up after 6 weeks. There is a non-zero number of web apps that are missing features from their iPad apps and simply direct you to the web app to do the task. BUT - on iOS/iPad OS their web app only auto launches the app again!

He got caught in an endless loop on many apps that apparently think their users are using phones and Macs only.

It’s not just Apple that’s avoiding iPad OS. Many developers act like it’s irrelevant too.

I acquired the 11" M1 2TB iPad and added the Brydge keyboard. It works as my smallest portable computer with the keyboard. The builtin modem allows remote operation that is self contained with not sharing of cellular connections. I also have a 2019 16" fully loaded MacBook Pro, 2021 14" MacBook Pro Mac loaded and a 2020 M1 MacBook Air. The common thread is that these the most recent devices share the M1 processors and all of them seem to have the same single core speed.

I have a cable coming out of a "hub" that provides both power and internet access over a USB C connector. The iPad is hands down faster at downloading app updates and installing them than either M1 laptop. The Intel based is the slowest of my gear but is needed for legacy equipment.

Even the new Mac Studio top model has the same single core speed. So it appears one really needs to have super expensive software to get beyond the two core use of the 90s by Adobe. I do not see software adds for the current software for the general users that proudly display the number of cores they can use for multi-threading.

Supposedly, the M2 may have a 15% speed improvement. That is the performance boost that impacts the single core operations of everyday software.

The iPad’s OS has always been its weak point. And they’ll —never— allow it to be a laptop replacement.
Gotta remember, Apple’s game plan is for people to buy BOTH a laptop and an iPad
Maybe now that is the plan, but it wasn't so long ago that Apple were trying too tell us we didn't need a "computer" because an iPad could do it all. I reckon they were quite prepared to drop Macs altogether as an inconvenience from another era and put all of their resources into iPhones, iPads, accessories and subscriptions. I am glad they are beck to telling us that the Mac has always been in their DNA etc. But I reckon Cook would have dropped the Macs like a stone. That was around the time they had not updated many Macs for years. It was also felt then that we never see another Apple display.

IPad Pro 10.5 inches here.
Poor battery life, still OK CPU.
I want to updgrade, but if the display is the same then it is not a real
Upgrade!, merely “updated CPU”. 5 years and still can’t have OLED in any iPad at this price range?. Super greedy from Apple.
How about an iPad without so many camera?, they are totally useless for me and instead give me a better display to compensate the costs?.

No they moved it for the goal of earning more money, it’s simply a cost saving decision, by using the M1 in more and more devices it must save them a fortune, on top of that due to the genius marketing of M1 and having a ‘Mac’ chip in an iPad it will in turn increase sales of the device as people will be duped into thinking they are getting MacBook levels of performance in their iPad which they simply don’t due to the softwares limitations.
So you’re suggesting the M1 is cheaper to produce than the A15 chip?

Wait a LiDAR Scanner no one will ever use isn’t pushing you to upgrade your device?!

I need a reason to update my iPad Air 3 and this may be it. I use mine mainly for watching videos and playing music. My 64 GB is getting full.

I just picked up a 12.9 5th gen loving the screen and the overall snappiness of the m1, I got a decent deal on it and I figure the next model will be more of a spec bump, hopefully keep this for a few years and see what's new in 2 or 3 years from now
I'm with you Scarpad! I'd really have to see some major improvements (including in iOS) in order for me to jump from my 2021 iPP. Let me preface this with saying I do get a lot of use out of my 5th generation iPP.

Of course it makes it harder to upgrade, due to entry cost, for me because I did go for the 1TB memory and 16GB. I was of course hoping that iOS was about to undergo some major upgrades. Unfortunately the small improvement in iOS have probably made my iPP (with the higher than base specs) a bit of overkill.

Maybe Apple will show a little Kaizen here and give a little retro love to the 5th generation iPad when the next generation come out? But I'm not holding my breath ;)

By the end of this decade, the Macbook and iPad Pro lines will likely be further and further integrated until one of them are eliminated. Makes sense, long-term.

Please move the camera to landscape position. Looks awful when using the magic keyboard. I’ll buy even if there were no other spec changes.

I'll probably upgrade to 11 with 16GB RAM. I normally dont upgrade every year. Last upgrade was 10.5 from 4 years ago but I am loving the 11" M1. Right now, I am running UTM which allows me to run real Debian/Ubuntu as a VM. So I need the memory to make a true portable laptop on-the-go. As long as I can I run Docker and Visual Studio Code, I am good.

First thing I want to know is, will Apple cheap out on aluminium chassis? If even iPad Pro don’t deserve good build quality, I am in doubt Apple would ever deliver anything that is decent. Cutting corners like thinner exterior is never a good sign.

Internals? Who cares. As long as it runs iPadOS (aka iOS), no amount of Apple silicon matters, even if Apple decides to stick M2 Ultra in it. iPadOS will run just as good with A12X as with M2.

I wish Apple had chosen a different name for wireless charging in the iOS devices. The use of the term MagSafe is simply confusing, esp. since it doesn't add much of a safety aspect to the devices.
I suspect MagSafe II or MagSafe+ will have data capabilities and will be introduced on the iPad Pro line first. At present the way SmartConnector on iPad works permits data and charging however it is limited to bandwidth. USB-4 the port is located on the bottom which is strange when using an iPad in landscape mode as there are wires and dongles extending from that port. In Portrait mode it is also limited with the wire extending from below.

Now consider as a transition product MagSafe+Data is introduced on the iPad Pro line alongside a USB-4 port and eventually that USB port will be removed. The magnets will be stronger and would allow an iPad to rotate in any orientation while a MagSafe puck is attached at the back for charging and data. Apple would make the case that it’s more efficient and clean plus flexible.

Eventually this MagSafe+Data will be rolled out on iPhone Pro and what you eventually have is no physical port and IPX and battery capacity improves. It also means Apple beloved proprietary fix is satisfied. If there is no physical port on the device the EU will have to reevaluate its present law. Apple will also claim it’s safer and environmentally friendly due to broken ports. Puck charger on one end and USB-C/4 on the other.

I just hope iPadOS gets some DeX mode this way if people want it simple they can use touch bases and when connected to a keyboard, mouse, trackpad or some combination case it can activate DeX mode if the user pleases. This solution will satisfy both groups and will be more costly but Apple will make more money than selling a MBA as it will have a MFi revenue stream. Win = Win

So you’re suggesting the M1 is cheaper to produce than the A15 chip?
It’s likely is now yeah, as it’s used in:

MacBook Airs
Entry MacBook Pros
iMacs
Mac mini’s
iPad Pro’s
Now the iPad Air…

You have to remember the cost of these chips isn’t in the production it’s the actual development, once they are being churned out of the factory they cost Apple pennies, now the development of the M1 is done those chips will cost buttons for them to produce…

They could have likely used the A15 as that is being churned out at a cheap cost per unit now also, but the M1 has far better marketing behind it at this present time, so when Apple sat down and decided whether to go with an M1 or an A15, they likely opted for the M1 due to what is likely cheap costs plus for marketing reasons it will sell the Air, because they know this upgrade is quite a poor one, the M1 is what will sell it with the consumers dream that one day Apple will actually do something major with iPadOS.

On top of this they are likely stock piling A15’s now for the iPhone 14 models,

In my mind, the story and focus should be on the new iPadOS. The M2 chip and MagSafe are gimmick sales tactics without a more robust OS.
Totally agree. At the current time we have the equivalent of a Ferrari with a lawnmower engine installed in it. It might look good on the outside, but it won't do much. IMO, Apple should take 2 or 3 years and concentrate on squashing bugs and developing a powerful iPadOS with a true file system. What we currently have is little more than an expensive toy for viewing photos and video, surfing the internet, playing games, and social networking. They should either take that stupid "Pro" name off of it, or make it into a laptop alternative.
