What is wrong with "the way Apple is handling the studio?" other than the ridiculously s l o w upgrading of course. I was forced to buy an M2 MBP because M2 Studios took so long to be released. The constant upgrade delays may literally mean I never get a Studio, despite the fact that [other than being far behind the update curve] it is my ideal desktop solution.
You just explained the biggest issue on how they are handling the studio. You got a laptop (something I cannot use) because you were unable to get the studio.

So as someone that needs the power (M3 Max at the moment) but needs the IO capabilities (5 monitors, DAS, multi 25Gb devices, Thunderbolt SSDs, etc), I am kinda stuck here. Like I said, when Intel was used no top of the line desktop was beaten by a laptop chip, for many generations.

They might sell more if the machines weren't such a poor value for half their lifespan. No one who does their research is going to buy an Apple desktop right now unless they are desperate. I would love a new Studio but it would be absurd to pay that price for what's on offer right now.
Exactly this. You know what would have made people purchase them? BY HAVING AN M3 ULTRA!

If I did not need the IO, I would certainly get a laptop, and upgrade every chip because every performance boost saves me loads of money. But the three thunderbolt ports on the laptop isn't enough for me.

Hmm, is it just me? I read Gurman’s entire article and he doesn’t mention M4 Mac’s whatsoever. This looks like click bait. I mean the M3 MBP just came out in November, and now another one this year? Nah. Just macrumours spreading rumours again to generate web traffic for their advertisers.

I seem to remember reading that the M3 is made on a process with poorer yields and that they are keen to move away from it quickly for that reason.

It's not uncommon here for companies to fully ban staff from connecting to USB ports at external sites, due to data sensitivity. Connecting physically stopped being a thing a few years ago 🤷🏼‍♂️

I frequently use my HDMI port on my laptop for watching streaming services on the TVs around my home, though, so I wouldn't want to lose it! It irritates me that Air, my primary personal laptop, misses that feature, but a $15 dongle solved the issue. Well, until I left it in a hotel abroad. 😬 Bloody dongles...
Do hotels provide you with an HDMI cable or would you have had to bring that in lieu of a USB-C to HDMI cable?

More often than not the TVs in hotel rooms connect to a box via HDMI that you can use. I've also used Chromecasts and a Firestick in the past, but they can be a pain in the ass with WiFi, so I'd rather just plug in my laptop. Sometimes you can't access the back/sides of a hotel TV, which would be game over if they hadn't already wired in one HDMI cable to connect to a box. All less of an issue for me these days, as I'm in hotels for about 5% of the time I was 6 years ago.

Regardless of all that, I mostly connect my laptop at home, not on the go. I haven't needed to buy any new cable as I have a bunch of HDMI cables, but should I wish to use my MacBook Air like that again, I'll have to buy a new USB-C to HDMI cable or a new dongle with a connector.

i really wish there was the modern equivalent of a pcmcia slot or something in macbook pros and they would make an intel or AMD co-processor board you can place in there. In my workflow, being able to seamlessly go between macos (as master OS) and windows (for work) was indispensable. The speed of the M3 in emulating an x86 is atrocious and unusable. I had to return the newer macbook as it was not good for my use case. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love this. Would be great even for gaming if they had a ryzen based co-processor which has decent embedded graphics. I love macos and it's too bad, they could make $$$ if they did this. I remember as a kid when computers would give you such options instead of sealed disposable items.

Unlikely on the SD Card and HDMI ports. Those are professional ports while the Air is a low-end consumer model aimed at students and people buying their first Mac for media consumption and web browsing and maybe some light work. We might get more Thunderbolt ports since the base M4 chip has four Thunderbolt controllers which is two more than the M1-M3 had.
In which Marvel Universe is the HDMI a professional port? Students do have to do presentations too. It's a terrible upselling tactic when third party adapters are dirt cheap and what they only achieve is annoying their users. Besides, a MacBook Air is not just about being cheaper, but a different class of product. Smaller, lighter and totally quiet. For me the Pro is not only more expensive but also a worse product. Not having an hdmi port just adds to the ever growing list of annoyances that might one day make me to show the middle finger and leave the whole god damn ecosystem.

I don’t get why you’re so triggered by this.

The strategy seems to be that Apple will update its portable machines with each chip iteration and have the Mac Mini/Studio and iMac alternate with each skipping a generation. As for the Mac Pro, I’m not sure that’s got much of a future in its current iteration.

If someone bought an M2 (inc Pro, Mac, Ultra) desktop machine at launch and are limited by performance, their work flow has dramatically changed or they under spec’d it.
People defending this nonsense strategy usually think about 1-2 generational upgrades. But most people upgrade less frequently or simply when their existing machines die. Imagine your machine dies now, and the replacement lags behind two generations, simply because they are lazy and/or they think this somehow maximizes profits. Wouldn't you be utterly displeased? And this time they can't blame Intel, I was hoping one benefit of using their own designs would be more frequent and predictable upgrades.

No, they don’t. For some bizarre reason, most Windows laptops seem intent on sticking with at least one USB-A ports, which ends up taking away an actual good port. I’ve even seen some with two USB-A. Why, i couldn’t tell you. USB-C 3.1 (aka 3.2 rev 1) is better than USB-A’s 480Mbps, but is still mediocre. Most of the ones I’ve seen have only a single USB4 port. Windows manufacturers seem to have other priorities.
USB-A can do usb 3 gen 2, aka 10 Gbpss, so no, that port isn't wasted. And usb-c can also be limited to 480 Mbps, as demonstrated by Apple on the iPad 10...

If you’re the sort of person that keeps your Mac until it dies, I can’t help you. I like to take advantage of the high resale value of a Mac and typically swap it out every 3 years or so, sometimes up to 5 depending on what’s changed with the platform.

However, if you’re forced into buying a machine and you happen to need the power of the M Ultra Chip, I guess you just buy that but I don’t think many people will be in that situation. If you need the MaX and under and really want the latest and greatest, you have choice. You can get that in a MBP and if you have a desktop set up, just dock it with the lid closed. If you really want a desktop then it’s you that’s making that decision. The choice is there.

Yeah, the worst of both worlds. A bigger, heavier machine with the same limitations as the Air but with and hdmi port for 200 or whatever more. Yay!
And a better display and speakers. I wouldn’t buy it personally but that extra money gets you more than just the HDMI port. And guess what, better speakers and a fan weight more.

Me and my 14" M3P MBP are screaming
I just bought a Space Black M3 Pro MBP 14" 6 weeks ago. I knew the M4 Macs were not far away but I just wanted a better display, extra ports, speakers, and the color of the M3 Pro, otherwise my M1 MBA is still a rockstar. I really don't notice any speed difference in the apps and tasks I do day to day between my M3 Pro MBP and M1 MBA. M1 was a real step change. Next Apple product for me will be the iPad Mini 7.

MacBook Pro is a worse product than the Air? What Marvel universe are you in? They are both great products, but the MacBook Pro has additional ports (TB4/USB-C port on the right is clutch), much better display and speakers, more power, more base RAM, more base SSD storage. What universe makes that a worse product? A better way of saying that would have been the wrong product for some people. The Air is more than enough for most people, but that doesn't make the MacBook Pro worse.

Furthermore, as for noise, my M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14 fan has never turned on that I can hear. Not once since I've owned it. It's silent.

Please notice the "for me" part, thanks. The pro doesn't have more ram, and it has the same cpu with marginally better thermals. I don't care about it's display and speakers. The Air with same ssd is still cheaper.

Only addressing the fan and not the size and weight is also a nice touch.

Note that Gurman talks about the M4 chip here, maybe the M4 Pro & M4 Max variants (and the high-end 14 inch & 16 inch models that come with it) are delayed until 2025.
I don’t think Apple will allow for a base M4 MacBook Pro to exist alongside M3 Pro/Max ones. That’ll confuse professional users. If they update the laptops, I believe they’ll just release all variations.

A physically lighter MBP is critical - the current offering hardly qualifies as a portable. FFS it's a full pound heavier than a Mac mini (yeah I know - it has a screen, still).

As the daily user of both an M2 MacBook Air (personal) and M1 Pro MacBook Pro (work-issued), the thin, light weight MBA is, for me, a game-changer. It's hands-down my fav Mac I've ever used (dating back to Performa 6300 era). Amongst other things, it effortlessly tackles most everything I throw at it. Is the MBP screen better? Yep. Is if faster to render massive files? Uh-huh. Have either of those benefits outweighed the benefits of a nearly as comparable a machine at a fraction of the weight? Not at all.

So you want a laptop with more ports, but you don't want the extra size and weight.

I, too, would like a pony.
That's not how this works, and you should know it. Btw, I'd trade the magsafe for a hdmi in a heartbeat, so still just three ports :)
