It's not loud, it's annoying. It is whisper quiet, but the high pitch sound from it is unbearable. It's like a very very VERY VERY quiet whistle. Barely....just barely noticeable. But it is non stop and so darn annoying. Like I keep saying, I would like a louder Mac without the whine.

My Mac Studio Ultra is dead quiet. It's a great computer.

What was Apple's response when you inquired about having that fixed/replaced?

I really hope they do an updated Studio - I have zero plans of upgrading anytime soon, but the form factor is awesome (sits on my desk out of the way) and the price isn’t bad for what you’re getting. Hoping my current one won’t be my last one. Studio for heavy work at desk and M2 Air for admin work is proving to be an awesome combo after years of 15” MacBook pros

Then why did you make Mac Studio if Mac Pro with M2 Ultra is similar to Mac Studio? Apple is making another mistake.
Because it won't be similar. The idea that Apple would kill the Studio because they couldn't make a Mac Pro that would significantly exceed the capabilities of the Studio was completely absurd. If that were the case, they would have called the Studio the new "Mac Pro".

Also, the ability to add additional internal storage. Not exciting, no, but the only Apple Silicon machine capable of doing so.
None of that is good enough. Apple doesn't care enough about those things and neither do most potential customers. The Mac Studio's storage is technically upgradable if Apple decided to offer that... they don't need to make a whole new machine. Whenever they make a new Mac Pro, it will be a lot better than a Mac Studio in a tower case, or Apple won't do it at all.

I agree with that. The Mac Pro will have to offer something far beyond what the Mac Studio offers. "The same as the Mac Studio, but with upgradeable storage" like some of the recent Gurman rumors have suggested is not going to happen. That isn't enough to justify the higher price and the separate product category.

There are Sonnet expansion chassis for the Mac Studio that can support various graphic cards. My fully loaded Mac Studio listed for $7,999.00 before sales tax or warranty. My military discount took off 10% and the 3% Apple Pay discount helped. I always buy the fully optioned devices since the day of customer inside the box tweaks are over. I see it as the cost of staying in the game.

I never hear any fan noise from the Mac Studio as there is the A/C air flow in the room. There is more air flow noise coming from the 8 port Ethernet 10GB hub than the Studio.

I think these $6,000+ laptops and top line Mac Studios are at the price point now on requiring several years and a major jump in performance to justify as one gets pennies on the dollar as a trade in.

For my use, the Mac Studio form factor fits under the primary Studio Display mounted to a VESA arm support. The secondary Studio Display is to the right of the first one and also on a VESA arm. Beside the Studio is a postal scale so space is effectively utilized. I do not want another huge tower. I had those from the G4 & G5 days up to the Trash Van Mac Pro. A appreciate the lack of noise and wasted desk space this arrangement provides me.

Apple computers that won't run Intel emulations are practically worthless. You can't run windows Apps, can't run linux, so basically you just set and look at it. Oh, well I guess there is mail, twitter, and browsing. You can get all of that on a Raspberry Pi. Of course the Pi does not have the advertising budget that Apple has.
"M1 Mac Linux 6.2 support is now available – an achievement that Linux creator Linus Torvalds originally saw as an impossible task. It can be run on the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra chips."

It's not ready for prime time yet, device drivers still need work, but the kernel is up.

That reminds me of the case of the whine from back in CRT days. It seems the young ladies of the office were all complaining about a whine and none of the older managers could hear it. The managers brought in a test outfit to prove the women were making it up, and discovered there was indeed a whine up around 15 khz. Young people could hear it, high frequency hearing drops off as you get older, so Management could not.

Has someone put a good microphone and an oscilloscope near a studio to see what frequency it's putting out?

There is an easy fix for it: get rid of Ultra version for Mac Studio and put Ultra on Mac Pro only (with more RAM and RAID options, more robust cooling (liquid cooling?), etc.) for more expensive price tag.

I don’t really see the point in the Mac Sudio as a distinct product line, stuck between the Mini and the Pro. How would you describe it to someone in a way that clearly differentiates it?

Pair it with an Apple Studio Display and it is a replacement for the higher-tier iMac 5Ks (the i9/32GB/1TB/5700XT configurations that were over $3000).

I think there might be an M2 Mac Studio announced at WWDC but no Mac Pro yet.
well that would be disappointing for a lot of folk… but if a Mac Pro isn’t ready go then updating the MS would make sense… M2 Ultra would be nice… maybe that will happen and we wont get a Mac Pro until the M3 is out and they can resurrect the M3 Extreme architecture …. that would set the MP apart from the MS and give them all a place in their line up…

I think I'm future proofed with the m1 ultra for a while.. seems like with Apple it's best to buy near release date since you never know if there will be any upgrades or discontinue and rarely if ever price drops for old hardware. I had the first 2006 Mac Pro until the first trash can 2013 Mac Pro then dropped to a 2017 iMac 27" before getting this Studio Ultra. I am curious of what the Apple silicon Mac Pro will even be.

Then why did you make Mac Studio if Mac Pro with M2 Ultra is similar to Mac Studio? Apple is making another mistake.
Probably because the Mac Pro starts at $5999. Unless Apple decides to drastically drop the price on the Mac Pro, there will still be room for the Mac Studio which starts at $3999 for the M1 Ultra version. Presumably the M2 generation is not significantly more expensive than the M1 as it has not been for any of the other M2 variants.

That is is significantly less expensive than the $6000.00 Mac Pro. There is a huge price gap between the Mini and the Mac Pro and the Studio sits comfortably in there. How would you describe the Mac Pro then? Offers pretty much the same performance as the Mac Studio but costs a lot more money.

Just please fix the annoying fan whine issue. I would take a louder fan over a very faint whine that is nails on a chalkboard. If this is done this will be a perfect product that fits my needs.
I've not dealt with this issue on a Mac Studio as I've never owned one, but I've dealt with whining fans on many laptops in the past and it's been enough to make me return them. I'm glad I'm not the crazy one that seemingly hears what no one hears. I've found my people here.

Fan whine/turbulence is a terrible problem that NEEDS to be addressed my manufacturers. Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pros still suffer from this issue too. It's a shame that it seems to be something companies pay attention to. Can the QC testers not hear it? It's a genuine possibility that they can't.

It’s not upgradable

I think you mean configurable at the time of purchase

All Macs are configurable at the time of purchase as well as expandable
(external storage and other external peripherals)

Upgradable ≠ Configurable ≠ Expandable

All different terms that mean very different things.
Hm, I don't see expandable thrown around very often. Would that imply expansion beyond the box? Like an eGPU?

I have this small suspicion that the Mac Studio will end up being the top-spec Mac in the long term. I have a bad feeling about the Pro.

Unnecessary and silly, when an Ultra can go in a Studio. If Apple can't make a new Mac Pro that really stands out without playing silly games with restricting options from other machines, they should just retire it completely.
