It should run a real OS

Like one that allows me to have multiple audio sources playing without muting one or the other

(to just barely even scratch the surface of issues with GimpediPadOS)
Okay, multiple audio sources.

That doesn't sound like a tablet specific thing--the iPhone and Mac could do either with the right software.

What else?

The iPads are not "limited by software."

iPads are limited because they are nothing but a rectangular piece of glass.

No amount of "software" is going to turn an 11 to 13 inch sheet of glass into a MacBook replacement or whatever all the people who say "this machine is limited by software" thinks it should turn into.

But software! Well, finish the thought? What should it be if "software" is no longer as obstacle? What are you iPad people complaining about software looking for? Should it turn into a toy robot or car?
They are limited by software. This post sums up my thoughts well: https://www.macstories.net/stories/not-an-ipad-pro-review/

Every MacBook Pro since 2006 has kept the same design for exactly four release cycles. This is the first time the same design will be in 5 since the aluminum PowerBook G4.

Time to start socking away money for that M6 OLED…

I think people want the iPad to be a Mac-equivalent of a Windows Surface Pro which, if you aren't familiar" is a super thin, light, and small FULLY FUNCTIONING Windows laptop with touch and pen support.

Software most definitely is the key to make this happen.

Yeah, you are my exact point. You want an iPad to run Mac Apps so you can use Mac quality in an iPad factor.

That is not what an iPad was designed to be--you want that? You buy a Mac.

This is never going to change--ever.

So I think my thesis is correct--you people want Mac quality apps working on a 13 glass, touch first tablet.

That is not an iPad--that is a tablet running MacOS. Just buy a Mac.

"BUT I WANT IT IN AN IPAD FORM FACTOR!!!!"

Sorry, that is not how it works. Windows makes those kinds of tablets.

Or at least we'd like the option to use one that way.

Given all the changes to macOS over the recent years that have "iOS-ified it", and the now functionally identical hardware across MacBooks and iPads, it's honestly become almost ridiculous that there is no hybrid optionality.

Excellent link, especially coming from Federico, who is perhaps the most noted iPad evangelist out there.

I take his opinion on all this above nearly all others.
He's the poster child for I WANT MY MAC APPS TO WORK ON A TABLET LIKE THEY ARE MAC APPS!

But again, it is a touch 1st interface not made for that.

You know what device is made for that? Big secret--it's even in the name of his website.

It's a Mac. Buy a Mac. Stop waiting for Apple to make desktop Preview or Text edit because it ain't happening.

Maybe calm down a bit?
All caps screaming is not needed

Your preferences are not necessarily those of everyone else

Did you read any of the article I linked to? It's not about forcing the iPad to run Mac apps - it's about improving the fundamentals of the OS so that people who want to use it for more things, can do.

I absolutely do not want it to run MacOS - I just want it to be a better iPad. The things in that article are a good start.

The original Mac had a smaller screen than that. Apple had a 13" monitor for the early desktop Macs as well. System 7 has a full file system, networking, multiple drives and serial ports.

So why is an iPad so limited compared to a Mac IIci?

Since all your posts defend the iPad staying a pretty dumb tablet for casual single-tasking uses, then explain why it needs one of the most powerful chips on the market? Was it originally designed to have the same performance as a MacBook?

A brilliant point

If one is an OG iPad vision purist (casual single tasking uses), literally any iPad from the last about 6 years is perfect. Pick your screen size and you're good for a LONG time.

If we are being honest, if they'd put more RAM in it at the time, one could still be using a 2016 iPad Pro 9.7" just fine.

(OG iPP was my favorite iPad of all time -- still)

Agree completely.

I'd also add, if we look back at the All Thing D Steve Jobs interview from 2010 - he makes the analogy that PCs (meaning laptops/desktops) will be the "trucks" of the future, and the post-PC devices, i.e. the iPad, will be the "cars".

It's quite clear that the original vision of the iPad was that, once hardware and software matured sufficiently, it would be a replacement for a PC/Mac for the vast majority of people. I don't think this is consistent with the argument some people try to make, which is that the iPad should never be able to do something simply because it's not a Mac.

Wow, so number goes up? Hire me, I can do journalism. Sources tell me that in 2026 Apple releases the M6 iPad Pro. Shocking, right?
Sure - it is all amateur hour prognostications until Apple skips the iPhone 9 and goes right to the X. When the crowd went wild, I went wild right along with them.

One day...it will happen again. Maybe the M8 or the M9 get skipped -- or maybe they'll use a word or letter they've never used before.

THIS is why I keep coming back to MacRumors. I can't find out when everyone else finds out. I must know three days earlier than the plebeians!

Finish the thought. What is a "tablet OS?" What does current ipad not do that you want it to do?

Nobody ever says.
I want it to be less restricted along the lines of macOS. So that iPadOS apps can be developed more easily. This system is often overlooked.

Many features in countries like the Czech Republic and Poland still don't work. I would like this to change.

First and foremost, Finder, normal multitasking, access to terminal and development tools, better support for peripherals, multi-user support, full support for external screens, installation of .dmg applications.

He wants Apple to force developers to run apps in landscape mode when the keyboard is plugged in. This is ridiculous

Sure they are. Decisions to restrict third-party app sources, to require sandboxing, to limit extensibility, are entirely in software. You can't do something like Moom or iStat Menus on iPadOS. You can't try a third-party approach to window management; either Apple provides it or you're out of luck.

There's no hardware reason iPadOS can't be more similar to macOS.

They're basically a MacBook Air without a keyboard and trackpad, and a touch screen instead. They literally have the same SoC, even.

A great way to look at it.

Essentially we'd like the "tablet computer" to be allowed to be a more full fledged computer.

This is 2025. It's beyond tiring to see all the restrictions of iPadOS still present due to lack of effort from Apple, or, worse yet, for artificial product line segmentation business reasons.

So you shifted goalposts from "it's not because of software" to "OK, it is because of software, but Apple wants it so". OK.
