So apart from one video editing app you see zero use case for an iPad? I mean sure, nice to have FCP and other niche apps (although Luma probably covers the area well already) but tablets don’t strike me as the best platform for professional video editing in the first place. There are however plenty of things I do on iPads daily that cover my use cases and have nothing to do with editing.

Funnily enough, my use case would be different to yours. So it's great you have a use for it, whereas it's not so much for me. Sure, I would have other uses besides editing, but I can get along without those - without editing the iPad Pro just isn't worth the cost for me.
Editing on an iPad would fit into my workflow nicely - being able to edit on the go, then come back to my desk and continue with my project on my computer. I actually know several large YouTubers who shoot video on their iPhone and edit on their iPad Pro completely!

It's technically a waste because wireless charging is never as efficient as wired; sure is convenient tho.
Agreed. Except - this proposition is a supplement the regular charging. If it’s docked to a wireless charging stand, it’s just keeping up. If one wants to ‘charge’ the device, charge it in the normal manner.

Actually wireless plus USB-C charging would be worthwhile - you get a choice of speeds and MagSare protection; without adding another port.

Yeah, I get that, but thinking about the nature of wireless charging - sans the MagSafe puck - you’ve got to align a device perfectly over it. So now you’re doing a balancing act over the thing to get it just right. It isn’t the same as a phone where you typically can see the edges of the pad and can more easily line it up, you’re flying blind, and doing it with something much larger that can easily be knocked or nudged… and taking a much larger space.

Have a 16" M1 Pro MBP. Having a hard time trying to decide between upgrading my 2018 12.9" iPad Pro to this or selling it and getting the M2 MacBook Air as my travel companion.

Wonder if it will come with reverse wireless charging as well as I know it was also rumoured.

guess by October we will know the plan for the 14 inch iPad Pro and if it will happen

So then all is well - you’d simply need to use whatever software these famous YouTubers are using and. Be happy in iPad Pro land, right? It’s probably also a good idea to have a plan B at hand, just in case Apple one day does to FCP what they did to Aperture…

What’s holding you back from just using the 16” alone? I know, it’s a tad heavier than other MacBooks, but then it provides great workstation performance and has a good screen to match.

I finally got a chance to play around with the 16" and it isn't heavy at all and it's surprisingly thin when closed. After reading some of the comments on this site, I thought it was going to be a monstrosity ... and it wasn't. I might end up getting it.

Same here. After all the comments about its "massive size" I expected a boat anchor, but I went into the store, lifted it once, and bought a 16".

Touch first....
Its designed primarily as a touch interface. It needs to be usable as a stand-alone device without peripherals... if it doesnt then its failed. Apple know this.

.. dont be so patronising "MacRumors newbie".....

And yes.. if you want a MacOS app you buy a Mac.... id say thats the very definition of obvious wouldn't you?
Thats not what you initially said. Don't backtrack now...
Far from it, you are wrong there

It's not airplane friendly

With WWDC showing iPad can now use multiple apps and resizing windows, I'm curious to know how it is still crippled software? What exactly do you still need that it doesn't do?
The software still blocks the USB-C port except for it's approved uses, so AFAIK it still does not support YubiKeys with a USB-C port. It also does not have NFC so basically cannot function with a YubiKey.

No way, it would be a UI mess to use almost every Mac app with a touch first device. No way Apple will accept that.

Perhaps there will be an easier path for an iPad optimised version, but they aren't about to let unchanged Mac apps on the iPad.
Big Sur allowed unchanged iPhone apps, and Apple did accept that. Yes, it was a UI mess. On the iPad Pro it'd be less of a UI mess as long as the Magic Keyboard case is being used.

If Apple expands the wireless charging to be more like new / old MagSafe pin based charging, I’m all for that. What iPad Pro’s don’t need is a Qi wireless charging ”solution”. I keep my M1 iPad Pro on my Magic Keyboard charging through the MK’s USB-C port during the day, so I can quickly pull it off the “stand” for handheld use and not need to worry about unplugging it, but Apple could easily make a cord with a similar 3 pin magnetic connector to charge when not attached to the MK, keeping the USB-C port free for other uses.

i don’t know if other people think this, but it’s super annoying if apple comes out with yet another form factor for ipads just to sell you new keyboards again.

But neither is the smaller laptop, at least in economy.

You might be right. I guess I may just be trying to justify purchasing a midnight colored laptop lol. Unfortunately I don't use my 12.9" iPP as much as I thought I would even with the magic keyboard and seeking an alternative more portable productivity device

The size doesn't matter if it fits into your carry on bag.
Both devices would fit into carry-on bags, and both would be a pain to use on an economy flight if one is traveling with the typical cheapo airlines that pretend you don’t need proper fold-out tables.

That is one very nice blue colour for sure, no questions there! Go for what makes you happy, life is short!
