It's been a boneheaded decision right from the beginning.

I saw someone else try and defend it saying there's extra screen to the sides of it. No -- other manufacturers have webcams, no bezels, AND no notch.

The ONLY excuse Apple may have is I think they have a higher quality (read: bigger) webcam than other manufacturers so its possible they couldn't fit their camera within the bezel. Again, that's a big maybe.

Yeah my corporate slavery Dell does not have a notch. However it does have the worst possible camera I've ever seen in a laptop, the lid weighs as much as my entire macbook pro does, the screen has dim bits round the edges and it rattles like a box of broken crockery if you twang the top of the screen. The camera is so bad for Microsoft's awful version of FaceID only works if you're well lit room but not too well lit!

Terrible on a$5k 🤦🏻‍♂️machine. I'd be so pissed if I'd bought it for myself.

Give me the notch over this crap any day.

Looking forward to the release of M2 MacBook Pros, even though I’m set with my M1 Max 16” for a LONG time. And it will be interesting to see if Apple releases M3 MacBook Air in fall ‘23 or saves it for 2024. The big improvement for MBPs will come with M3 Pro/Max in ‘24 and that will be very tempting upgrade potential.

“…it has faced delays internally.”

Due to things like getting people to offices and learning each other pronouns?

This transition is an utter mess, overdue Pro machines, weird display design decisions, Mac mini hitting again multi year period of no upgrades, Touch Bar is still alive!!! Don’t recall such depressive Mac line up since I started following Apple in 2003
Do we feel like 2022 has been lacking AS updates, yes. Has Apple at least attempted to show some strategy with 2022 model rollouts, yes. Will 2023 be a more active year, yes considering the change of covid policy in China. ;)

wondering if it even makes sense to upgrade to a 14"? from an M2 air, have had no issues with this machine and its just he 8gb/512 model..

I love that Gurman doens't think WiFi 6E is a major update. Ever been to an airport / conference center / library where your laptop can't even connect to the WiFi thanks to all the interference? Ever seen how much interference exists on 2.4GHz and 5GHz when you live in an apartment in a major city?

WiFi 6E is by far going to be the quality-of-life improvement that people notice most.

It'll be great in the 3-5 years it takes for all those places to role out 6Ghz. But it won't have much advantage in the short term other than if you live in an apartment and buy a 6E router.

Apple's decisions have been baffling recently. When they released the M2, they should have thrown it into the iMac and Mac Mini immediately. It doesn't make any sense to hold back for six-plus months on an upgrade that requires nearly zero additional engineering work. Apple is too used to thinking "revision n+1 has to be compelling for buyers of revision n to upgrade" rather than "each of our Macs needs to have the newest, fastest, best tech available at the time". If that means they end up doing two revisions in a year, so be it! They need to make their computers compelling for NEW buyers (and those on ancient Mac systems like me).

I went from a base M1 Air to a base M1 Pro MBP. The biggest gains were the screen, audio and performance. All are noticeably better.

The current 14" MBP is a shockingly good laptop. It's hard to beat it.

*Sigh* Another year before an M3 iMac…
Why does this thought remind me of the 80186 that was not chosen and the 80286 was chosen to succeed the 8086 for personal computers. :D

Gee we haven't seen M2 variants and we have our eyes glued to M3's already because of Grumman rumors. ;)

Apple is really lagging on their Mac desktop offerings and updating the MacBooks more than necessary. Maybe everyone needs to go back to the office now so they get the innovation back.

Sheesh. What machine was that? $5,000? I agree that’s unacceptable for that price. I reckon it must be one of those workstation machines with a Quadro in it?

On the contrary, I have a laptop from Asus for $750 (I got it for $500 open box) and it is absolutely killer. Great build quality, 90Hz OLED panel, thin bezels. I’m ridiculously picky with laptops and I’m very fond of this one. I don’t know how they’re making any money on these things, but it puts Apple absolutely to shame in the value department.

At the rate at which they are launching these new chips, might as well they stuck to Intel. I thought a big part of the issue with Intel was new revs coming to market and the thermal issues. Now, they are taking longer with newer chips and the chassis of devices of MacBook Pro have gotten thicker.
They switched architecture not to release more often, but because they wanted to control how the machine works.
While MacBooks have become thicker, you forget that they are super silent, super zippy, and very easy on the battery drain.
So yes as you stated : "I thought a big part of the issue with Intel was new revs coming to market and the thermal issues."

Thermal issue and performance gain were addressed (heck the mini M1 is almost as fast as a Mac Pro).
Also, computers have become thicker because we wanted some ports back and they gave us what we wanted.

I am all for a 2-year cycle!
People underestimate the huge performance increase we gained with the lower consumption..... that's the main reason why the ditched Intel.

It makes no sense to make such a minor upgrade without a redesign.

What? So you want them to update for you, even though they've updated multiple times and you still haven't updated...

Dell precision 7670. Has Intel UHD in it.

Storage 1TB. RAM 64G. i7 12850HX

Asus stuff is ok if you can be without it for 3 months if it breaks.

That’s it? Why did it cost $5,000? That seems unusually high. I actually am curious.

Thankfully so good so far with the Asus. My father has had one for well over 5 years and thankfully his is doing well too.

Sadly, of all brands, it is Dell computers that are supposedly terrible. So many issues on forums with their XPS line. I’ve dealt with their customer service myself. Outsourced and not very good. These brands outsell Apple by what, 5:1 or more? You’d think they’d invest in their customer service. Sad.

Go price one up with that spec and chuck a ridiculous 210W dock in the basket. It’s completely bananas.

Dell service is awful. I’m on my second dock on this one and it won’t charge so I’m having to use a crap Anker port replicator as a dock.

This replaced the XPS that kept overheating.

I don’t get why they buy them. I can only suggest that whoever is in charge thinks this is business as usual. It’s not!
