I love that Gurman can claim he's right if:

  1. Apple Watch Ultra 3 with a chip bump only
  2. Apple Watch Ultra 3 with the same features as the normal redesigned watch
  3. Apple Watch Ultra 3 available in black
  4. Apple Watch Ultra 2 available in black
  5. Apple Watch Ultra 2 available in black and with a chip bump
Since he has predicted all of these separately based on his inside sources in the last 3 weeks. I mean at some point if you predict every single version, I guess you'll hit on one of them and then you can say you predicted it!
Does he receive reliable intel or is he “professional” guesser?

Either way, you’re right…he’s amazingly “predicted” many possibilities, lol.

Not sure. Still expecting Apple to launch a new one with very minor changes. New colour is very much possible.

Curious about all the talk of a larger size as well. Not that I personally would want a larger Ultra whatsoever….but if it’s an Ultra 2 series freeze.…then obviously everything floated over the last 8months has been nothing more than fantastical dreaming and speculation on all of theses sites and “insiders”.

Even if you just bump up the processor, add black option, new sensor (same as 10) and perhaps one additional upgrade (battery life? Screen size?)….how in the world do you not name it Ultra 3?

We shall see shortly, lol.

It makes no sense to me if they release a new chip for the S10, but leave the Ultra with the previous chip. I mean, not unheard of, but usually you want your flagship product to be distinctive somehow.

Even stranger is the thing that Apple seems to be updating EVERY PRODUCT they have so they would support Apple Intelligence. They need the A18 in the iPad Mini and so on. I would assume at this point that the S10 would be getting some sort of AI treatment as well. Not upgrading the Ultra, even with just a chip for the sake of AI would be really strange. IMHO.

Of course it might be that the watch is left out of the AI upgrades, as it is unlikely it would be running any sort of real AI task on the watch itself, probably offloading it to the phone or the cloud anyway. In this variation it would be ok to not make an Ultra 3 this year, as it would not be a real upgrade without sensor updates anyway.

But if there indeed would not be an Ultra 3, I would take that to mean a bigger upgrade is in the works (assuming a 2-3 year product cycles Apple usually does) for next year. No sense in getting an Ultra now in this case, even in a cool new black color. 🤷🏻‍♂️

They shouldn’t be updating any of these watches yearly. there simply isn’t enough of improvement.
Exactly my thoughts. This 1-year product cycle for most devices is just such a huge money grab. They're literally holding back features from this year products, so that new year ones can also sell better.

Make it a 2-3 year cycle, and provide some actual improvements!

The same could be said about iPhone, iPad, Mac etc … just imagine the uproar here

IMHO it should be the same. The differences between 2 iPhones, iPads, Macs etc. are incredibly tiny and for most people - invisible. With the obvious exception of large changes like the switch from Intel to Apple Silicon or reintroduction of thicker MacBooks.

What would that improve from a customer perspective?
I have lots more flexibility when there is a new product each year and still can decide if I wait one more year if the update is not worth it.
Less people would feel the need to upgrade based on FOMO alone.

In some circles getting the newest iPhone, AW etc. is a matter of "status" and it just creates a lot of extra garbage.

I'm just generally against this trend that we need to get a new device every year.

My money is on the new “Apple Watch Ultra Pro Max” now in space black titanium

At the (miniscule) risk of sounding like an idiot in approx. 10 hours, but how the f*** can one be so long on the Apple beat as Gurman and still make such a dumb-ass prediction? Apple will not have the regular Series Watch be functionally superior to the Ultra, hence either the S10 will have no new functionality at all (extremely doubtful) or there will absolutely be an Ultra 3 to keep feature parity (plus the extra stuff the Ultra has anyway).

Yes, true. These people exist. Concerning Apple Watches, I am one of these guys lately. Would have bought an AWU3 tonight, even though I have a AWU2. Not producing additional garbage as I would trade in my AWU2.

The vast majority of people are not of that kind. What I see in Apple Watches is that a lot of guys wear them quite long though and have no FOMO. Would even suppose they wear them longer as they use their iPhones. But this is purely anecdotical evidence.

They should have not upgraded AWU last year then done that minor change now with a new black colour and it be called AWU2

Not sure if I buy that. Why release a new color for a year old product. I could see color refreshes happening mid-cycle but not a full year later. Release the Ultra 3 in two colors with a spec bump and new bands. That seems more Apple-like.
Maybe this is "mid-cycle." Not everything is on an annual update cycle.

And launch an updated Apple Watch X with better specs than the Top-of-the-line Ultra model? Would be a pretty weird line up
I agree, Apple X watches whatever they call it, Hope it has better specs since it is the 10th version since the first model.

Apple was like. “Here is the Apple Watch Ultra, it’s the same but more expensive and longer battery life.”
the people were like “gimmy that!”
and now Apple is supposed to be like “we ain’t doing that anymore, keep your money!”

to be fair, if the size switch for series 10 is happening they might actually do something that makes the ultra stand out more. So it’s not completely outlandish.

I for one will be very happy if they bring out a black Watch Ultra, entirely because it means that they might bring out bands for the Ultra with black lugs. I'm using a Trail Loop band on my "regular" Apple Watch, and it's my favorite band in a long time, but I'm not thrilled than the lugs are natural titanium color, on my black Watch.
