I mean, I don’t need this device right now, but I understand that paradigm shifts in UI require the proper primary input source be considered.

For macOS that was a mouse, for the iPod that was a click wheel, for the iPhone that was multitouch, why in the world would the virtual keyboard be the *primary* input experience for the AV family?

Apple went out of their way to describe gaze, voice, and *ergonomic* gestures being the main way to interact. When it comes to short text input that’s voice, long form *they show using a physical keyboard or your Mac’s keyboard for the task.*

Of course a virtual keyboard sucks, and will always suck compared to physical haptic feedback from your fingers.

The very premise of this thread is built on the (willfully) incorrect notion that the virtual keyboard is *core* to the UX of this device, it’s not.

I think you misunderstood what the point is. I don't think Gurman is saying the keyboard is the main way to do anything on it, and what I'm saying is that it would be odd for Apple to come out with a device where basic stuff isn't good enough for now, and my understanding of how this thing works is you control it with your eyes and fingers correct? Maybe I misunderstood when Apple said the main input methods are your fingers, eyes, and voice. Sure you could dictate what you want to type but I can already do that with varying results on several different platforms, Apple's included.

We'll see what happens with this. I suspect the dozen or so reviews that do come out for this thing on YouTube that happen before its launch will be very, very controlled by Apple, and we probably won't get any real honest feedback about it until sometime in late Feb/early March.

I don’t understand, why *wouldnt* you want to just use your actual keyboard and mouse? The virtual one is clearly not meant To be the primary text input method.
Yeah, and when you are at it why wouldn't you want an external monitor so you don't have to profusely sweat with this thing on your head. Oh, and buy some MacBook for longer battery. And now your Vision Pro setup is complete...

I also don't understand why you wouldn't just use a real keyboard. Oculus and Steam VR use real buttons and joysticks on their controllers instead of wafting and pinching. VR sims are better with a real hotas instead of pretending to grip a joystick in midair. Anyone who's used VR knows floating keyboards are only good for a few keypresses when you have no choice but to enter some text or press a hotkey.

People here find every little thing to call the VisionPro a “failure” and no one has even had one in their hands/on their head.
Will it be perfect at everything? No.
Apple will improve over time, and if keyboard usage is deemed to be the bottleneck (which I doubt), it will only get better…

Funny how the tone has changed, from “it’s like the iPhone (as in Apple invented the modern smartphone” to “it’s the dumbest thing on earth”…

Are you under the impression that anyone buying an AVP as a first adopter isn’t already in the Apple ecosystem?

Apple v1s are always like this. There was no copy/paste on the Original iPhone. Apple will improve as they always do over time.

With advent of powerful AI, however, and the prospect of ChatGPT-focused phones on the market, one does have to question whether they were focusing their energies on the right prospect.*

*Typed with thumbs on iPhone 15 Pro Max.

I’m responding to the hot takes in the thread that a bad virtual keyboard is somehow an indictment of the device (and the thing that actually matters here, UX/UI paradigms). You as the OP seem reasonable, but the thread name seems to be bait to the members here that seem to not actually discuss anything here and opt for short retorts and quips instead.

You don't see your paradox, really?

You have been touting the headset as a replacement for computers, and now you yourself are saying that one should use a computer to do real work?...

🤣

I thought this unit was "Pro", what happened to that? Do I need to go to those threads and get those quotes?

except all we are talking about is whether a Bluetooth keyboard is better than a virtual keyboard for extended text input. You probably knew that.

I remember Walt Mossberg reviewing the original iPhone and saying after initially using the on screen keyboard, he wanted to throw the thing out the window. But after a few days, he said he was making fewer errors than his BlackBerry.

I'm not saying this will eventually get to that point, but I'm sure the more you use it, the easier it'll get. Your should be able to write in cursive mid air, that might be easier.

It seems likely that while the VP headset has some very cool tech, Apple’s propensity to leave every product bug infested is likely to turn off even the most optimistic Apple fans.

I fully expect this to be a cool product is a year or three, but by that time, Samsung will come out with an equally technologically advanced headset for about half the price.

Only time will tell.

What I am saying's that nobody normal is gonna wear this thing outside. So, it would be limited to your home so then why would anyone pay this price to have the same thing they have on the Mac and iPhone and sweat in it while having to swap batteries every 1-2 hours. This will go the way of 3D TVs and curved TVs - unless they can substantially and I mean substantially shrink it to fit regular sunglasses which will happen in approximately 30 years. And even then the commands will be very weird as today Siri can't even understand simple one word commands. Every product so far made sense: iPad/tablet - watch movies in bed, read books, draw almost better than on paper, browse web in bed, take it on an airplane, vacation, etc. Watch, tells time, looks great, it is very comfortable, tracks exercises, answer calls, leave iPhone at home, etc, etc. Vision Pro - nothing - nada- zip -zilch.

Forget Samsung, look at what ASUS is already doing TODAY.

Their product is 1,000,000 times more interesting than this stupid VR headset.

I just hope they get the proper publicity, so that this AVP thing can flop indefinitely.

What’s dumb is we need hand controllers for gaming and using keyboard, the quest 3 has it right, it’s not gonna be good just using hand gestures, this device will get a lot of hate when it’s out to the public

What are you talking about? I hate the keyboard on the iPhone. It's a terrible input system. We put up with it because text input isn't the primary use of the iPhone. Just as text input isn't the primary input of the AVP.

Nothing has changed here, at least for me. I never expected the virtual keyboard to be a replacement of an actual keyboard.
iPhone is still Way better than the blackberry and those ridiculous palm pilots or Nokia clunkers with ugly cramped up keys. I type a lot on iPhone when I traveling. May be not write a novel, but I have edited documents. I would want to see what Apple comes up with virtual KB on VP. Every one was freaked out when iPhone launched with virtual keyboard.

I agree. You shouldn't buy it.

Sounds like the iPhone launch story. The iPhone with virtual keyboard isn’t gonna replace those blackberry with real keys. Not saying VP will be another iPhone, just have to see virtual keyboard in action on VP.

I agreee the iPhone is better than all of those options.
