Lightning to USB-C is already a thing such as with the 9th GEN iPad I bought my mother last Christmas. My iPad Air 5 is USB-C. My iPhone 14 is still Lightning, but I have a cable from my iPod Touch I can use for the phone or, what I do usually, is charge my phone wirelessly.

The changeover now really isn’t as sudden as many seem to think. The transition has been going on for awhile. As someone said upthread the change over for iPhone 15 makes it seem more significant because the iPhone is such a prominent product, but chances are many already have USB-C devices so impact of this changeover shouldn’t be a big deal.

Since they already have those too, the net burden is mostly about carrying around 2 cables instead of one until their Lightning stuff finally conks. If they are half & half already, they are already doing this.
And yet with this stupid forced change to USB-C, there are many of us who will STILL be carrying around multiple cables. I don't have time to sit and wait to charge my devices one at a time. Meaning I still need multiple cables, no matter what type they are. This forced change, at least for me...solves absolutely nothing. If anything, it's actually MORE inconvenient since my car doesn't have wireless CarPlay. OR USB-C plugs. So I now have to go purchase another cable. This isn't reducing the number of cables I need. Instead...it's adding to it.

Yes perfect time and opportunity to redesign the Magic Mouse to have a more ergonmic, less flat mouse for those who rather better grip of the mouse. This is all based on the perfect timing of having to remove the lightning port for USB-C so no better time to move that so the consumer/user can charge and use at same time. AND if apple are focusing on gaming this way you can charge and play with zero lag/latency support for additional benefit!

I just take a peek in the bluetooth menu from time to time and when my Magic Mouse is below about 30%, I flip it over before bedtime and let it charge to 100% while I sleep. Then I'm good for another 5-8 weeks. I also have a spare wired mouse in the drawer that can sub in if I ever fall asleep at that wheel.

And if I just can't stand wired in that scenario, flip it over and charge while I take a break to get me through the current day, then leave it charging overnight to 100%.

My guess why it is NOT on the front where some desire it is that that seems like an ideal spot for the so-called dust magnet... practically set up like a vacuum cleaner... with the dust sucker part forward.

Anyone with a little insight would make the exact same “prediction”, but, he gotta publish something…

Apple has already moved the market to pay the former whole iMac 27" starting-at price for the monitor alone. Adding in an entire computer + keyboard + mouse will require an Apple premium on top of the ASD price.
I think your very high price estimate only makes sense if your thesis of a ~27" iMac being specifically a "pro" model is correct.

Otherwise, I think we'd be looking at a price of around $2K for a base model. After all, the base model M1 iMac is only $1300 right now and a non-pro 27" iMac would surely not cost twice or three times that.

The iMac has always sold for a similar price as, or even a bit less than, an equivalent Apple display + a base model Mac Mini -- with the keyboard and mouse essentially thrown in for free.

Right now, for instance, the iMac M1 base model costs $1300. A base model Mini costs $600. So, you're essentially getting the 24" 4.5K Apple display for $700 more -- with mouse and keyboard thrown in for free. Based on the cost of the Apple Studio Display, anybody here actually believe Apple would sell a stand-alone 4.5K display for less than $1000? I do not! (Obviously, elephant in the room here is that the iMac has not been updated to M2, but recent pricing history of other models tells us the M2 update alone will not move the price much.)

We’ve been hearing about the M3 iMac since forever ago and still waiting for it to be released. Sucks that Apple neglects that product line so much.

So...we're just going to ewaste all the perfectly functioning lightning accessories?

Tell me how this is environmentally friendly?

This is stupid. Proponents of the Apple USB-C movement should be ashamed.

This was why I stopped buying Lightning cables a decade ago and hesitated to buy USB-C to lighting cables in 2018.

Now, I am looking for multiport car and desktop fast chargers.

You can’t be serious…
Who do you think you are? John McEnroe? 🤣 Joking aside though, why not? They’ve done it before. The latest M2 Pro and Max MacBook Pros were introduced via a press release and video so it’s quite possible that they could do the same with the next iMac if there are no other major hardware changes.

I fully expect PRO branding and thus PRO & MAX chips in an iMac "bigger" at a PRO-branded price.
We'll see! You could be right but I hope for selfish reasons that you're wrong. The 27" iMac 5K consumer line ran for quite a few years, and the iMac Pro was a short-lived offshoot.

And I see no scenario where it's simultaneously about $2K for ASD or about $2K for ASD with a whole Mac inside + keyboard & mouse.
But the ASD is not $2K. It's $1600. A $400 or $500 premium on top of that to turn it into an iMac would be very consistent with past entry-level iMac pricing. I don't see a scenario where a somewhat bigger version of the existing M1 iMac design (even with an M2 or M3 processor) costs fully $3,000 or whatever -- unless you end up being right about the Pro and Max thing.

Anyway, we're both speculating here -- I hope I'm right simply because I want the more affordable version.

hope they can do something about the airpod max cushions smelling like ass if exposed to sweat lol
They stand up OK to machine washing, btw, or at least mine have. I've run them through a few times, gentle cycle, in one of those little mesh washing bags. Do not put them in the dryer.

Or you can follow Apple's instructions to hand-wash them, which also works fine.

The memory foam holds onto moisture (hence the sweat issue), so after washing them just lay them on top of the grill of a fan pointed upwards and they'll be dry in a few hours.

By that logic we'd still be using this bad boy:

Nobody has to throw away their Lightning stuff immediately. I know I'm not. I'll be living with two cables for the foreseeable future as I continue to use my AirPods Max, Magic Keyboard, Apple TV remote, old iPad Mini, wife's iPhone 13. Actually I'll be living with more than two cables because I have a bluetooth speaker, ereader, and a few other little things that use a cursed little micro USB connector and yet continue to function just fine. Life goes on.

As you said, the lightning accessories are still perfectly functioning. So are the hundred of millions of lightning iPads, iPods and iPhones in circulation across the world. Nobody told you that you have to upgrade. And if you care that much about the environment, it's better to not upgrade at all
