UBM TechInisghts recently performed a teardown of the iPhone 4 and discovered that Apple may have originally planned on including a gyroscope in the iPad first. After examining the iPhone 4 motherboard, they found that the iPad also had an empty slot that accommodate a gyroscope chip (see above).
...UBM TechInsights, has found that the iPhone's 3-axis digital gyroscope is likely slated for the next generation iPad as well. TechInsights senior analyst Steve Bitton said there's an almost-perfect spot (4mm x 4mm); the exact size of the MEMS gyro) for it, located right beside the iPad's accelerometer.
For whatever reason, Apple must have abandoned the plans in the final shipping version of the iPad, though it's reasonable to believe that a gyroscope could make it into the next revision.

This differences between gyroscopes and accelerometers is detailed in this (rather dry) video:

Pretty good move by Apple. Tease the masses with half-ass filled products like the 1st Generation iPad. Then, release something stuffed to the holes with new tech such as the iPhone 4.

Then release the iPad again with stuff it should have had considering what it was aimed to do: 512MB RAM, a front facing camera, and a gyroscope since they're aiming for gaming platforms, then make everyone buy it again.

Pretty much the same scheme they did with the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G.

Bravo Apple, bravo.

Quelle surprise!
Any unused camera connectors in there as well?
;)

So true….
Apple, Inc. have it down to a fine art.

Basically

-I have an iPod touch as of Yesterday

I love the iPhone 4 but I've got bad signal issues.
:(

This is interesting stuff. Another way to think about it: The Wii Motion Plus accessory basically adds a gyroscope to the Wii Remote. The improvement in detailed motion sensing is night and day.

256mb Ram, No Cameras, no Gyro..

Planned obsolescence much?

I honestly don't think that the addition of a crappy webcam and a gyro to the iPad 2 will make it a compelling upgrade at all. In fact if the only things that get added are the three you suggest there, I won't bother upgrading at all.

The iPad is fine the way it is for now.

More like trying to keep the cost down on the first generation iPad or the software for these chips wasn't ready in time for launch.

It is typical hardware design philosophy, as long as there is board real estate, to design in as much hardware as you can to avoid a board turn cost. Then as your product line matures, you put the chips on the board stuffing runs as the software is ready.

The iPad is a hit. Some say only dung throwing monkeys would bitch about it not having features like a gyroscope or forward camera. The small size and large portable screen is enough to sell over a million units in just a few months.

When the software and services are ready, it will come out and some will still spend money and complain. Kinda reminds me of those that dramatize loosing in casinos at Vegas. Deep inside they enjoy the self-given entertainment of this "loss."

Anyway, guaranteed that when iPad 2 comes out next April with all the stuff iPhone 4 has, then iPhone 5 will come out a couple of months later and make iPad 2 look pretty old just like iPhone 4 has done to iPad 1.

Rinse and repeat.

I think that I could keep my iPad for some time and for right now I intend to. A retina display would make me immediately upgrade ( I know the unlikelihood of this).

Where have you been living, under a rock?

Since the Zuse Z3 this is the way computers work: in a few months your brand new computer will be twice as capable and half the price of what you are having now. So you can cry and curse and wait and wait and wait, or you buy a computer when you have the feeling that you need a new one.

But you know that won't be all. My guess is bigger battery, possibly more PPI(a la iphone 4), oh and $100 cheaper!

QFT

Apple's market strategy = carrots for donkeys.

:D

That's great. I hated how accelerometer games are so laggy and it's like playing a game with a bad mouse. I hope the gyroscope will really make motion-based gaming on the iPhone 4 and other iDevices useable.

Wow, WOW - this is incredible! Apple are just doing great these days.... wonderful...

oh by the way, 10.6.4 Server is still a bag of nails, but we won't worry about that because my iPad doesn't have a gyroscope in it.

I would expect nothing else, the big question is when will they wait a year for an iPad revision or do one in time for the holiday buying season. Another question is can they get that high resolution screen on an iPad without a significant price jump? Of all the things released for the iPhone that is not in the iPad it is the screen that could really put it ahead of the competition with a display that would rival print quality.

Nobody should be surprised over this. It seems that the last few product cycles of the iPhone, iPod Touch and now the iPad have us wanting more thanks to sites just like MR. This is not a bad thing and it's a brilliant move from the marketing side. We will always be wanting more and looking to the next features.

except this is different. The iPhone 4 was already in development, and almost finished, when the iPad was released. They COULD have given the iPad everything the iPhone 4 has and waited 2 months to release it if they didn't want to spoil the surprise of the iPhone 4. This wasn't about technology becoming obsolete, this was Apple knowingly giving the iPad tech that was already obsolete by another product they were getting ready to release.

Also, they released the iPad knowing they were moving away from the tapered hardware design of previous iphones/ipod touches only two months later. I think they just wanted to get the iPad out the door before anyone else had their tablets out (the mobile OS kind, not the big full OS type with stylus that have never sold well)

The lack of front facing camera is one of the main reasons i didn't buy this iPad. GPS is second. I want to be able to mount my iPad in the car and use it as a giant navi.

Seriously what I want in the iPad is the iPhone 4, without the phone, and with a larger screen.

Pissed

I'm pissed that the iPhone 4 makes the iPad look old. I'll be even more pissed when the next iPad makes the iPhone 4 look old. I'll be really, REALLY pissed when the iPhone 5 makes the next iPad look old. I'm going to be pissing a whooooooole lot.

how tiny these things have become!

still know how big tey were in the cold-war surface-to-air-missiles: about 20x20x20cm (ok, they could survice over 15 G)
