Yeah a comparison with the BM app would be great
Honestly they’re different. They have overlapping capabilities and sure expand on what stock app can’t do. But BM seems geared towards someone that already knows what they’re going to do and they have a professional workflow they want to plug the iPhone into.

Kino seems more gears towards amature videographers or someone that wants a little more control over video but wants a little help and user friendliness to go with it.

If you open BM app and your eyes glaze over, this may be for you.

It also has some features to teach you more about the process and is more focused on color grading. The only thing I’m not sure about is if the color grading is does it then make it harder to adjust later. I don’t know. It’s a good app. I take premium 1x payment over subscription or free with ads or free with a bunch of random pay walls on each feature. Give me one price let me know what I’m going in for and let’s go.

Yesterday, my parents bought me Kino on my Apple ID for a $10 discounted launch price. After that, I compared the Blackmagic Cam and Kino apps for LUTs compatibility. Unfortunately, I noticed that a free app called Blackmagic Cam has better LUTs compatibility than a paid app called Kino! Both apps were tested on my main iPhone 14 Pro Max, running the current iOS version (iOS 17.5.1). Unfortunately, I didn't have any iPhone 15 models when testing.

Fun fact: 'kino' is the word for 'cinema' in Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian. I'm guessing the developers hail from one of those countries...
Millions of fans of Kino (a still hugely popular underground Russian band from 1980-1990s with Cure-like arrangments) would like to have a word with devs... Generally speaking, "kino" originates from Greek kinein for "to move". Hence, used widely to mean "cinema"

It's astonishing that many here will reject what appears to be an outstanding video camera app with a well thought-out user interface, loads of features, and a great user tutorial because it costs $10. Without even going to their website to check it out. Actually I'm not that surprised.

It’s because the devs have done the bait-and-switch before, and they will again. Halide doesn’t offer more than the stock app, it’s just packaged in a better UI.

Ha, don't fall for it! Their camera app was a single purchase, then they added subscription later to get the features back you already paid for.
I deleted Halide and Spectre for this reason and will never buy another app from them.

If your app is good enough, you won’t need a subscription.

Halide? I assume you mean Kino (the name of the app) or Lux (the company's name).

How do you apply LUTs for viewing (while filming) in the Apple stock app and how many come with it?

Wish I could try before I buy. They do that with Halide.
You can request a refund on iTunes site. I bought it, did not like it at all. Something odd with the manual focus, video recordings started out janky skipping frames, the color presets are so basic they don't do anything to improve the visual. Also there is no tap to focus or expose.

I've been playing with "Moment" camera which does video and photo, tap to focus/tap expose, LUT import, and more but its more expensive for the full purchase

Not only. It's a German noun. Almost every country East/South East of Germany uses kino for cinema. Norway too.

Basically there are 3 major words for cinema in Europe:
1.Cinema (mainly Western EUR because cinéma is French noun)
2.Kino (Central/Eastern EUR up to Ural Mountains and Caucasus)
3.Bioscoop/bioskop (Netherlands/Bulgaria)

Anyway. One-off purchase is worth the try alone.
Awesome. Didn't know it was German too.

Hello,

is it possible with your Kino app to force lens selection?

For example when I choose 3x zoom lens to record video but iPhone decides that light conditions aren't good enough and automatically switch to 1x lens and make digital zoom / crop. This results to horrible image quality and inconsistency during shooting when used lens is switched regularly based on current light conditions. Every app I tried does this. I'm starting to think that CameraKit API cannot override this behavior and it's really frustrating.

Do you have some insight about this feature becoming issue in low light? It's driving me nuts. Thank you.
It does do this! we just give you the lens you ask for, no substitutions :)

For those comments regarding the word 'kino'.

In April, I sent a letter to the Kino (Halide, Spectre) developers offering a pro-bono localisation services for their apps as I strongly believe those apps must be in Ukrainian. The reply I got from their support team representative stated that they were focused on releasing their new app for video (Kino), and they would get back to me when/if they had the capacity.
They have never got back to me though.

By my comment I mean the developers may be from the Eastern Europe (Netherlands, I believe) or wanting to use mnemonic names, but they are not that interested in promotion their apps in, at least, Ukraine.
Mostly we are just a small team of 2 guys and we can think about localization once our apps are out. That being said, our resources are also super limited. We don't have big budgets, so we optimize for localization in our largest markets first. :)
I couldn't work this out from reading the description/marketing copy, but can you 'preview' luts while recording WITHOUT baking the lut into the footage, keeping the footage as ungraded Apple Log (similar to Blackmagic App)?
Yes!

Why iOS 17.0 as minimum requirement?

We use APIs that require iOS 17.

That's... literally not true. In fact, if you bought the app, you not only got to keep and use all those features but we also gave you several years of updates for free. And you still never have to upgrade. To this day! Those users are taken care of, and we have always been proud of that.

I think the problem is most people here have never made iPhone videos in Apple ProRes Log format (available on the iPhone 15).

Without having LUTs available when making videos, what you see on the screen will be color that is all washed out. Which means you have to trust what you are seeing on the screen and that the LUT you apply in post will (hopefully) give you the color space you want.

Kino supplies a variety of LUTs that you can choose from to get whatever color mapping you want *and be able to see the results as you are making your video* instead of video images where color is washed out. That's huge!

You can also get other LUTs from other sources, or make your own, and load them into Kino.

As I said previously, $10 is a bargain for what appears to be a great app. Some, though, will spend $10 on a MacDonalds Happy Meal, and complain that $10 for an excellent app is way too much, and call it a day. Baffling.

It’s sad to see just how negative the comments are here. With every product there are alternatives and they come with a series of pros and cons. Congrats to the Kino team on their launch, as a dev I know just how hard it is to ship. I hope your team finds success, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it fits in for me

People here just seem to have an aversion to paying for anything. It’s completely baffling.

Nice for beginners to toy around. But no anamorphic desqueeze, no tentacle sync support, and baked in LUT's without unaltered LOG backup. It seems to me like a competitor for the REC video app at a cheaper price ( for now), but with a added - limited - LUT feature. I tested both and find the REC app more intuitive, it also lacks anamorphic desqueeze though.
The Blackmagic Cam is aimed at professionals or advanced users.
