Thanks, HB Crew!

I am happily encoding my first 5.1 DVD, Natural Born Killers.

I thought something light and frothy might be appropriate to celebrate Handbrake 0.9.2.

:D

darned heck to HB! darned heck to all you appletv users!

darned heck b/c you're making me want to buy one!!!! :)

but i only have a sony 4:3 TV, but i might do anamorphic or whatever it is.

I know when I play widescreen DVDs, the movies show properly with the bars at the top and bottom and the video is right to both edges so i think i'm good to go. the bummer is that it's component.

maybe i'll spring for a sony bravia rear projection considering they might be going on sale now that sony announced they won't be making any more rear projection models..

hmmm... nah, the wife will never go for it.

until then, i'll happily encode my DVDs and prepare for the inevitable ;)

cheers,
keebler

Looking at all the movies you guys are ripping, I'm not sure its worth the effort for most of my movies considering we mainly have kids movies, home movies and comedies/romantic comedies. Any opinions.

I'm just trying this one. I have too many to consider re-ripping all of them yet. I am really curious to see if the (terrible) HT-In-A-Box unit I have will sound any different. I figured a nice, quiet movie like Natural Born Killers would be a decent test.

imagine being able to sync your mini van with your home media server -

ok kids, choose the movies you want - and then getting your handy car stereo guy to install an ATV in the car. :) its not only about quality, but convenience.

that would be awesome. it would work too b/c you'd just take the a/v connections from inside the van and convert it to component and then whammo! no more discs in the vehicle!

The Car solution is a great way to use the Apple TV. I've done this. There are just a few things you need to be aware of. You will probably want to by an extra power adapter. I take my Apple TV out of the car to update it. The converter I have in my car is only on when the car is on. So I don't want to leave my car on to sync the Apple TV. My power cord for the Apple TV is nice and hidden in the car so I don't really want to move it.

Make sure you keep the power converter in an easily accesible place. My will still draw power even when the car is off. I have to flip the switch manually. It isn't too bad since we only use the Apple TV on long trips. So I just flip it on when I need it.

Everybody needs to try this. It works great!!

See, Keebler? I told you! :D

Handbrake 0.9.1 was awesome and 0.9.2 is even better. Great stuff and thanks to the dev team.

I'm as giddy as a school girl. A new HB, my 1TB drives arrive tomorrow, and I'm getting a Apple TV on Thursday.

Woo.

I thought i read that the new HB version will be able to rip a dvd and save as ATV but play both the ATV and iphone files. is that possible?
thanks

Track 1 and Track 1 Mix

Do I need to change these settings when wanting to encode in 5.1?

Not just yet, you can use the iphone preset and select AAC/AC3 from the codec and all the AC3 track. The iPhone will ignore it.

Or use the iPod High preset and do the same, for a better ATV experience.

Cheers, Ed.

Isn't that a bit premature given that as of MWSF only 20% of the installed OS X user base had upgraded to Leopard?

When all the developers are running Leopard, and the tools are all Leopard, it makes it hard to maintain Tiger support - not worth our effort. And remember, we do this for us, not you the users, you just get to share :)

Cheers, Ed.

A few random comments/responses:

Re: 4:3 and anamorphic

Just because you get black bars and the picture extends to the sides does not mean your TV does anamorphic widescreen. If a DVD player is set to 4:3 Letterbox, widescreen movies will display this way. The TV must be capable of doing the so-called anamorphic squeeze, which will look the same, but have higher resolution. If your set has component inputs, it might work. If not, you're probably hosed.

Re: HB going Leopard only

I have not upgraded to Leopard yet because my dual 800 Quicksilver isn't supported. Yeah, I know there are ways around it, but I'm getting ready to upgrade to an 8-core MacPro, so I'm waiting. In the meantime, I'm not encoding any DVDs yet because they take too long on my computer. And this gets me to my point: I would be willing to bet that most people who have not upgraded to Leopard are running machines that are at least a couple of years old and most are probably not the kind who would wait a half-day for a single encode anyway. I suspect that the vast majority of people who are doing this and own AppleTVs are running Leopard.

Misc

I'm dying to get my new MacPro and start encoding some DVDs to load up, but my present situation won't let me for a while; I'm on an extended business trip (heck, I haven't even had the chance to upgrade to Take 2). When it all comes together this summer, I plan to go to town so I don't have to, uh, go to town...

I've been following this forum for a couple of months while I researched AppleTV and now while I research HB and other aspects, so I'll be smart when the time comes. I ordered my AppleTV on the day of the keynote (pretty much as soon as Steve Jobs made it clear that the device has a future) and I love it. Even my wife loves it. Can't wait to take full advantage.

Agreed

Just tried it out and am very happy with it!

I ripped a video for both AppleTV + iPhone

I did iPhone/ipod touch setting, went into picture settings changes to Anamorphic 706X480 (836 x 480) then changed to AC3+AAC for audio!

It is anamorphic, dolby digital (but AAC will play when playback on iPhone) quality is amazing. This is the best option if you want to play back on both..

Great job HB!
