this is a very welcome update indeed.

most of my dvds have already been converted and i don't plan on re-encoding them to 5.1...but for the remaining rips i have, it will be nice to have the 5.1 option.

i'm intrigued with the eyetv conversion as well and will try it out soon.

one note - one of the fixes in this update is that problematic VOB files are now handled better. seems to work...b/c i previously couldn't convert 3:10 to Yuma (it would get stuck) but it's almost done as i write this. very impressed...almost wish i hadn't bought VH ;)

Bourne Ultimatum re-encoded using :apple:tv preset 2 passes 1st turbo. Much faster on my old XP box - about 2hrs vs 4 before...

The magic double-d came on and my living room HT was shaking like an earthquake had hit!

Thanks HB team :D

Dynaflash: Thanks for everything.

Everyone else: What are the benefits of encoding to M4V vs MP4? Seems like .M4V is specific to the apple eco system but is there any plus aside from that?

Thanks in advance

I am not to familiar with how handbrake works, but isn't this supposed to be mp4 and not m4v? Or are these the same. This is what defaults behind file name after I have selected ATV and the source file.

My understanding is that mp4 and m4v are one in the same. mp4 is a more standardly accepted extension. m4v is more the apple/itunes nomenclature. Maybe somebody else can clarify that better.

Practically speaking, I find that I can take the exact same file, call it m4v, and stream it to my iPhone via HTTP and it will begin playing pretty much immediately. With an mp4 extension, it has to download the entire file before playback begins and it barfs if the file is too large.

Howdy guys, I'm new here, but absolutely love HB and AC3 functionality onto my Apple TV. My only regret is not ripping to mp4... My iphone is lonely since it doesn't like m4v's with AC3 at 1200bitrate!

Anyways, on my windows 2003 core 2 duo 2.2Ghz, I'm ripping at around 1to1 (120 minute movie takes 120 minutes to rip) when it comes to time. I'm considering an 8 core setup to speed things up here.

My question is, if anyone has an 8 core system, can you share how long it takes to rip a movie?

Cool update. Not to sound nagging, but it still doesn't have CSS decryption on it does it? Do you still need to DL Mactheripper to get the DVD from the disc to your HD first?

The Mac version has always had CSS decryption - if anything it is likely to be removed given that there is more to DVD copy protection than CSS. And therefore a commercial product such as MTR is required half the time.

Let MTR fight the running battle against copy protection, not HB.

Cheers, Ed.

Try encoding with both the AAC/AC3 audio tracks, the iphone will use the AAC one and the ATV will use either depending on what you've got plugged in.

The file produced *is* an mp4. Just renamed to m4v (which is apples suffix for an mp4 video file).

Use the iPhone/iPod High preset in HB and then select AAC/AC3 for the audio and you will get a file that will play on both.

Cheers, Ed.

Good to know, I'll go DL them both then! Thanks
