Hmm. 092 crashes when attempting to open Terminator 2 Extreme (last file, #28). 091 opens it just fine. Any ideas?

Is this from a MTR rip or direct from the DVD?

There have been some changes to DVD handling, but should have been for the better.

We are moving away from supporting ripping direct from DVD, given that they tend to be protected, and instead just focusing on the encoding.

Where was the crash, you can see the crashlog in the crash reporter. Go the Handbrake forums and report it there under the bugs section if you have time.

crashes caused by copy protection can not always be fixed, odd that it would work in 0.9.1 though.

Cheers, Ed.

so it is possible to set it this way and do both formats? I;m sorry i guess i'm a bit confused. I will try what u did. my main focus is for the video to be the best for the apple TV. will this do this?
thanks!!

best video for :apple:TV would be to use the :apple:TV preset. The bit rate is higher than the combo method.

I like the sound of that. Copy protection problems should be left to the rippers to sort out IMO. Focus on the encoding.

I encoded an :apple:TV preset and compared to iPhone 1500kbps with equal picture size. There is a noticeable drop in picture quality but it isn't terrible. Top is iPhone, bottom is :apple:TV.

The thing about movies is that they move, static pictures don't tell you that much other than the resolution. What is more interesting is how the picture changes during motion - does it go all blury? Or does it break up into blocks?

The iPod High preset is a good one to use on both as a starting point.

The iPhone one deliberately uses a lower bitrate because of the lower flash size.

When selecting "Audio Tracks" for a DVD and I have the choice between LPCM or DTS, which should I chose. The default was LPCM on Handbrake. Thanks.

Man, this thing is blazing fast. What took me 4 hours before is down to 2. The Handbrake team is amazing.

Change the codec back to just plain AAC, and then select DPLII as the mixdown from DTS.

Only Dolby Digital via AC-3 is supported at present.

So LPCM won't work? I thought I was told to you AAC + AC3 audio.

I am not to familiar with how handbrake works, but isn't this supposed to be mp4 and not m4v? Or are these the same. This is what defaults behind file name after I have selected ATV and the source file.

A few random comments/responses:

Re: 4:3 and anamorphic

Just because you get black bars and the picture extends to the sides does not mean your TV does anamorphic widescreen. If a DVD player is set to 4:3 Letterbox, widescreen movies will display this way. The TV must be capable of doing the so-called anamorphic squeeze, which will look the same, but have higher resolution. If your set has component inputs, it might work. If not, you're probably hosed.

Re: HB going Leopard only

I have not upgraded to Leopard yet because my dual 800 Quicksilver isn't supported. Yeah, I know there are ways around it, but I'm getting ready to upgrade to an 8-core MacPro, so I'm waiting. In the meantime, I'm not encoding any DVDs yet because they take too long on my computer. And this gets me to my point: I would be willing to bet that most people who have not upgraded to Leopard are running machines that are at least a couple of years old and most are probably not the kind who would wait a half-day for a single encode anyway. I suspect that the vast majority of people who are doing this and own AppleTVs are running Leopard.

Misc

I'm dying to get my new MacPro and start encoding some DVDs to load up, but my present situation won't let me for a while; I'm on an extended business trip (heck, I haven't even had the chance to upgrade to Take 2). When it all comes together this summer, I plan to go to town so I don't have to, uh, go to town...

I've been following this forum for a couple of months while I researched AppleTV and now while I research HB and other aspects, so I'll be smart when the time comes. I ordered my AppleTV on the day of the keynote (pretty much as soon as Steve Jobs made it clear that the device has a future) and I love it. Even my wife loves it. Can't wait to take full advantage.

this is a good point. i need to borrow an appletv and try it out first! :)

Does anyone know if the Apple TV automatically selects the 5.1 AC-3 audio track? In iTunes and on the iPhone you can pick which audio track you want, but I haven't seen such feature in the Apple TV.

So my first test didn't work. I selected LPCM (not DTS) and my receiver show DPL still. I don't really understand the AC-3, LPCM, DTS, etc. Are you saying it will only work if I see 5.1 AC-3 when I select the DVD? Thanks.

Yes, it is not compatible with DTS at this time.

I just ripped Monsters, Inc. with the Apple TV setting and selected the 5.1 AAC + AC3 for audio. I don't have an AppleTV but I streamed the file to my XBox 360 and it looked great. I don't think I can tell the difference from the DVD. The file came to about 2gigs in size. I did a 2-pass with a turbo first. I am very happy with this update and I am very tempted to get an AppleTV and start ripping all my DVD's.

What is "Turbo"? I've read it a couple of times in this thread.....

I was having a ton of trouble ripping my Six Feet Under seasons sets past season 1 and my series 5 set of Absolutely Fabulous. This new handbrake release is having no issues (the issues were mainly with ripping from the DVDs I believe, Handbrake would crash before the Turbo 1st pass was finished) and it's encoding a whole hell of alot faster. I'm very happy with it so far.

Only thing I wish Handbrake had was a way to set the file icon so it shows the picture you want from the movie. Or is there another way to do that expecially for iTunes and :apple:TV.

Look at a program called metax ... it downloads the info for you from amazon and fills out the proper tags. Then just import it into itunes and all the info shows up ... in itunes and on the atv.

Actually he's talking about the icon itself. Instead of the OS using whatever image on the file as the default. Other than that MetaX and Handbrake works great together. Take a look at some of the threads here posting how organized users iTunes movie files are. Very nice.

Think of it this way. You finally have a good reason to "upgrade" to Leopard. :)

Yeah, I'd love to - unfortunately the software I need to integrate with my calendar at work (on Exchange) doesn't work with Leopard yet.

I would be willing to bet that most people who have not upgraded to Leopard are running machines that are at least a couple of years old and most are probably not the kind who would wait a half-day for a single encode anyway.

Not necessarily - my MBP will run it fine, but as above I have Tiger-only software I need at present.

When all the developers are running Leopard, and the tools are all Leopard, it makes it hard to maintain Tiger support - not worth our effort. And remember, we do this for us, not you the users, you just get to share :)

Cheers, Ed.

Fair enough. :)

Hopefully it won't be too much of a problem for me as I'm looking at getting a Mini to run as a media server/file server in the near future, so that'll have Leopard anyway.
