Handbrake: I LOVE THIS MACHINE! (Thread 2)

Ok... so I just had to post a new thread... in my last thread, folks said I should rip right from DVD and encode later in Handbrake.

Well... I'm doing just that through VMWARE in Windows (a better ripper I think than MTR)... and...

Look at this:

I'm so smitten with this damn machine...

I can rip a DVD in less than 5 minutes in VMWARE while ripping/encoding another in Handbrake in OS X!!!!

WOW!!!!

I'm sorry... I'm just beside myself with the power of this thing :)

HAHA! It would make me feel poor... :) I'd have had to eat peanut butter for years... and I HATE Peanut butter haha

But yes, it would be nice if they "Magically" appeared in my machine one night...... lol

Tell us more about why you think so.

Because I've tried MTR... and it's nice... but it has issues ripping certain types of disks... and the same disk rips about 50% faster (on average) in DVD SHRINK via VMWARE than it does natively on MTR.

Fair enough? LOL

Isn't that kinda slow? I was hoping for better performance. Man, am I going to be dissapointed when my Mac Pro arrives! I had a 2.8 Dual Xeon rig that I built back in 2005 that used to rip DVD in 7-15 minutes.

Or, am I to understand that you ripped, then encoded to another format? Is that the reason for the slow down?

If that's the case, how long does it take to just do a 1-to-1 rip? (As in, then burn with Toast?)

I know this is completely off topic, but how do you customize your desktop icons like the ones for your different drives?

Super Easy.

Find the drive icon you want (google OS X Icons)...Right click on drive icon you like... choose get info... click on the little preview picture... copy (apple + c)...

Find the drive icon you want to change on the desktop... right click on drive icon you want to change... choose get info... click on the little preview picture... paste (apple + v)...

Done :)

That's probably because you're using the old version of MTR. If you want to get the new version you have to donate on the MTR forums. The new version is possibly the best dvd ripping app ever.

Norbit and Finding Nemo? haha.

My machines have usually been terrible for handbrake. The last time I ripped a movie to MP4 (SuperBad) it took 4 hours on an 867MHz G4.

36 minutes is downright ridiculous...:D

Same application open twice?!

Ripping / Encoding 2 Instances... no slow down from running just one :)

Now if I can only get a couple of incredibly fast ripping-speed DVD drives...

I LOVE THIS MACHINE :)

Alright, I know I'm new at this so go easy on me... but how do you have the same application [Handbrake, in this case] open twice?! Seems handy...

THANKS!

Z

Or you can do it from Terminal by running the executable directly. Eg. if you already have Safari open, open up Terminal and run /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari to get a new instance.

oh and also, "ripping to the HDD first then encoding" - is that short hand for set handbreak going on 'normal' then when the file is done use something like iSquint to put it in iPod format?

No, he means using a program like MacTheRipper to rip the DVD to his machine first. Basically putting the dvd stuff onto the computer in its original format. You would then have Handbrake select that DVD folder as its source, then encode like normal. This essentially removes the loss in speed due to disk read while encoding.

Actually, that was really pretty slow due to running Windows XP and ripping a disc at the same time.

Check out this picture (time to render and FPS) when HandBrake is the ONLY app running and when encoding straight from the hard drive!!!

Encoding times

:D

Yeah, its interesting when I used the Octo 2008 Mac Pro at the Apple store they did a dvd rip of the had Die Hard 4 which from start to finish was quoted as about 25 minutes so not to sure if its utilizing all available cores.
:D
