This is interesting. Glad I gave in and bought a Samsung S20 Ultra 5G. Apple is getting wasted in the cell phone market. Much like Windows has wasted macOS .

Is it really such a surprise? Delayed purchases while waiting for the 12 range. Even some turning to alternatives due to late 12 release.

But to get a real picture, look at the figures after first quarter 2021. No, not saying I know what they will show, but they will be more illuminating.

Sure, if you speak like that, then any camera will do the job. You don't need an iPhone 12 to do that.

Correct, and a very astute comment.

In response to your, "Still those who are interested in real photography should stick to real cameras.":

The photo of the boat in San Francisco Bay was made with an iPhone 6+, a real camera. And the photo of the stranger I hit up for a portrait on the street in San Francisco was made with an iPhone 5, another real camera.

Real photography, real cameras.

The photo below at the Sutro Bath ruins in San Francisco was also made with a 6+.

Which also shows it’s more about the photographer than the camera, within reason obviously.

I love these comparisons. The people that get the regular 12 will intentionally ignore the “pros” of the Pro model and downplay those features entirely. The people that get the 12 Pro will somewhat exaggerate the benefits of the Pro model vs the Regular 12.

Polished stainless steel looks more premium to most people, also adds a certain feel. Sure, you may not care about any of that, but you can’t deny those who genuinely value those aesthetics/feel in the hand.

The Pro has 2 more gigabytes of RAM. Do I need to say anything? I’m sure a 12 user will tell me how that’s actually a bad thing and 4GB is plenty. It’s still empirically better. Anecdotally, I am already seeing a benefit of the additional RAM.

Screen brightness is better on the Pro.

The Pro had an Ultra Wide lens. The 12 does not.

The Pro has better video recording capabilities.

Pro starts out with 128 vs 64.

There might be more I forgot, but I don’t see why iPhone 12 buyers have to dismiss all the aforementioned differences. They might not matter to you, but the 12 Pro is literally better. If you’re happy with your 12, great! You don’t have to let everyone know why you can’t “understand” why anyone would get the Pro over the regular 12.

They're just trying to rationalize their purchase one way or another.

What do you mean "trying"? I have succeeded. :)

Getting the 12 Pro so I don't regret not getting it.

No regrets here as well. The 12 Pro Max was much too big for how I like to use a phone.

I see you're coming from a 6s so the difference will be huge.

Years ago, I had a work iPhone for a while - think it was a 6 Plus. Was lovely to use in many ways, but simply wouldn't fit in most pockets safely.

Here's a tip... Apple's silicon cases are excellent in being very grippy against fabric. When I make photographs of people on the street in San Francisco I'm a bit concerned about someone coming up on me and jacking my phone out of my t-shirt pocket and running off with it.

With the silicon case that pretty much makes it impossible being so grippy. Pulling it out at any kind of angle is just not going to happen. Also bending over to pick something up or to tie my shoe, my phones with that case have never slid out. And yet it comes easily out of my pocket pull it straight up when I need it. Have been using them since my 6+, and possibly with my 5s (don't remember).

Yeah, Apple's silicon case is way overpriced. But it works so well and offers one less thing I have to think about when I'm out making photos.

I live in a very different place! I'm more concerned about it slipping out of my pocket and down between car seat and centre console box. :)

Too heavy? Significantly easier to handle ? You better either choose your words more carefully, or you should work out a little bit more if you think 12Pro is heavy and people can’t handle it. I’m 75 years old and I got the Pro and I don’t find it heavy for me at all, nor significantly difficult to handle.
I find it too heavy and I'm 51 years old. However, it has nothing to do with your age. It's too heavy for me because when I place it in my inside suit coat pocket (the most convenient and preferred place to carry my phone), it pulls down so much that it changes how the coat hangs. Instead of hanging properly, it creases sloppily.

I think I am missing your comparison!

The iPhone 11 was, and is - come to think of it, seven grams heavier than a 12 Pro. 32 grams heavier than a 12.

625 nits vs 800 “only matters under direct sunlight” - only? Are you guys never using your phone outside ever?

“Same” 1200 nits for peak HDR brightness - are you guys using your device as a tv most
Of the time?

For me this is a biggy. That’s almost a 30% difference in real world use

I own an iPhone Xs (5.8" size). I have not planned to upgrade my phone this cycle, although I have not ruled it out. I did handle the iPhone 12 (6.1" size) at a Verizon store, and I was absolutely amazed how much lighter that phone felt versus my Xs. The light weight and how it felt made me to want to at least consider upgrading. Also the 6.1" iPhone 12 appeared to be virtually the same size to hold as my current iPhone. My wife's iPhone 11 feels larger and heavier, despite the same screen size. I am waiting until the 5.4" iPhone 12 Mini comes out before I made a final decision whether to upgrade and if so, what to upgrade to. I do have a strong preference for small and light phones.

But I'd really like to see a wooden iPhone.

Obviously not the innards. But the casing. Even if it ended up being a bit thicker.

Some timbers are very tough. For example, I believe that maple is used for the floors of London underground trains. (Or was?)

Though I'd want to know any timber didn't contribute to deforestation.

Wood can be a gorgeous material, so many different types, with grains and colours.
I can't see the actual body of a phone ever being made of wood as it's too unpredictable for anything mass market, unless it was a wood-composite material.

Realistically it's going to be a thin framed phone, like the new iPhone 12's and then have a wooden case that it will slip into. Could look really nice :)

Well, they made Mosquito aircraft out of wood! :)

Yes - lots of glue needed.

But I can imagine CNC cutting from some of the very tough woods - and a sort of skeleton phone that you can drop into it.

I got the 12. I never owned a Pro. I owned 6s, 7, XR, and now the 12. I never even had a double camera let alone a triple camera I see often! The 12 is a considerable step up from XR. The XR was beautiful with the Retina and the salesman even told me not to bother with the XS. I said what?? Since when does a salesman tell me to get the lower model?? I did it and learned to love it, but the 12 is awesome. The trade in program was ok and perhaps this is the better trade in program than previous ones. Maybe not, but I love the OLED Super Retina screen. Perhaps late to the party on better tech.

Had the 12,was sick of apps reloading so bought the Pro.

its heavier and i hate that, but 6gb DO make a massive difference for people like me,who wants their apps stay in the memory.
