So you can replace the harddrive? What if you want a better performing one? A larger drive? What if it dies? You'd be able to replace it yourself.

I'd love to see some gaming benchmarks on the 27". I have a hard time imaging the 4850 being able to drive games at the resolution with acceptable frame rates.

No you take it to the Apple Store and if you worry about that then you need to get AppleCare for the iMac.

No matte display!!

Why is there no option to get a matte display? I do NOT buy a new iMac with glossy display, no!!!

yeah!

i just ordered a 2 x 27" iMacs with the i7 and 16GiB RAM ... one for home and one for office.

i'll try wall-mounting one of them for a TV and using the other for the main office computer.

kinda pricey though ... about 3600€ each ... ugh

Well, you were stupid for buying the ram from apple..

total height of 27"

I have a headroom limitation at my home office; permanent shelf over my desk. Looking at the new Mac specs gives the width/height of the 21 and 27" screens but leaves out the total height including the base. So, I can't determine if the 27" will fit. I'm 100 miles from nearest Mac store and not sure the 27 is in the stores yet. I don't need the bigger screen but would like to take advantage of the i5/i7 chips.

Would I be at a big disadvantage getting the high end 21 inch (3.33 & 8 GB memory) insofar as Snow Leopard really is designed to function best with the newer processors? I mostly do research on the web, e-mail and some photos. Seems as though the core 2 duo is on the way out. Looking to keep the iMac for 4-5 years. I'm coming over from a Dell desktop and can't wait.

Just got bck from my local store and all the new products look good. Finally Apple has quality display panels across the entire product line. The 27" iMac is ridiculously big/wide and i didn't really like it...prefer 24" but I guess they had to make room for the i5/i7s

The mouse is typical Apple...looks good but ergonomics still leave something to be desired, it clicks too easily and no more expose/dashboard buttons. Overall looks good on your desk but using it...

MacBook looks better than ever but also a fingerprint magnet. Display is miles better and the keyboard has a better tactile feel than even the pro models

Overall...good updates but nothing REALLY wowed me except maybe the i5/i7 options but also simultaneously turned off by the 27" case upsell needed and lack of at least an i5 option in the 21" models which is a more 'normal' size

Very solid updates! If this is what happens when a big Windows release is pending, then I can't wait for Windows 8! ;)

Being able to keep the iMac as an external monitor in a few years when the machine dies/is obsolete is a nice plus. I wonder if you can use it as both target monitor mode and target disk mode at the same time?

I think the biggest surprise of all in the updates is that people here are generally positive about them!

This is the first time in recent memory that I can think of everyone actually liking all the updates! :apple:

theoretically would you be able to run 2 new imacs side by side using one as an extended display only? (cost effectiveness aside of course - a boy can dream can't he?)
I was thinking about attaching a Mac Pro to the iMac. You could get the low-end 27" iMac for your day-to-day stuff and have the Mac Pro for your business. If that is too much then connect a Mac mini to the iMac.

The option that should be there, matte screen, is not.

Here's what the new iMac SHOULD look like...

Was referencing the MacBook.

Yes, but as the Steve said, FW is dead at the consumer level. The harsh reaction from the masses is that FW is very much alive at the pro/prosumer level. So Apple is at last removing FW from the correct model class. I'm ok with this if it reduces costs, as it should allow Apple price flexibility in the future. What is disappointing about the MacBook is that Apple did not bring the price down a notch.

For consumers:
Windows 3.1 -> Windows 95 -> Windows 98 -> Windows ME -> Windows XP -> Windows Vista -> Windows 7

I know what you mean but calling it "Windows 8" seems a bit unlikely at this point - who knows, Windows 2011, Windows MMXI, Windows XT, Windows 8??? Maybe there's a big "wheel 'o names" that gets spun when a new Windows version comes out.

I can't believe that they haven't put a vesa option on the 21". I have an original G5 Imac 20", which has been sitting on my wall for the past few years, and is now starting to look old. I was hoping that I could replace it with the 21", but it looks like a no go for now.:(
VESA is only ever available on their biggest model. The G5 had a 17" and a 20" so 20" had VESA. This one has 21" and 27", VESA is on 27".
A quick search on newegg comparing processor specs to the iMac specs would lead me to believe these actually are desktop processors.
Of course they are the mobile i5 and i7 (Arrandale) aren't out yet, don't reach those frequencies and are dual-core

If they went all-black, the screen would need to be centred vertically. The Apple logo probably would need to be slightly more subtle, but other than that, I'd like one!

Touch Windows? (reflecting the multi-touch direction..)
Windows Xtreme? (appealing to younger demographic).
I Can't Believe It's Not Windows?
Hey! It Looks Like You're Naming a Windows OS?

No idea, I just love that a little competition pushes Apple to release very solid updates like this.
