Is the 21.5" an IPS display? It is sorta disappointing that Apple got rid of the "perfect" for me sized 24" iMac. I have a 24" LED ACD, that I connect to my MBA, but I was really close to getting a 24" LED iMac when it was released today... too bad the 24" didn't happen although LED and larger iMacs happened. I also don't know about going 16:9. I really liked how Macs always had 16:10. It seems obvious that Apple is preparing to CAVE on BluRay. I suspect Apple decided to wait to include BluRay in all Macs at the same time when the MBP/Mac Pro are updated next. It just seems like Apple needs to wait until it can offer BluRay in ALL Macs. I suspect a March 2010 Arrandale update with BluRay appearing in all Macs.

Both are IPS. Probably E-IPS rather than the existing H-IPS, so lower quality, but probably nothing to be concerned about.

Oh boy, Apple drops FireWire again.........

The new iMac has a Firewire 800

The apple press release states "The new iMac line, starting at $1,199, is the fastest ever with Intel Core 2 Duo processors starting at 3.06 GHz, and Core i5 and i7 quad-core processors for up to twice the performance".

No sight of the term 'mobile' in either Core 2 Duo or i5/i7. Guess the debate continues until someone actually opens the box and looks what is inside

They are the desktop models.

Is this new iMac Apple's first foray into wall-mounting? I'm intrigued. I also wonder if wall-mounting is step one of some grander plan. Hmmm.

Wall mount + 27" screen + video-in = Media Center PC...

At least that is what is smells like to me.

Monitor height adjustment

For it being "most basic" of functionality, it's interesting to note that of 4 different LCD monitors I own at home, 3 of them have no height adjustment either. (Only one that does is an older 24" Dell display that cost upwards of $750, 3 years ago, as the refurbished price!)

Honestly, I get your point ... but at the same time, I think the vast majority of computer users get by just fine with the standard height they build these monitors and iMacs at, on their stands. It's all based on the assumption that you have a standard-height computer table or desk you're using it on. (Yeah, most of those aren't adjustable either.) If a user is a little taller or shorter, the ability to "tilt" the display is usually sufficient to handle those differences.

It's 2009... And despite all it's designers and billions of dollar, Apple can't engineer even the most basic ergonomic functionality into their monitor or their AIO dekstop computer - the ability to adjust the height of the display.

I'm really surprised the white macbook seems chubbier than before. I thought the rounded edges would make it look even slimmer than before?

The input doesn't support sound, though. that would have been bad ass.

I'm guessing your not very technical for making this comment - first of all it has and Audio In "mic port" and it is pretty easy to convert the rca audio to an 1/8th" port. then do a pass through to the speakers in the OS, windows does this built in (mac osx might need a third party not sure though, feel free to chime in if you have done this on a mac, i usually do this through my gaming pc from my xbox 360 so i can control the overall sound from my keyboard) and to make things even easier most people use external speakers anyway which is even easier to get plugged into and you get way better sound quality.

Beautiful objects, we'll see about the quality...

Even though I am a hard-to-please customer, I have to admit that these new products look stunning. I love the mouse, the remote control and as a former CrackBook owner, I even like the plastic MacBook a lot. The iMac also looks nice. For the first time for a long time, I am thinking about getting a desktop Mac. Shame about the lack of matte screen on these and about the lost Firewire on the MacBook.

I was hoping for a keyboard with a glass trackpad, but I am not disappointed. I wasn't expecting so many new things. But since the departure from Macworld, it was obvious that Apple wanted to dictate its own schedule.

My only worry would be with the quality. I ALWAYS burnt myself with first generation hardware. Perhaps the iMac would be relatively tested as it is not a major upgrade. But would the fans run constantly? Would there be excessive heat and CPU whine?

I am just chatting with a friend of mine. He will get one of these iMacs for christmas. Merry Christmas!

Great minds think alike here.

Is this new iMac Apple's first foray into wall-mounting? I'm intrigued. I also wonder if wall-mounting is step one of some grander plan. Hmmm.

I have to wonder myself. This rev I kinda dismiss as not solving some of the issues I had with the old one. However if I look at my needs differently this could be an excellent media center Mac to work in conjunction with a larger screen TV. VESA mounting is huge here as is the ability to take input from other sources.

It does make one wonder if Apple has something up their sleeves.

On a side note the new iMacs are more visually appealing if I do say so. The enhanced processor and RAM make it more viable for workstation and pro usage. I just wish they had another hard drive bay or as a compromise two Giga Ethernet ports so we could hit a RAID device. Another compromise would have been a SSD for boot and a conventional disk for data. In other words the product is getting a mixed response from me. In some ways it is an excellent upgrade.

Display Adapters & i7 Upgrade Question

I'm intrigued by the new video-in option, but can't find the adaptor for it. Anybody know the details?

Can't these be used?
http://store.apple.com/uk/search?find=displayport+adapter&mco=MTA4MTg3ODg

On another note, I dabble with FCP and Photoshop and over the course of the lifetime of my next computer will probably do more and more design work. Anyone have any thoughts on whether the upgrade from i5 to i7 on the 27" is worth £160?

A different way of looking at this.

......
I was hoping for a keyboard with a glass trackpad, but I am not disappointed. I wasn't expecting so many new things. But since the departure from Macworld, it was obvious that Apple wanted to dictate its own schedule.
To me this is more about the market dictating the schedules. Think about it. Apple debuts the vastly improved MBP at the beginning of the back to school shopping season and generates fantastic sales. Then the debut the consumer low end machines practically at the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. To me this is targeted marketing of products at times when money is flowing freely for those products.

I'm not a big fan of the iMacs, either this generation or past, but one thing is clear to me Apple is going to sell a lot of them this quarter.
My only worry would be with the quality. I ALWAYS burnt myself with first generation hardware. Perhaps the iMac would be relatively tested as it is not a major upgrade. But would the fans run constantly? Would there be excessive heat and CPU whine?
Lucky for me my bank account won't allow for a rev one of this generation. ;)

Given that you will always have the possibility of rev one issues. That pretty much happens on any item of reasonable complexity. Given that the question then becomes how bad will it be.

As to the Fans or heat issues it is going to exists if the i5 and i7 are indeed desktop chips. Honestly thought I'd rather have a little fan noise form time to time than rather having to wait on my PC. My hearing is also bad so i don't really care anyways. The good thing here is that you have options.

What I would be very concerned about is thermal throttling of the CPU which can kill performance on i series chips. We won't know what is up until some benchmarking gets done. Hopefully Apple did their homework here. If we are lucky they might of worked a deal with intel for specially binned processors that run a few watts cooler than the average. Even five or ten watts would make a huge difference.
I am just chatting with a friend of mine. He will get one of these iMacs for christmas. Merry Christmas!

I suspect that will be heard countless times this holiday season. For many people the faster i series machines will be an excellent upgrade or even better an introduction to the world of Mac.

Still not an XMac, not even close.

What can I say? The iMacs were ALREADY the best desktops on Earth...these new models simply extend the lead, representing the most powerful, beautiful, technologically advanced and eco-friendly desktops in the planet.

There is simply NO COMPARISON with the rest...thank you again, Apple, for presenting us with such astounding launches...

MS IS ABSOLUTELY DEAD. AND SO IS DELL.

How are the new iMacs for intensive music programs?

I am deciding on a new desktop powermac, Nehalem or next years Gulftown.
Would the new iMac be just as good for music recording such as East West, Vienna Symphonic Instruments, MACH 5, Digital Performer and Logic? Would have to probably fully load it with max. RAM. Thanks

The 27" looks great!

Multiple reasons.

Why on earth would you want that?
  1. Mechanical harddrives are one of the highest failure rate items in a PC.
  2. Capacity demands grow every year.
  3. Technology continues to move forward, so much higher capacity hard drives are always around the corner. The solution to the capacity demand is to get a bigger newer hard disk.
  4. SSD technology continues to adavance also and for some applications will be come very cost effective in the near future as prices drop.
  5. The economy is bad and DIY is one way to deal with lower incomes. For the most part there is nothing difficult about hard disk upgrades or replacements for repair. That is if you can get to the drive in the first place.
  6. Faster drives lead to a much more responsive Mac.
  7. For the most part you get grossly over charged for a drive replacement. Well maybe that isn't right as the guy has to earn a wage. The difficulty in replacing a iMac drive often means labor is significantly more expensive than on just about any other machine made.

This is my short off the top of my head list. You should not underestimate the importance of serviceability even if you don't do the servicing yourself.

Now that's what I call zealous advocacy, counselor. Namaste.

Thank you, Sir. In fact, today's iMac updates constitute a giant leap over any wannabe competition...these desktops are simply FANTASTIC. Now I need to find a reason to sell my wonderful iMac 24" and get one of these...or just buy the 27" one and give the 24" to my still-PC-using girlfriend...
