Is this new iMac Apple's first foray into wall-mounting? I'm intrigued. I also wonder if wall-mounting is step one of some grander plan. Hmmm.

Interesting thought. I'm really sold on the wall-mount idea. For a 27" screen, it doesn't make much sense to leave it on your desktop.

If video in works with a cheapo hdmi --> mini dp adapter... nice way to hook up your PS3/HD cable Box/whatever to your new iMac :)

Target Display Mode

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME THE LINK FOR THE Target Display Mode thingy... this is HUGE for me

Maybe, but they need to stick with the terms of their warranty.

Macbook....hmm...they really need back to aluminium enclosures. They look so cool and professional.
iMac's; that was good update. New mouse...well I suspect will be as useless as mighty mouse but as always looks cool.
Time capsule....its a LAUGH!!!!! They update nothing apart from speed but that is simple cover story for their faulty power supply module. Now I am sure they replaced it by now. Its outrages that apple washing their hands from that by 1 year warranty. LAUGH!!!! I am Apple fan but this is make me feel a bit like second class citizen.

You are right to feel bad about the power supply issue, but wrong to expect the to extend the warranty coverage beyond what the terms are already. It just sets them up for future problems.

Frankly this is where a class action suit may do more good. it allows the user to claim a bit of cash for the short life span of the equipment and it keeps Apple from having to break its warranty.

In any event I was actually looking at a time capsule purchase and then I started to hear all these stories about the power supply failing. Since I know a thing or two about power supplies that stopped me cold in my tracks. By the way I doubt the problem is heat as many have guessed at but rather caps that did not perform to expectations. Over the years I've fixed a number of industrial power supplies by simply swapping out the caps as they do have a limited lifespan. Usually though a power supply last years before the caps go bye bye.

As to the mouse I will have to check it out in a couple of weeks. Of the items updated I have to think the Mac Book got the best update. The iMac being a close second. As for the Time Capsule I think you are right, it was mostly about fixing the power supply.

In any event I waiting for tear downs from the usual online sources.

Thank you, Sir. In fact, today's iMac updates constitute a giant leap over any wannabe competition...these desktops are simply FANTASTIC. Now I need to find a reason to sell my wonderful iMac 24" and get one of these...or just buy the 27" one and give the 24" to my still-PC-using girlfriend...

Agree with you completely. This is the best Mac-focused update since the Intel transition. Yes, Apple still makes computers. Kick-ass ones, at that.

For you, I would suggest the second option above. That way you get to improve both your conjugal and computing situations. ;)

Wall mounting has been a (quiet) option on the largest screened iMac's going back to the iMac G5. The smaller screen versions the iMac has never had the option. I believe it's a VESA 100x100 pattern using a special bracket apple sells on it's online store. The new 27" model might use a different one. If you want clean lines it's great. I have a ton of stuff plugged into my iMac. Since I won't be running cables through the wall to "do it right" I'm happy with it on my desk. Have people forgot what it was like to run a 21" CRT (or dual 21" CRT's) on a normal sized desk? No free space at all!

As for hard drive upgrades. I suction cup removed my screen and replaced my 1st gen Alu iMac's 320 drive with a 1TB model. Not super easy, but not really that hard either. Getting ready to swap that out with a 7200 WD Black 2TB once the prices drop a bit. Probably need to blow out some dust anyway.
The point is, you will be able to replace the drive in your new iMac once iFixit rips one apart and posts those simple easy to follow directions on how to do it.

After looking at the new Macbook manual. It looks like Hard Drive, Ram, and Battery are all user replaceable. Granted swapping out the battery would be a pain every time, but at the end of it's life cycle you can do it yourself and save some cash.

I'm anticipating a full review on just the Video input of the iMac. I want to know a few things:

1)Can I have the iMac on doing things in the background while I have my macbook pro plugged in using the iMac as an external monitor?
2)Can I use it when the iMac is turned off as an external monitor?
3)Can I plug (using adapters) a PS3 or cable box?
3a)how would either of the above handle the resolution?

This is genius. And cheap. A 27" monitor (decent) can run upwards of $1000. for $500 extra you get a decent PC to run OS X, windows, or linux in the background while using the display for a current machine. I'm looking for a 24" monitor for my programming and occasional video editing. Looks like I may try to find a way to make $2000 before the end of the year to get one of these 27" iMacs.

Certainly one of the better updates if this is what you are looking for.

Overall, very solid updates. They've really been listening to customers... I mean, who could've predicted that Apple would allow the 27" iMac to be used as an external display? How freaking many threads have we had about "So, um, can I like use my iMac as a, um, display?"
Yeah not bad but where is video in on the smaller model? On the bigger model the one thing missing is a second Ethernet port to go to a media server or disk array.
Or the Mac mini with SL Server. That was definitely out of left field, but greatly appreciated. I'm really excited about it.
It won't cut it as a media server but I can see lots of uses for it. Especially in a network of machines that with one acting as a backup server. I've already mentioned elsewhere a few ideas including use as a server for source code for small development teams.
On a side note, Apple has dropped FireWire from its 13" MacBook again. I guess it's okay because it's on the 13" MacBook Pro?

I'm extremely mixed when it comes to FireWire. It is a great technology hobbled by a crappy physical port. Hopefully by the time I'm in a position to buy Apple will have Light Peak built into iMacs and likewise somebody will be selling a disk array to connect to that port.

He asked about the imac, not the macbook.

Oops, apologies. Well looking from the iMac manual, it does not seem to be user replaceable.....at least as far as warranty and Apple care is concerned.

Just wondering it myself...what is the real DIFFERENCE in terms of performance between the Core i5 and the Core i7? Is the i7 worth its price? Thanks!

The Core i7 has hyperthreading, 4 physical cores, but shows 8. I believe the i5 doesn't have hyperthreading, so it's just 4 physical cores. Unless they changed the sockets, the i5 and i7 use different sockets. (LGA1156 and LGA1366 respectivly) I doubt Apple made 3 different motherboards for this refresh, so probably one for the C2D version and one 1156 version for the i5 and i7 versions. I've read there are new i7 chips that work in the 1156 socket.

i5's also have some additional stuff vs the i7 but I honestly never really looked into them so someone else will need to elaborate on that.

I was curious about this listing in the Tech specs for the new iMac. Anyone know if this is a new product or is it referring to an existing one?
