Amazing

It looks like a great device for traveling or casual web browsing. The added bonus of iWork was a surprise!!

I getting one as soon as it's available!! No ... I think I'm going to get 2 of them!! ;)

Cheers.

Aside from multitasking, which I expect in a software OS update, I have no complaints. I see people yammering on about it not making calls, or being a full-fledged computer. I guess they missed that HUGE segment where Steve explained EXACTLY how this device was IN-BETWEEN those two functions. And a webcam? Why? So you can skype in video on a train like a d-bag? Save that stuff for a full computer, where it belongs.

So, you are saying that we have to be excited because Apple produced a crippled netbook. Keep in mind that x86 (PC) based tablets will have everything iPad has and so much more (real OS, real CPU, SSD, Flash and slots for flash cards etc.)

The iPad is lame! I had higher ->(realistic)<- expectations for this device but it fell short. At least a crappy netbook can multi-task, access Hulu, and videochat among other things:confused:. What a waste of hype! Just one question Steve....how was this revolutionary:confused:? Not being a Apple hater, because I own more than enough of their products, but this device is nothing but a blown up version of my iPhone. I truly think the only people that are gonna get this are people that don't own a touch/iPhone, or Apple fanboys that want to show off their new product in Starbucks /Airports/Any public place. This is just a preview of the let down that wil be the 4th gen iPhone. I think SJ spoke too soon when he praised this aluminum pos!
:(:apple::(
To each his own but I'll steer clear of this. I hope os4.0 will add multitasking and some new "revolutionary" way to navigate this without 200 finger strokes or my jail-breaking.

btw...I wonder what potentially helpful apps will they block from seeing the light of day on this thing?

yawn yawn yawn.... whine whine whine. Let me know how that netbook works for e-reading, textbook replacement, etc... and general tactile quality? Ah yeah, that's right... everyone who runs around with a netbook TRIES to treat it like a fully functional machine, which it, also, is not. As for apple keeping control over their dev process? Boo hoo, it's called quality control, something many MS devs could and should exercise from time to time.

It's a media consumption device...

As far as I can tell, the iPad is for reading and replying to email; browsing the web and ordering stuff from the app/tune/book/movie store then listening/viewing those things; playing some games.

Without an actual camera, clearly video chat / conferencing is out, but I don't think this is a device for business people;

Multitasking will arrive, but be careful what you wish for. THe processors and memory are not that speedy, and having a bunch of apps spinning away in the background will eat your battery and slow down whatever you have in the foreground; better would be a quick app swap (suspend an app, but keep its context when you switch).

What's mostly missing for me:

note taking, until an app arrives for the book reader, then I can type notes in and "select" stuff for highlighting;

built in external memory port so I can look at documents and especially photos and video that don't have to be stored on the device itself. A movies is a few gigs, and a few of those fill up the 64GB in a hurry. The doc connector with the camera read attachment may be useful to a third party app in this regard; sure would be nice to plug in a SDHC or USB memory stick and temporarily move a document or video to itunes/iWork directories for use. I have a fist full of promo USB memory sticks and I could put 'em to good use.

Maybe there's a way to use the doc connector to plug in an external DVD player to make this a travel movie machine. If I want 20 or 30 movies for the kids, etc. on a trip, DVD is still the most economical way to go.

Oh, and no flash: too many web sites use it to ignore it (Facebook, MySpace, et al).

Os 4.0

One thing I have been thinking about is that OS 4.0 may have some surprises for us ... sorry if someone has already said this as I don't have time to read all 150 posts. Maybe the multitasking and flash support are part of that upgrade.

My bigger question is what will the sweet spot be for sales of the various models. Had there been a front facing camera and SMS functionality I could see the 3G models flying off the shelves, but do those of us with a MB or MBP and an iPhone need another mail/web device for $30/month.

Also, and I know I am not alone here, but who didn't see this data price coming a few weeks ago when AT&T combined unlimited talk with unlimited data, saving the consumer ... yep ... $30 a month.

I have a better idea. I'll just buy a cheap win7 netbook and I'll be doing EVERYTHING that the ipad can (except go into the app store, big loss I know) and them some.

It's an old idea, Windows netbooks have been around for 15 years.

If you want to know were the improvement is:

-battery life
-instant-on
-battery life
-multitouch
-extra-thin form factor
-designed from scratch for portability with speed to spare vs shoehorning a large OS into a small form factor with the thing running at full tilt all the time
-battery life
-a user interface suited for that screen size

Yup, and a small version of a REAL OS, which has done well enough to limit them to manufacturing and freight. If they have been so well-done, then why aren't they widespread?

I am probably getting Lenovo IdeaPad U1 which works both as laptop and a tablet. Offers two CPUs, two real OSes (Linux and Windows 7) and can do everything iPad can and so much more (Hulu, Netflix, you name it)

This is not what I expected from Apple.

No front facing camera
No GPS
NO MULTI TASKING!
Home screen makes the product look half finished with the spacing of the icons
Nothing killer about this that my Macbook and iPHone can't do
Buying adpaters for USB is pure FTL and exploiting their customers
NO SD Card slot
No ability to attach an external drive
WTF are people suppose to do with 16GB space with all the videos, apps, music, books, tv shows they want us to buy? How can I back it up if I can't attach an external drive?

I think the next person who wastes a post complaining about multitasking needs to be banned.

The iPad was demoed with OS 3.2 on it. If your iPhone doesn't have multitasking then the iPad won't multitask.

When 4.0 is released and if multitasking isn't allowed then complain then. Until then . . . enough already.

Safari

Anyone notice in the video that when he tapped on the thumbnail of the New Yorker, that it automatically refreshed. Really... Still? Can we PLEASE fix this exceptionally annoying feature of Safari for iPhone OS? Because when you're not on wifi, it's incredibly frustrating.

Perfectly said. This thing is a huge joke.

There are a few upsides, even if you hate the iPad...

That new Apple chip is going to find it's way into the iPhone. And if it allows battery life like that on the iPad, imagine what it'll do with an iPhone, which probably doesn't eat as much power. Plus, it is a 1 Ghz processor. That'll be awesome in an iPhone. And the software will all be built to run on that chip.

This is definitely a device that will probably be amazing in the future after bugs are worked out and more features are added. As it is I'm not very impressed. The major piece missing is a webcam for video chat. I am astonished that it was left out. The use of flash memory is also quite surprising.

Honestly I like most of the things from apple, but right now this is the most overpriced piece of crap.

700 dollars to for a 64gb tablet come on. this is an supersized iphone. no camera (not really important for me), no flash, ethernet (ppl still use ethernet:)) no multitasking. Most importantly, it runs its own OS. I was hoping for a mini macbook that could run some photo video apps (final cut/aperture/photoshop) but it is just some piece of consumer crap. for 300 bucks more u can get a brand new macbook which is like 20x more powerful.

Is it even a phone? I'm looking for some kind of phone functionality in a portable device, but not wanting to get hooked into a contract. This might be it... if the VOIP apps can use the prepaid (when I need it) 3G. Else, it looks like maybe the Touch with a MIFI (pay as you go- if that exists) might be the way to go.

Well I'm certain someone will produce a web cam that connects via 30 pin and uses a downloadable app. (HELLLO Logitech? Still there?)

Solves that issue for the .1% who will use it.
