This thing would have never needed to be invented if the most useful features of the PRO laptop were not removed in the first place.

Now instead of ultra thiness, Ives asethic gets a third party make over making it even thicker than the previous gen.

Nice move.

You talk like this will sell by the bucket load. Millions of MBP users crawling over each other to get to this dock and their precious ports before they sell out.

The reality is, this is a niche of a niche and will sell appropriately!

It shouldnt have to come to this. SD is important, not only for photographers but because SD is a good way to transfer GBs of data from one device to another and also served as a backup/auxiliary storage to the internal SSD which are relatively low capacity.

In previous macbook models, you were able to double your storage space with a 256 GB card for as low as $80. I think that the real motivation from Apple - to force your hand at upgrading pricey SSD drives that cant be upgraded later.

And once you add the price of this thing, even more expensive!

I disagree (obviously). Apple already has the Macbook for those that want thin/light/stripped. I think this product is a great idea that has a lot of potential, especially if it does end up with a battery option.

This thinness obsession has gone overboard IMO.
Its not an opinion, because its not stripped. It has 4 ports than be anything. End of discussion.

Line Dock looks way better than this offering:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/line-dock-thinnest-and-smartest-laptop-power-bank-battery--2#/

And you don't have to screw it in to your computer...
But it's on IndieGogo, and isn't slated for delivery until June 2017, which means most likely it'll ship December 2017 at the earliest.

Actually pretty neat. If only Apple could make a built in version themselves
Oh, they can (just look at the DuoDock) - it's just a matter of would they.

It would be cool if the prototype actually had the ports that OWC is bragging about having...

I really felt something when I first saw this accessory the other day. There's just something about a thick MacBook Pro that gets crap done that makes me miss the old days of Apple when they cared about things like Macs and professional users. Back then they made nice looking machines that were also quite functional. Today the fluff to functional ratio is out of whack because they don't understand their professional users. I'm completely fine with the new MacBook, and was fine with Air, but to dumb down the Pro machines to such an extent shows that they just don't care. I think either one of two things is happening: Apple is killing the Mac off on purpose because they want the future to be all about iOS, or they're biding their time until they can completely overhaul it by kicking Intel to the curb and using Apple designed chips.

Not wishing to sound blinded by my own opinions, but the simple fact that this product exists will be enough for me to now want to buy the new MBP. But it needs every port you could ever want. If it's going to be worthwhile it can't be half-arsed.

Wow. This thing looks ugly. I wonder how much it weighs? I am not all for thinness, but I would sure hate to go back to the tanks that were the 2011 and earlier 15" MacBooks.

.

They only have $170k, which isn't really enough to do the molds, prototyping, testing, a manufacturing run, and shipping/logistics. Sorry, this product will never be delivered.

Even signing the license with the ODM (if there is one) is going to be $25k worth of lawyer time.

A solution to the unnecessary Apple preoccupation with laptop thinness.

So if these things sell like hotcakes and you see them all around then folks who have been saying this will be vindicated. I don't know how many times I have heard "Don't give me thinner, keep it thick and instead give me X with the extra space". The "X" is sometimes a headphone jack, additional ports, more battery -- who knows.

If they sell great, then Apple needs to pay attention and change their design goals to focus on a function a bit more than form.

But if this product fails to get off the ground and gets discontinued then it will be clear that Apple is on the right track making things thinner -- because it will mean that they are playing to majority.

Well, that's your OPINION which you are entitled to. There is and will continue to be plenty of discussion about this machine. It's not over.

You're right. Most people who would buy this are the ones making fun of the 2016 MBP and who will buy a decent laptop to begin with.

Its an interesting solution but I still think its rather ugly. While I do lament the loss of an SD card reader, I'd rather deal with that by way of a USB card reader instead of bolting that onto my MBP.

How is equipping the MacBook Pro with 4 ports with twice the bandwidth of the fastest port of the previous model dumbing it down? Could you hook up a Thunderbolt 3 device to the supposedly "pro" 2015 model?
