Am I wrong in thinking it would be better to put the upgrades in the front facing camera for an iPad Pro that is trying to be closer to a laptop? As someone pointed out above, it is entirely possible people are using the front facing cameras on iPad Pros for meetings.

You definitely not wrong. But to put that technology in the front of iPad Pro models will perhaps hinder the thinness of the bezels.

There’s plenty of comments indicating no one use the back camera of iPad Pro. I for one, use it. I don’t use it often... but there are cases when I don’t have my iPhone in hand. And a quick photo with the iPad is perfectly suitable.

Except for taking some pics of documents, i haven’t used the camera on my 11” ipad pro at all. And I’m a photographer. I would use a 3 camera set up on my ipad mini tho. I guess the 3 camera & the rumored 3D laser on the next ipad pro will be used for virtual reality applications. Which is cool. But won’t entice me to upgrade at this time. The rumored micro LED screen is more tempting.

Imagine the price jump from the current model because of the added cameras.

Give me a version that's cheaper without cameras thank you please.

I wish they'd put a headphone jack socket in the next one.
All manufacturers are making Bluetooth headphones now and they want you to buy them. The headphone jack is now retired on premium mobile computing products. Let it go or vote with your wallet.

Surely we can't have these same comments being posted on every thread and youtube video for another 12 months?!

Or use the USB-C port for headphones. I add a pair of USB-C earbuds to my iPad Pro kit for $15.

If in fact true, my first thought: Ever try typing on a teeter totter? What would compensate the rocking effect.
The obvious solution would be 4 cameras, one on each corner.

I can‘t think of any situation where I would only have my iPad at hand and not my iPhone. ...

Or is the camera upgrade more about AR than anything else?
There might be situations where you'd want a top-notch Apple camera and the larger screen. A (comparatively) low-budget movie could shoot (and edit) on an iPad Pro, and being able to see more than a phone-sized image could be very helpful.

Still, AR seems like a good bet.

"Dummy models like these are often used by case makers to create cases ahead of the launch of new devices, because there can be a lot of money in being one of the first companies to come out with a case for a freshly launched product."

Hahaha. Maybe for phones where there is huge demand to get a case with purchase. And much competition for the $1 case they sell you for $60 or more.

iPad cases? Fewer options, most have special features (rotating pivot points). They can't sell that many. And Logitech work with Apple so they don't need maybe mockups.

I know everyone says the cameras aren't used. They are - but not by Pros. You see grandparents using them. I laughed the first time how awkward it looked as I used a real camera. You wanna guess who had their happy snaps up on Facebook and emailed to friends first? Wasn't me. So just because you don't use something, don't ignore the people who do.

The guy who talked about a Mini with better cameras is on the money. Better size for better cameras. Perhaps next iteration?

Got a question. I do not 100% why there is a need for advanced cameras on an iPad? i like iPad and always had one. Front camera I undestand, but who will carry a 12 inch iPad for photography purposes? I never had a need for a camera on an iPad other than front for video calls
This is speculation on my part but I think if the rumor is true, the upgraded cameras are for film makers. When Apple showed off the capabilities of the iPhone 11 Pro they showed a video shot by professionals using the 11 Pro. The potential of having an even faster A13X chip and a 12.9" viewfinder would make it a nice tool for film students / video journalists. While there are relatively few film makers (compared to non-film makers) I think Apple is wanting to make a true "Pro" iPad that can do everything on one device from shooting video to editing audio and video. I have an original 9.7" iPad Pro from about 3 years ago and I have probably only taken a dozen photos with it in ~ 3 years.

3D scanning and AR is the use case I can see. For example, a designer places virtual furniture in a room. An engineer scans a part to document it. A facility manager scans a room to integrate it with blueprints (BIM)

Regarding the ipad cameras which I almost never use.
I will take them at the about 50$ cost the module costs ... my problem is apple will charge you 100$ for them then I would rather save the money. If i get them for 50 maybe 60bucks yes.. if apple will charge me double then no thanks .

Most of you guys are focusing way too much on the wrong thing, and by "wrong thing" I mean the camera. Yes, it would be a big upgrade in the camera, and it would also be the most visible difference outwardly, but in the end it will be less important than other factors for a lot of people.

Personally I'm waiting for 6 GB RAM and hope for 128 GB base. The upgraded SoC would also be a bonus, although not critical for me. A USB upgrade would be nice too, although I'm not expecting that until late 2020 or early 2021.

BTW, if we do get that new camera, it would also mean a new Apple Smart Keyboard Folio. Fingers crossed for a backlit keyboard, although I'm not expecting that either.

Soo...

Base 6 GB RAM: 90% chance
Upgraded SoC: 90% chance
New camera: 90% chance
Triple lens camera: 75% chance
Base 128 GB storage: 60% chance
USB4: 10% chance
Backlit keyboard: 10% chance

I wish more for an OLED display, sturdier Body, backlit Keyboard with Trackpad, 8GB RAM and optionally booting macOS...

I love the triple-camera array in the current iPhones, but I would love for the iPad Pro to be available with a single, flush camera good enough for document scanning only. An iPad that lays completely flat would be way better for me than one with a bump. (And I'm pro-bump when it comes to phones!)

This is exactly what I'd like to see -- along with a stronger, more durable unit.

As to the camera, I see no value in any camera that resolves larger than an 8-1/2" x 11" piece of paper. I can't imagine that there is a huge market for iPad user folks who want to blow up images larger than that. I would be willing to bet that a survey of iPad users would indicate over 90% of them using the camera primarily for document and whiteboard imaging. The maximum resolution for an 8-1/2" x 11" piece of paper at 240 PPI would be 5.4 megapixels. With a camera that small, the iPad could once again be flush on the back, which would resolve some of the rocker issues when using on a table or desk.

I have a Nikon D850 which has a 45 megapixel sensor capable of imaging MONSTER sized prints. With that, my largest print sizes are generally 11" x 17". We're really getting into overkill with Apple devices -- especially the iPad for what it's generally used for.

God, I hope not. What a waste. How many freakin' filmmakers are there using iPads to even justify the complexity, size, and cost bump of such an addition?

It makes fun commercials for Apple to distribute, I suppose, but except for the tiny, tiny fraction of folks using these things, it would be a costly waste for the rest.

I'm not saying your wrong -- it's certainly Apple's style to do something like this -- but I hope this isn't the case.

That argument makes no sense whatsoever.

Basically, you're using photo print size as an argument against improved digital imaging. Uh what?

The world has long since moved on from photo prints as the sole target of digital imaging. Plus, even if we were going to argue from that odd perspective, your argument makes the common mistakes of assuming camera sensor pixels are real RGB pixels and that everyone’s photos are always perfectly framed so that cropping is never necessary.

Whatever they do, I sure hope the bright spot From the old pro issue doesn’t return.

This is super niche. How many customers like that you will have? 100 globally?

Unfortunately that ship has sailed...

That said, I recently picked up an iPad Mini 5, and was pleasantly surprised to see a headphone jack.

My Air 3 I bought a couple of weeks ago has headphone jack. :)

Haven’t used it once however. :(

Upgraded/triple lens camera...I've had 2 versions of the 12.9 IPP, and don't think I've used the rear camera a single time on either.
I did many time, with scanning apps, and still the older camera was good enough :D

do people type on their iPad while its flat on a table?
