It better have 3 Cameras. I think the iPhone Air's lackluster sales has proven that people don't want to compromise on the camera system and this is targeted towards users who'd otherwise buy a Pro.

Will have 2 rear

No space for 3 based on how they are focusing on battery size

Will they fix the issues with PWM and temporal dithering? If not, I won't be able to get one.

(Of course, this assumes that there even will be an iPhone Fold. Apple might just decide that the demand isn't there.)

They have ordered 22 million panels

They are expecting big demand

Looks annoyingly wide in folded mode, but I have gone from not interested at all to intrigued. The other main brands with their narrow designs that fold out into an enormous square don't do anything for me, but this is at least in the right direction.

The crease/invisible crease is what's going to make or break this for me personally. I'm too OCD to deal with even the slightest dent in the middle of a video display. I'll be impressed if Apple can actually pull off an unfolded display with no visible crease.

Someone certainly would, but the question is if it'll sell the millions of units that justify the R&D investment. The camera's the dealbreaker for me. Sticking with the Pro Max line, despite wanting a fold.
Apple justified the R&D costs for the Vision Pro and that has sold poorly (under 1 million units). On top of that, we even got an updated / 2nd gen Vision Pro.

Apple justified the $10 billion+ in R&D for the Apple (Vapor) Car.

If they release this ios Surface Duo 6 years after the Microsoft Surface Duo I’m going to laugh so hard 😂🤣

Came here to say exactly this! If they actually release this form factor, it is going to fail.

Somewhere between Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung Z Fold 7 is the right dimension.

It looks a bit small and almost stubby notebook toy-like. If I’m paying flagship prices, I expect a genuine display. I really hope Apple releases a proper widescreen model. Check this video which shows how much better video looks when the dimensions are right from 5.20-5.45min

Although thinking about this, aren't iPads 4:3? This means i'm sure Apple will unify the ratios so it all scales so they can port iPadOS fold or whatever it is. Maybe it's a good time for Apple to unify iOS and iPadOS so it scales for both devices.

Side note - Dan’s looking really lean! Good work! especially over the holiday season 💪 He's always got a good vibe with the enthusiasm.

Anyway, here's wishing for widescreen!

This dummy is plastic which isn’t helping it not look like a toy.

It would appear likely if the device is this size it’s because they’ve planned a larger book style one for later. They may even release both sizes together. They probably won’t, but they should perhaps do so.

The reason I don’t see them releasing a tri-fold for some years is the longterm durability of them has yet to be proven. This is important to Apple not just regarding their reputation for quality, but given they would want to charge a lot and would therefore want it to be very good in that area. And they would be right to care about that aspect.

I would only like the version without the foldable screen inside. So, just the outer display please. That seems like a good candidate to replace my good old 13 mini when needed. I'm totally not interested in anything bigger and I am not interested in any foldable. On some Dutch forum (Tweakers), the foldable is already nicknamed the AppleFlap (a very popular Dutch pastry).

The Apple Evangelists will undoubtedly remind you ever so forcefully that it has A REAL FOLDABLE SCREEN

It is funny and tragic, as a Sinofsky/Ballmer/Belfiore/Panay-era fan, that Apple for a decade-plus has been profiting off Microsoft's marketing failure while ripping off their actually innovative homework to pass them off as their own.

This really isn’t for me. Not to say it won’t be a product that finds a robust market, it just isn’t for me.

I would rather a better camera than a larger screen, which looks like is going to be one of the trade offs. So I’ll stick with the PM format.

Cell phones have be come commoditized at this point. It’s increasingly difficult to become excited about a product that does pretty much the same thing as the generation before it, just incrementally better.

The entire foldable phone market is ~1.5%-2.5% of the market, this is a super niche product segment, not sure why Apple is chasing this, it's a drop in the bucket of the mobile phone space. Also they are entering a new segment 6-7 years after the competition, not sure how many potential buyers there are out there for this segment.

Well, Dan, I hope you’re wrong about this design because, in my view, it looks hideous and, as others have pointed out, far too reminiscent of the Microsoft Surface Duo. I suppose it would work fine if you were wearing cargo pants or carrying a bowling bag. 🙄

That’s point they think they can boost the market and therefore boost their profit even more

Apple is ordering 22 million panels so they clearly expect it to put a big dent in the demand and market

They are chasing it as they need to. They need to move tech forward. They need to catch up to the rest of the market in many areas and this will help

Considering the iPone Air is 5.6 mm thin and has a 6.5" and the 17 pro a 6.3" display and the smallest screen iPhone you can currently buy new is the iPhone 16 with a 6.1" screen. Why would Apple ever release a phone with a 5.4" screen in 2026. The unfolded unit you are talking about is only 1.1" bigger than the iPhone Air. It makes no sense as a commercially viable product.
Apple always waits and makes a better product. this is certainly not that.
It’s 4:3 aspect ratio which gives a larger area of screen. And this is the small fold, the bigger fold will come too.

Sold. I really like the smaller form factor — kinda like having both iPhone mini and iPad mini (I really loved that combo when I carried those).

I'd settle for an iPad mini with full telephony. Maybe a 7 inch, so it will fit in more pockets. And no, I don't expect people to walk around with it up to their ears, use air pods or other earbuds. I guess if you wanted you could have a magic keyboard thingy, too.

Without a doubt tri-fold is the way to go.. We get iPad screen sizes in a device which is the size of the phone.. Anything else is a hard pass in my book frankly..... Its what I and most people would honestly like to have in such a device.. An iPad in your pocket..

If it has the same MAIN camera and ultra wide it would be good. Telephoto is great but I think the ultra wide is more important than Zoom.

I went from a Max to an Air and am rather happy with the new ergonomics. So this double phone would be a reversal.

But I'm sure with their slick marketing they spend hundreds of millions on, I will probably find one in my hand at some point.

I've always thought that foldable phones needed to take inspiration from the European paper size standard (A3, A4, etc) where each paper size is double the previous one but maintains the same width to height ratio. If this mockup is accurate, it looks like that's what they've done!
