Considering the iPone Air is 5.6 mm thin and has a 6.5" and the 17 pro a 6.3" display and the smallest screen iPhone you can currently buy new is the iPhone 16 with a 6.1" screen. Why would Apple ever release a phone with a 5.4" screen in 2026. The unfolded unit you are talking about is only 1.1" bigger than the iPhone Air.
You can't compare diagonals that way because the aspect ratio is completely different. In terms of surface area, that 5.4" screen corresponds to a 6" slab iPhone, and the inner screen at 7.7" has 50% more surface area than the Pro Max. The inner screen is similar to one and a half Pro Max screens side by side.

As for why not to make it even bigger, it will already be quite heavy as it is.

My first question when hearing Apple is doing a foldable is "iOS or iPadOS?"
I would rule out iPadOS, because you want the same app to switch seamlessly between the inner and outer screen, but a running app can't be both an iOS and iPad app at the same time. I would expect everything to be just regular iPhone apps. 3:2-ish screen aspect ratios aren't new to iPhone.

If they release this ios Surface Duo 6 years after the Microsoft Surface Duo I’m going to laugh so hard 😂🤣
It will essentially prove Panos Panay has been the best device designer of the last ~15 years.

Which makes Microsoft's hamstringing of Panos (what made him want to leave) and Amazon's current hamstringing of Panos even funnier/sadder. Just let the man cook.

Any foldable is still gonna crease, even Apple’s when they finally release one. Virtually means almost, but not entirely there yet. All the MacRumors excitement about an iPhone Crease. It will likely be a sales flop. 💤

It seems too wide for one handed use while folded, and not having Pro features is really a turn off. I'd rather Apple did a Tri-fold.

There are hundred of apple CAD designs out there. I highly doubt this is gonna be the actual phone.

Are you able to make a phone call by holding it next to your ear? I can't imagine how that would look given it is extra wide to hold. Besides wireless headsets I would like to hold the phone and make a call but not sure how this would be practical given the size.

Tbh it feels bizarre to me. Probably two grand plus for a phone that won’t really fit in most pockets comfortably? I guess I’m not the target market…

If there are no compromises, and the device is at least equal to the then-current Pro Max in terms of all key features, then I might consider buying one.

Otherwise, I already have an iPhone Fold. It's called an iPad Pro and it's essentially an iPhone Fold that's stuck in the open position.

it will completely flop if the starting price is more than $1999. 10x more than the Air.
$1,999 for a 256GB version would be the optimal price, but unfortunately that’s not the price Tim has in mind. Maybe the second generation will get a price decrease similar to the price decrease rumored for the second generation iPhone Air because of poor sales for that model? Of course Tim is optimistic that the folding iPhone won’t have the same fate as the overpriced Air. I’m betting on a price decrease for the second generation just like the Air.

Hopefully they smooth out the hinge corners somehow, they’re the most noticeable un-Appleish part of the device. I can hear sand crunching in the hinge just looking at it (based in a very Apple-loving coastal city.)

Please tell us how well and how comfortably your mockup fits in your pockets (I carry my iPhone in my shirt pocket).

Apple is rumored to be introducing a foldable iPhone in September 2026, and since it will bring the biggest form factor change since the iPhone was introduced in 2007, curiosity about the design is high. A 3D designer created an iPhone Fold design based on rumors, and we printed it out to see how it compares to Apple's current iPhones.

The foldable iPhone is going to be smaller than any current iPhone when it's closed, and it'll be shorter than Samsung's Galaxy foldables. Rumors suggest it'll be somewhere around 5.4 inches, which would make it as small as the now-discontinued iPhone 13 mini.

When open, the iPhone Fold will be somewhere around 7.6 inches. It'll be smaller than the iPad mini, but the display will be larger than any iPhone to date. The iPhone Fold will be short and wide, for a book-like form factor and usage experience with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

We don't know the dimensions of the foldable iPhone yet, and rumors vary somewhat, so the 3D print isn't an exact representation of the device that Apple has in the works. The 3D model was based on a mockup created by MacRumors reader iZac, who based his design on rumors that were circulating in May. He mocked up a 5.49-inch display when the iPhone is closed, and a 7.76-inch display when it's open. There are no sizing rumors that are significantly off from those figures, but we've heard 5.3 to 5.5 inches for the outer (closed) display, and 7.6 to 7.8 inches for the inner (open) display.

iZac's design also uses a 4.8mm thickness for the device when it's unfolded, and rumors about thickness vary too. It could be 4.8mm, or it could be as thin as 4.5mm.

The hinge on the 3D print is just a stand-in, because we don't know what Apple's hinge will look like. Rumors suggest that Apple spent a lot of time and effort creating a hinge that will make the crease between the two halves of the device almost invisible. We also don't know what the camera area will look like.

Even though the 3D print isn't a spot on representation of the device that Apple is planning to launch, it's close enough to the rumors to provide a good idea of how the iPhone Fold will look and feel in the hand.

@Dan Barbera have you been hitting the gym or watching the calories? Looking fitter my dude

I personally wouldn't want this but I guess there's a market for it

Even after this video, I still think that it’s a little too small both in width and length. I’m a little doubtful, but it won’t disregard it until I can physically see it and try it.

Hopefully they make some last minute adjustments and look at lo the comments here and everywhere else.

I would rather like to see a sort of a flip phone, make it short, with a small display, and then it folds to an iPhone max display. If I want an iPad, I have an iPad. I've seen a friend of mine have a foldable phone, think it is a Samsung, it's just so awkward to use it, it's not convenient at all.
This is basically that, on its side. The inner display is almost iPhone max sized.
Or, an iPad mini that folds into a book.

I have 0 interest in a foldable phone. Glad so many people want these, so they'll be less of a demand for the regular iPhones on release day and that means no delayed shipping :)
I just want people to stop holding the phone up to their mouth on speaker phone and hold to their ear like a proper phone. Too many random people yelling into their phones in public.
