Yes we have to use the touch bar, since there are no physical Fn keys.

Many people who don't have decades of muscle memory associated with F keys will never understand our hesitation.

To me the touch bar is a worthless gimmick and harms my productivity.

I see the apple hate wars are still being fought.

Any progress for either side? Apple go bankrupt yet?

They stopped reporting CSAT figures, sales figures, etc., of their products, only reporting profits, so we know where their priorities are...

I'm really considering getting this... it's just the lack of useable ports that really puts me off. Basically you buy this computer, and out of the box, it's unusable as a computer. You can't connect it to anything except the charger. So you have to buy these no-name dodgy Chinese designed USB-C docks that slow down your transfer speeds and may or may not work, and they're quite expensive too. Or you can buy a bunch of dongles from Apple (2 USB dongles, HDMI and SD card slot to get you the port selection of the first Retina MacBook Pro), however, their cables will eventually fray from heavy use as they are poorly built. And that's it, there's no really other way to use this computer.

I feel USB-C is like Thunderbolt 1 and 2: Apple is really pushing it but it's just not catching on. It's been 4 years since the release of the first USB-C MacBook and I've yet to come across anything that plugs into this damned port.

So I kind of feel like the only thing I wish for is to be able to upgrade my GPU, CPU and RAM on my 2013 MBP. That's it. The screen is great, the keyboard is great, the thermals are great, and so are the ports. Having to get a whole new computer just to upgrade 2-3 things is really just planned obsolescence.

Oh and for God's sake stop gluing the battery to the case. Please. Why the hell is this a thing? The battery is a consumable, it will eventually have to be replaced. Having to nearly buy a whole new computer just to replace the battery is ridiculous!
I understand what you say. I´ll keep my Macbook Por 17 late 2011, mate screen, all the ports you can I can desire, Thunderbol to join a dock for eventual uses (Sonnet Echo 15), and an smartcard port where I use USB 3.0 and Esata. Geekbench for than 10.000.

Simply, that 4 USB-C configuration is something I don´t like at all.

And I hate Touch Bar. Seems something from Asus or so.

Currently have a 2019 13" MBP. Will use that one as my portable unit, and the new 16" MBP (i9 / 16GB / 1TB) as my "desktop". A few quick observations on the 16" MBP:

- First thing I noticed is how bulky it is. This machine has a loft of girth and heft. Not something I would want to lug around.
- The screen quality is on-par with my 13" MBP, but more immersive. The immersive nature is very nice.
- Sound is very good, but I mostly use headphones, so not to important for me. The mic is much improved and works well.
- Keyboard is fine. More bounce and better feel. Somewhat of an improvement over my 13" MBP's keyboard, but I'm not quite seeing the "magic" yet.
- Touchpad stays cooler than my 13" MBP's.

So, overall a nice laptop, but at this price seems to be missing a touch screen. I don't mind the ports issue since I don't travel with this beast.

I'm surprised someone hasn't made a physical key strip that overlays the Touch bar and restores the function keys.

Article says 16" display is most notable feature?

I think I understand now. Apple knew it would be a problem to make another 15" macbook. They need a clean break from the butterfly fiasco. So since their machines are known by display dimensions, they needed a new display dimension for the new machine...so it doesn't get lumped in with the faulty machines. This avoids the problem of people having to try to remember which year and season of MBP was good. Now we just say 16", and we immediately know it has the good keyboard.

I guess it makes sense from a marketing perspective. But I was hoping the new display size was a side effect of a more substantive change...

And based on this reasoning, the next 13" MBP will have a screen that is a different size too.

(But the whole "most notable feature" is the keyboard. Obviously. I'm sure even on this forum we can agree the new machine is all about the keyboard.)

I agree. Really, a 4% larger display is not a big deal.

Yeah! Your voice doesn't sound nice! I hope you don't use it again to record another video! I have a 12in MacBook and I do like the keyboard too!

BTW, I prefer MacRumors reviews over those from any other websites!

I visit your page multiple times a day to always be up to date!

Cheers!

I’m just going to wait for the MacBook Air version of this, and hopefully the mythical 15” MacBook Air.

Now that Jony Ive is gone, it seems like sense is coming back to Apple. Hopefully they will put the "Magic keyboard" also on the 13 ", together with the upgraded top row. I'm not holding my breath to get some ports back, but who knows?

Hopefully also the 500-800 USD iPhone line will be upgraded now... I hope for a 6s size phone (slim, light, headphone jack) with 1-2 cameras, finger print sensor, and OLED display.

The 2011 17" is the BEST, most well-thought-out laptop Apple (or anyone) has ever made. A perfect combo of ports, upgradeability, and expandability that STILL remains unmatched to this day (graphics issues aside... there's always a flaw somewhere). And the keyboard is still better than any newer MBP generation.

I'm REALLY sad that mine is dying.

That said, I think that this 16 is as good as it's EVER going to get for MBPs, and if Apple did it right it could become my LAST laptop.

I'm waiting until my 17 really kicks the bucket, though, and for the 16's reliability to be put to the test by all the fanbo...I mean...enthusiastic first-adopters here. ;)

There will never be a touch screen Mac.

Apple's trackpads are so FANTASTIC that I'm okay with that, on Mac laptops.

But a Surface Studio-like iMac 27 would ROCK.

And an iOS-based iBook 2-in-1 would also rock.

The way I wish things were:

-Mac for pros, iOS for consumers (open up iOS even more, though).
-MacBook Pros, Mac Pro, Mac mini: Intel-powered, expandable/upgradeable, macOS machines
-iBook, iPad, iMac: A-powered, sealed, iOS machines
-And of course the current iPhones plus an SE for (small) size queens

weaklings: oh it's sooooooo heavy.
Me: .......puts 2012 15 inch macbook down
Me: puts 2011 17-inch MBP with 2 SSDs (and the bracket to fit it in the optical bay) down.

Haha, I took it into the Apple Store for service once and the tech whined about its weight: "wow, so heavy!"

I'm ashamed to unintentionally have blown raspberries as the laughter escaped my mouth for a moment, a little too loudly for her comfort.

It´s also my favourite mac laptop Ever. Running Catalina now like a charm.

As you can see, I have spares….

I hope the USB-C connectors on this model are better quality than those on the 2016 version. I’ve been plugging in my external monitor most days for 3 years – that’s around 1,000 cycles – and the connection is now quite loose. Occasionally causes problems.

1) Touch Bar is valuable and improves productivity for some; those few who can touch-type the F-keys will not be happy with the Touch Bar though. I’m guessing that might be <1% of users, what’s your estimate? 2) Apple often references customer sat figures in the quarterly conference call. 3) Sales figures are still reported not only for product categories but by region as well. They’re located in the financials. 4) Apple doesn’t disclose the number of units sold anymore, that’s true. There’s no requirement to release units sold, as it’s considered proprietary. No other consumer electronics company discloses units sold either afaik; why should Apple?

From next yr i may need a laptop for my thesis work
so i wanna know if a mac is a good choice for presentations or not
i have never used mac before but tempted to buy one so asking

Ive’s gone?

From the few videos I have seen the clacking of the keys sound just like the previous version. The travel of the keys is longer but it sounds exactly the same. One reviewer was typing on the 16” and it was making a lot of noise and sounded just like my 2017 MBP. It doesn’t sound quiet like the 2015 MBP.

I'm not sure how you would do it ?

The Touch Bar is dynamic and changes based on what you are doing.

those few who can touch-type the F-keys will not be happy with the Touch Bar though.

With the exception of the escape key which is now a physical key, how many people use the function keys on a regular basis ?

Apple has also increased the distance between the Touch Bar and keyboard so accidentally hitting the Touch Bar will be less of a problem.

Ref: The lack of usable ports. Yes this is a problem especially if you want to go all in on USB-C for your connected devices. The issue is that there is no hub that will give you more USB-C ports. They will give you plenty of USB-A ports but the number of USB-C ports on your MacBook Pro (4) is all you can ever get. So if you use one port for charging + 1 port for a USB-C display + 2 ports for USB-C connection to external drives then you are maxed out in USB-C ports. You can get tons of USB-A ports in hubs but you lose the speed advantages of your USB-C port. Supposedly a hub with multiple USB-C ports needs a chip that has not yet been manufactured.
