If this were compatible with my MacMini, it would have been an insta-buy! This is seriously a waste of money in 2018 since you can buy cheaper alternatives. BlackMagic could have at the very least given users options. Buy this one for $599 and a higher end card (Vega) for $799.
I bet it’s an MXM card, but those are hardly ever upgradeable because of compatibility issues.Agree with this. Why not make this user upgradable? What did they do, soder in the GPU?
It does not.
I feel if you considering this eGPU, you should get a PC with user replaceable GPU, not a laptop, for your high end graphics work.I feel like this isn't the best purchase considering you can't replace the card
Apple probably designed be new MBP to have thermal throttling issues on purpose, just so they could sell you one of these too.
Anybody who would buy that thing is a complete idiot.
Seeing a lot of mixed information on this. Can somebody please point to a definitive source on whether or not this thing will drive the built-in display of a new 13" MacBook Pro?
"Unfortunately, the Blackmagic eGPU is not upgradeable, so you're not going to be able to swap out the included graphics card for an upgraded version in the future, which is one of the major downsides to the accessory."
Don't understand how this is a problem. the big bucks are in the video card, aren't they? so you can't upgrade a power supply and a few ports? ummm, I must be missing something
It's clearly stated on the Blackmagic site. Yes.

Thanks for confirming. I see a lot of people in this forum saying things which seem to contradict what you're saying. Guess they don't know what they're talking about.
Because they don't have to. Those who want it will buy it regardless. Their marketing people have already determined that making it upgradable wouldn't entice enough additional people to offset the loss of sales of the next version.Agree with this. Why not make this user upgradable? What did they do, soder in the GPU?
Lets get ifixit to do a teardown analysis.iirc you can, but its limited somewhat
blackmagic says no. nobody took it apart yet.
