I like the app, once you get used to where everything is, you can make some really good quick edits to a day trip.

I REALLY wish they would add landscape 16:9 mode. It'll be like a slimmer version of iMovie, but you can record and edit on the fly with some cool effects, stamps, etc and share in an instant

Apple today released "Clips," a new app that's designed to make it easy to create short videos that can be easily shared via Messages and social networking apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Clips, as the name suggests, lets you combine several video clips, images, and photos with voice-based titles, music, filters, and graphics to create enhanced videos that are up to an hour in length.

Clips isn't hard to use, but the interface does take a bit of time to get used to, so we went hands-on with the app to show MacRumors readers just how it works.

seems like a $ 2 app to me

This app seems to be good for what it likely was intended to be.
I do wish it had the ability to have alternative aspect ratios. I also wish that the it did not open as a default to the narcissistic selfie camera, but rather the external facing camera.

I feel like this is the result of some behind the scenes competition between the app dev teams on who could produce a specific type of app. Whoever won will have their app released.

It's pretty easy to use.

first a book, now this. are they just getting drunk and popping pills and then making the first products that come to mind?
Its called developing apps that will (hopefully) appeal to a larger segment of iPhone users, and not just the 'get off my lawn you kids' segment of users, who act like Apple should only develop apps that they agree with and want to use.

I spent 15 minutes experimenting with it, and my conclusion is, that Apple should NOT have gone public with it ! ... it has the appearance of something that was cobbled-together in a Workshop by some teenager coders, over the span of just 2-3 weeks !

I could NOT find a single feature or capability that impressed me.

Its now April 2017, and Apple is coming out with this ??? ... I recommend they pull it for six months, and try again (with a much better version) when the iPhone 8 is announced.

Extremely disappointed Clips is NOT more than it is !

Live Titles is the ONLY feature that holds promise !, and the current implementation is NOT ready for prime time !!

The rest of the app is nothing special ... there are thousands of much better (photo & video) apps already on the iOS App Store !

The app defaults to Selfie Video ??? ... seriously ???, who is the target audience ??? ... I think this thing needs to be RE-named as "Mom & Dad's Selfie Social Video App" !

Snapchat has their established market segment ... Instagram has their established market segment ... NO way is Clips going to succeed in either ... it doesn't bring anything new to the table, except perhaps Live Titles, and like I said, thats NOT currently ready for Prime Time (maybe six months from now).

Way to go Phil, NOT only is Clips a poor effort at an app against powerhouses like Snap & Insta, but you've now managed to piss-off many in the Photo & Video (category) developer community ! ... is that strike number four ?, or number five ?, I've stopped counting ... and thats just since September 1st, 2016 !

The feature which allows you to press and hold to time the length of clips while adding, alone, is a major breakthrough feature that is missing from other professional video apps.

This app is very well put together. You're off on your own cloud.

Having an issue saving Live Titles w/ no audio. It just saves the video with audio & without the speech to text

Edit: Got it. Found out that I never hit the arrow or Done. Kept trying the down arrow in the upper right hand corner

Spot-on. In fact that's exactly why they chose to make it in the square format. Research has shown (in large numbers) that when people use mobile social media apps, by and large they don't rotate the phone to landscape format even when watching video.

[Waiting for research (in very large numbers) to show that when people overuse social media apps, by and large they don't get enough fresh air, exercise or brilliant ideas even after downloading zillions of new apps].

I'm way over 40 and Clips sounds utilitarian enough for me to give it a shot when I just want to tack a little snark onto a quick clip and ship it to a friend. I like the options at the end besides social media or mail etc, e.g. just saving to camera roll or cloud storage. Not going to condemn it without some experimentation. Thanks to MacRumors for the cool video!

Love it. It's very well done and not as basic as some might think..... I haven't been 12 years old for a very very long time and been having fun with it nevertheless !

Since the app shoots in square format, it doesn't seem like there is a "wrong way up", and, realistically speaking, shooting the way most people hold the device most of the time would be more "right" given that.

Unless your full resolution footage is not saved to Photos then shooting the wrong way permanently retards your videos.

This app seems to record the video the same way no matter how you orient the phone. Nothing different happens one way or another.

Interesting - looks like a custom share sheet they're using with shortcuts to send as message to predefined/favourite contacts. I've been hoping to see something like that in share sheets for a few years now. Hopefully it's a sign that it could be coming in iOS 11.

Nice find - something like this would totally make iMessage Apps more approachable IMO. Let's hope for iOS 11

Ok, at first I thought it was a terrible app but after watching that excellent video I get it. Yep, a quick a dirty way to make videos for free. I can see making educational videos (like the 9 to 5) and other cumulative type vacation videos. Doesn't have video and audio fades and advanced features but it does have the basics.

I agree. So frequently when I go to share something it's to certain contacts. Would be cool if you could have a list of favourite people on that share sheet, and then tapping one gives a short list of methods to send the content to them (mail, message, 3rd party app, etc).

[doublepost=1491906919][/doublepost]Maybe it is a simplified version of iMovie for iPhone. But I rather have them to improve iMove, improve photos to make it more like Aperture, improve on iWorks, etc. It looks like Apple don't have the new iDeas anymore, lagging behind others on innovation and improvement. It is not the hype, awe and praise anymore. Apple please don't simplify away the users that you have. You have taken away many apps and stuff that was good and loved by many, like Aperture and gave us next to useless Photos. What kind of users do Apple want to have? One can soon be in the situation that one can not use apple equipment nor software to create pro-stuff that one can make a living from.... because it only support surfing the net and produce videoclips to be shared with friends when you are on a drinking binge.... Wake up Apple, start to make amazing stuff again, useful stuff we can use to produce useful stuff again...
