Because without the NFC/RFID chip in the wallet to identify itself to the phone, your iPhone has no idea what that MagSafe item you just attached and then removed was - it could have been a wallet, it could have been a powered-down charger, a third-party case or an in-car holder. It needs the hardware in the new wallet to tell the phone "Hey, I'm a wallet and I've just been attached. Make a note of the location when you notice me being removed".

The official Apple MagSafe cases for the iPhone 12 already have this - you can see when you put the phone in the case you get an animation on the screen that matches the colour of the case.
Is that correct that without the NFC/RFID chip the iPhone has no idea what MagSafe item was attached? I don't know about the wallet, but I thought the iPhone knows what particular items are attached (e.g., leather case including color) because all Apple MagSafe items have some kind of way of identifying itself.

It’s just as clever as it sounded at the event, as in not very clever. It just records the last time/place it was attached to your phone. No real intelligence in the wallet at all.

Why, if the quality and durability is more or less the same? Sure there are third party options but maybe I like Apple's offering and think they should provide option for those who try to avoid butchering of animals when possible.
But if you still like it and buy apples offering, you can’t really be that bothered about animals being butchered, right?

This is the kind of Apple product that seems like a profit margin in search of a use.

Forget the NFC chip and the need to create documentation explaining which wallet is compatible with which phone. Just make the magnets stronger. Or take them out completely.

Although it would be useful if it did remember for those other things too, as in where you parked your car or left your charger.

It doesn't have to be made of plastic:

Complete stupidity. I bought a bonded leather couch that was presented by the salesman as “real” leather. It started peeling 3 years in. Horrible plastic product. Never again will buy anything other than real leather or regular fabric.

it’s either real leather or it’s a fabric. Nothing else.

They claim nine billion animals are killed for their skins. 9,000,000,000 animals were skinned? More than the world's population of cows are killed for their skin each year. Mutalated without painkillers! Skinned and cut apart while conscious!

Give me a break.

Well there are many other animals killed for their skins. And with smaller animals more are needed. I think in the case of Dalmatians you need just over 100 animals.

Like others have expressed on the forums, an Airtag in the shape of a credit card would be very welcome.
It's impossible to fit any kind of battery at all into a credit card. If you want an Airtag in card form, it would definitely have to be thicker than one credit card in order to fit some sort of battery into it

How well does the wallet stay connected to the iPhone? I keep my phone in the front pocket on my pants along with a full bi-fold wallet. If I went with this as an alternative when I’m traveling light will it stay attached in my pocket?

What the f is vegan leather? You mean plastic? (Polyurethane) Lmao Vegan leather, anything for marketing I suppose.
Yeah I noticed this term a lot more on the last few years. It used to be called faux leather but I guess the industry opted for a rebrand.

Vegan leather, please. There's so many good options for that now for shoes for example – why not also for the Apple wallet?
Why not real leather? Its more durable and feels better in the hand. It’s not like more animals are killed for the hide. The global meat demand far outstrips leather demand when it comes to number of cattle slaughtered. It’s not like this is made from crocodiles.

Maybe because I don’t wear skin tight jeans.. but I’m so confused about these reviews still talking about the wallet sliding off when taking it out of your pockets. This has never happened to me once since owning one.

Does the phone vibe or alert the moment it is detached?

Then a reminder alert one minute later?

-

It’ll display the phone number on an alternate phone?

That’s interesting.

It's unfortunate that the magnet wasn't at least slightly stronger :( I am legit anticipating some MagSafe improvements as they prep for the potential portliness iPhone
