Honestly, I'm still digging my (relatively) new silver SE.

What's old is new?

I also love my silver SE, for me one of the most beautiful designs Apple has ever created. A really powerful and snappy smartphone which I can use single handed is definitely what I want and need after trying the 5.5 and 4.7 inch iPhones from previous generations. I will only upgrade my SE once Apple releases an iPhone with the same size as the SE but with edge to edge display and more ram.

Just some thoughts, don't go bashing me.

We have 2 x iPhone7 32GB for the kids, an iPhone 6s 64GB for myself and a 128GB 7 Plus for the wife.

We own all of the handsets with the exception of the 7 Plus which is on the Apple upgrade program.

The kids iPhone 7's are grand, not a year old - there is no need or desire to upgrade for at least another 12-24 months.

My wife can upgrade via the program on Nov 1st, but loves her 7 Plus and isn't phased by the new 8 Plus - no need or desire to upgrade for another 12-24 months.

Then there is me....my 6s 64GB is great, its a year old and like new. I just can't justify the change. I toyed with changing to a 7 plus, but feel like I should hold on to my 6s for another year. I got stung by Apple dropping the iPad 2 four months after I bought it and am very wary in case they do something similar with the phones. The 8 is a great handset, but it feels like Apple have been pressurised to market to deliver a new handset which should keep the sales up as an interim to the X which we know will be limited in supply and is being (arguably) rushed to market.

(In my opinion) The 8 / 8Plus in store kind of felt a bit 'meh' or 'samey'. Speakers and true-tone and faster processor are not top of my requirements. What are top is screen quality, storage and battery life. The iPhone 9 will likely have OLED, the 8 didn't and should have (but that would have been to the detriment of an OLED 8 and the X due to supply issues), Apple are very coy with the (meagre) 7 and 8 memory configurations, and battery life should be better.

By the time I add AppleCare (and a new case potentially if I buy a bigger phone) it's costing a small fortune.

I think I'll await the X purely to see and feel it, then go for a 9 or Xs when they will inevitably arrive.

I was all set to go for the X before it was announced, but now I see it as the "compromise" phone.
Apple couldn't get the fingerprint reader to work, so stuck some face recognition tech in there and added a notch to the screen to accommodate the extra cameras required.

At the ridiculous price there's only the screen to make it worth buying, and that is not really important to the usability of the phone anyway - in fact, the iPhone X compromises on general usability as well!

Since the X will sell well, Apple will probably keep that same design in future iPhones, I'm hoping that is not the case to make a future upgrade worthwhile.

The 8 offers all the useful features of the X and is significantly cheaper. Even though it's not a huge upgrade from my 6S at least I know I'm going to be happy with it!

You are correct. Apple X design is the foundation of all incoming new iPhone design, smaller (regular) and bigger (the plus).

IMO, the 8+ is a huge upgrade from my 6s.

Crazy story. I was at the apple store tonigjt and I picked up a demo 8 plus, and it was disconnected from the security cord. For 2 seconds I thought "man I could pocket this thing"

I gave it to a store associate and their eyes were wide with surprise. The guy said this is good karma. I don't believe in karma, but I said hopefully it gets me an X on release date.

I have a 6S, loved the 8, beautiful look and speed. But all I can think about is the oled screen and the dimensions of the X...

Well done. I always think why steal it when I can afford it; it's stupid. I want to live in a world where nobody steals, so I do my part to get there ;)

Main reason I find some countries / societies unattractive. It's not to do with being poor or not, it's all about attitude and beliefs about life. Do you believe you have to grab things from others, or do you believe there's enough for everyone?

I live in northern Thailand and nobody steals things here, even though there are many poor especially by western standards. When I left my iPhone in the noodle shop once, I noticed it an hour later. On the way to the shop I was totally calm and just knew they'd have kept it for me. And they had. Same thing with various other items I left places, or the motorbike key I accidentally left in the ignition many times.

Every decision like the one you made makes the world a better place. Which has much more value than getting a phone for free!

Does it not seem odd that a Watch with a 38mm or 42mm screen has a wider bezel in 2017/2018 than a 6" phone?

Surely they must deal with that in a years time and get more usable/active screen size working.
I guess it's going to depend if Samsung can supply them enough panels to make this a reality.

What statistics, are you looking at?

Last year there was intense interest for the 7 due to all of the free carrier upgrades available. This year the offers are minimal and the costs are higher. This will generate less interest among consumers...especially to those not interested in the X and already have a phone that looks like the 8....the iPhone 6. Totally logical, dude.
It has nothing to do with “logic”. If you were an investor, you would follow these things.

You can also just google “iPhone Super Cycle” but here you go from the Motley Fool: https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/08/08/this-apple-inc-iphone-super-cycle-could-have-stayi.aspx

Apple probably should've waited until next spring to release the X. By that time, they would've had enough OLED displays available from Samsung, maybe TMSC would've had better yields with the A11, maybe Apple could've included TouchID version 3 (integrated into the display) and maybe the production cost of the X would've come down enough to allow Apple to make prices more appealing. I know it's a lot of 'maybes', but a few more months could've made a big difference.

It's the 10th anniversary phone. Releasing it the year after the 10th anniversary would be rather weird.

Really?
Quite a lot of us won't be spending even a dollar this time around. {judging by previous comments here and on other sites}

And quite a lot of us will. I guarantee the X will sell like crazy.

So you convinced yourself of a lie. Good for you cause that contradicts even the massive effort and many purchases necessary to get facial recognition working. It also needed big changes in the soc and the ip for how to use the sensors come from the purchase of many company in the field including the one related to the Kinect. The fact there is a big AR push coming and this is linked to it is obvious.

At most I could believe they pushed back using both (though that too has been contradicted), but using those sensors was always going to happen.

Those phones take years to be developed, nobody’s slapping anything at the last minute on.

I just don't understand why you would buy this phone vs the X. Most people buy iphones to have the best experience. There are some really nice Android phones that can be purchased based on price point. I am waiting for the X.

I agree. The 6s is a great phone. I am waiting for the X.

While I agree the X is the better phone... consider the following -

iPhone 8 256GB + Apple Care = 849 + 129 = 978 + Sales Tax

iPhone X 256GB + Apple Care = 1,149 + 199 = 1,348 + Sales Tax

The iPhone X is an extra $370 not including taxes.

You should use the 8+ pricing as display wise, it's closer to the X.

iPhone 8+ 256GB $949 and $149 AppleCare $1098
iPhone X 256GB $1149 and $199 AppleCare $1348

Iphone X is $250 more.

My concern is what will need correcting with this new device, as I'm sure there will be a few issues. The 8 is solid and mature design. I'm considering an 8 and waiting for Gen 2 or 3 of the "new" iPhone to replace my 6 Plus which seems really slow after iOS 11.

My 4S does EVERYTHING I need. Not excited about any iPhone since...just tweaks. Guess they pretty much perfected it out of the gate. Not a bad thing but it does make it harder for "followup acts" to get any "wow" factor.

Literally just got back from picking up my 8 Plus. I wasn’t going to bother, instead holding out for the X2 as it would be. Instead though. I dunno. My 6 was fine with ios11 but. Well I dunno. It makes me happy seeing Tim Cook and Apple stand for progressive ideas so I just jumped right on in.

I went for the 64gb model because I use iCloud storage and Apple Music… so now all my photos and music are off my device I’m only using 22gb of space on my well-used 6.

It’s really good. I dunno about this Plus model though. I have big hands and this is a stretch for me. Might take it back for the smaller one. Dunno what the appeal is for such big phones but there you go! Maybe some people watch tv shows and films on them in their homes? Who knows. I mean it’s nice. Music sounds nice. It’s just uncomfortable for my piano playing hands.

But yeah. Cannot for the life of me get over that weird notch on the X. Absolutely ruins it. Ugly and dreadful.

Hmm. See, it’s a shame you can’t upgrade to the new iOS because it really is amazing, and I’ve never thought that about an iOS update before. It’s very user friendly.

I had a 4S before my last phone, the 6. Really was a gorgeous device. So glad they’ve gone back to the glass back panel - it’s so grippy!

But yeah. Photos app, better battery stuff, Apple Watch support, Apple Music support, camera improvements and especially slow motion support. That’s why I upgraded from my 4S.

Well here is one less competition for getting the IPhone ten :D -

That video is gold!

A real "pro" user scenario with Cook's Apple. Worst part is, brainwashed consumers, many of us captured in great part by SJ's roadmap, which at the end of the day delivered quality products, keep buying any glued half baked crap they put out. To most's eyes Apple is doing great just because they are selling more crap than ever? Apple lost it's soul, remind me again how many companies turned into the richest one by selling quality products? He didn't even mention aperture or disk utility, let alone hardware downgrades like smaller batteries, slower CPUs like with the MB, non-upgradable "pro" machines, ports, magsafe removal, subpar GPU, glowing logo removal, dongle-city devices, a god damn fingering screen!?

As someone that didn’t want a new iPhone at all until I held an 8+ last night, I understand why someone would want an 8 over an X. Personally I hate that notch so there’s no way I could get one of those phones. And, as I see it, the 8 line is likely the last in this design. I rather like getting something that’s matured like this. Same with my older iPhones, I went for the S updated model rather than the basic… and really the 8 is just the 7S, or the 6SSS.

So that’s why I bought the 8. I’d rather get a refined final model of something than a brand new one that will likely have problems. And that’s fine! I’m not an internet weirdo that prejudges people based on what phone they want! It’s strange to do so, IMO. Stability is something I’ve really been attracted to when it comes to buying new products.

I'm with you. Last year someone came into our backyard got into our shed and stole my son's new BMX. He was devastated and so was I. Why do that to other people? Can you be that selfish? Just leave other people be, and be thankful for what you have.

The price point is just too much for me. I'll wait until apple recoup their R&D costs on the Xs or whatever the heck they will call it.
